The measurements of $X_mathrm{max}$ \u0000are performed for $E > 10^{17.2}$ eV using observations of the \u0000longitudinal development of air showers by the fluorescence \u0000telescopes. The evolution of the mean and the fluctuations of $X_mathrm{max}$ \u0000with energy, as extracted from the data taken during $2004-2017$, is \u0000interpreted in terms of the evolution of the mean logarithmic mass \u0000and the spread of the masses in the primary beam using post-LHC \u0000hadronic interaction models. \u0000 \u0000The measurements of the correlation between $X_mathrm{max}$ and the signal in \u0000the surface stations allow one to obtain constraints on the spread \u0000of the masses in the primary beam. These constraints are weakly \u0000sensitive to the experimental systematic errors and to the \u0000uncertainties in the modelling of air showers. Previously, using \u0000data taken during $2004-2012$, we excluded with a significance of \u0000$5sigma$ pure compositions and compositions consisting of only \u0000protons and helium for energies $10^{18.5}-10^{19.0}$ eV. In the \u0000update of the analysis presented here using the data from years \u0000$2004-2017$ and nearly doubled statistics, these conclusions are \u0000confirmed with a significance $>6.4sigma$ in the energy range \u0000$10^{18.5}-10^{18.7}$ eV alone, while for higher energies the \u0000correlation in data becomes consistent with less mixed \u0000compositions.

Atmospheric $^{14}$C becomes trapped in air bubbles in polar ice as compacted snow (firn) transforms into ice. $^{14}$C is also produced in situ in ice grains by penetrating cosmic-ray neutrons and muons. Recent ice core measurements indicate that in the $^{14}$CO phase, the $^{14}$C is dominated by the in situ cosmogenic component at most ice coring sites. Thus, it should be possible to use ice-bound $^{14}$CO to reconstruct the historical flux of cosmic rays at Earth, without the transport and deposition uncertainties associated with $^{10}$Be or the carbon cycle uncertainties affecting atmospheric $^{14}$CO$_2$. The measurements will be sensitive to the cosmic-ray flux above the energy range most affected by solar modulation. We present estimates of the expected sensitivity of $^{14}$CO in ice cores to the historical flux of Galactic cosmic rays, based on recent studies of $^{14}$CO in polar ice.

The ULEIS and SIS instruments on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) have been measuring the occurrence of SEP 3He in the interplanetary medium near Earth over nearly two full solar cycles. The 3He isotope has been observed nearly 90% of the time at solar maximum, but no more than a few % of the time at solar minimum. NASA’s Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft was launched in August 2018 on a mission designed to include 24 close flybys of the Sun over seven years. PSP’s scientific objectives include the study of the acceleration and transport of 3He-rich SEPs, and the spacecraft carries a two-instrument suite, ISOIS, that has the capability to perform these studies. The first two orbits of PSP occurred under extremely quiet solar-minimum conditions, which will provide an opportunity to search for small 3He-rich SEP events in the previously unexplored region <0.2 AU from the Sun under conditions with extremely low energetic-particle backgrounds. We present an update of the long-term record of SEP 3He occurrence near 1 AU and, with this context, discuss some advances that can be expected from PSP.

Schroder
The upgrade of IceTop, the surface array of IceCube, by a hybrid array of scintillation and radio detectors is motivated by a rich science case. The scintillators will lower the threshold for the measurement of air showers to about 100 TeV, provide a more efficient veto of air showers for neutrino measurements, and improve the separation of the electromagnetic and muonic shower components due to the different responses of scintillators and ice-Cherenkov tanks. Furthermore, the scintillators will enable the calibration and compensation of the effect of snow accumulation above IceTop. The radio antennas will provide a calorimetric measurement of the electromagnetic shower component and a direct sensitivity to the shower maximum. Consequently, the combination of the existing ice-Cherenkov detectors in the ice and at the surface with the new scintillation and radio detectors at the surface will enable unprecedented accuracy for event-by-event mass classification in the PeV to EeV range. This will transform IceCube into the most accurate instrument for high-energy Galactic cosmic rays in the Southern Hemisphere. Hence, the hybrid array will make an important contribution to the main science case of IceCube of understanding the origin of cosmic rays. In addition to its cosmic-ray science goals, the hybrid array provides essential RD for IceCube-Gen2 which will feature a larger surface array, sophisticated timing and communication technology, and elevated surface structures. Moreover, the hybrid array will improve the understanding of the atmospheric background to the neutrino measurements suffering from uncertainties in the absolute flux and the mass composition, and from deficiencies of hadronic interaction models. Finally, the hybrid array opens new scientific opportunities, such as the searches for PeV gamma rays from the Galactic Center and for mass-dependent anisotropies, which both may lead to the discovery of the most energetic sources in the Milky Way.

The objective of the JEM-EUSO program is the realization of a space mission devoted to UHECR physics. Several detectors have been developed in this framework or are under development. EUSO–TA, installed at the Telescope Array site in Utah in 2013, is in operation. It has detected 9 UHECRs in coincidence with Telescope Array fluorescence detector at Black Rock Mesa. EUSO–Balloon flew on board a stratospheric balloon in August 2014. It measured the UV intensity on forests, lakes and cities as well as proved the observation of UHECR–like events reproduced by laser tracks. EUSO–SPB1 was launched on board a super pressure balloon on April 24th 2017 and flew for 12 days. It proved the functionality of all the subsystems of the telescope on a long term and observed the UV emission on oceans. TUS, on board the Lomonosov satellite, in orbit since April 28th 2016, is now included in the JEM–EUSO program and has detected so far in the UHECR trigger-mode a few interesting signals. Mini–EUSO is in its final phase of integration in Russia, and is scheduled for launch on August 22 nd. The main results obtained so far by these missions are summarized and put in the perspective offuture space detectors such as K–EUSO and POEMMA.

One such event observed on 1 December 2014 was analysed and its electrical properties of thundercloud were derived using muon imaging. This recent result showed production of Giga-Volt potential in thunderclouds, possibly responsible for production of 100 MeV $gamma$-rays in terrestrial $gamma$-ray flashes. However, these properties derived from simulations rely on choice of low and high energy hadronic interaction models used in CORSIKA. So, the derived properties are model dependent which makes this study very important. The comparison of various combinations using low and high energy hadronic models and its impact on electric potential estimation will be discussed in this work.

The force-field approximation is a popular way of dealing with solar modulation, especially for studies focused on galactic transport of cosmic rays. The validity of this approach to reproduce the modulated GCR fluxes at Earth is tested using monthly proton fluxes measured by PAMELA between July 2006 and January 2014 and monthly proton and helium fluxes measured by AMS-02 between May 2011 and May 2017.
