Transient astrophysical objects, such as fast radio bursts (FRBs), could explain a large percentage of the measured flux. We present the analysis techniques of IceCube searches for MeV to TeV neutrinos from FRBs. As no significant correlation between IceCube neutrinos and FRBs has been found, we present the first limit on MeV neutrino emission from FRBs and the most constraining limits for neutrinos with GeV to TeV energies. We also describe the prospects for future IceCube neutrino searches coinciding with FRB detections from next generation radio interferometers.

A multimessenger campaign triggered by the coincident observation of a gamma-ray flare and a 290-TeV IceCube neutrino pinpointed the cosmic-ray accelerator TXS 0506+056. Subsequently, the IceCube archival data revealed a 3-month burst of 13 cosmic neutrinos in 2014-15 that dominates the neutrino flux of the source over the 9.5 years of observations. The original identification of the source as a blazar was puzzling because it requires a major accretion event onto the rotating supermassive black hole to accommodate the neutrino burst. Subsequent high-resolution radio images of the source with the VLBA brought to light a merger of two galaxies, revealed by the interaction of two jets entangled in the source. Recently, the blazar PKS 1502+106 was found in the direction of a 300-TeV neutrino alert, IC-190730. OVRA radio observations at 15 GHz indicate that the neutrino also coincides with the highest flux density of a flare that started five years ago. This matches the similar long-term outburst seen from TXS 0506+056 and may indicate merger activity. Also, the dominant hotspot in the 10-year IceCube neutrino sky map, NGC 1068 (Messier 77), is a Seyfert galaxy undergoing a major accretion event onto the black hole. A few-percent fraction of such special sources, now labeled as gamma-ray blazars, is sufficient to accommodate the diffuse cosmic neutrino flux observed by IceCube. While rapid progress seems likely, the observations also convincingly make the case for the construction of more and larger neutrino telescopes with better angular resolution.

While the neutrino observed in September 2017 has to describe contemporary data in e.g. the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray ranges, data at the 2014-15 excess are much sparser. We demonstrate that in both cases the simplest possible one-zone AGN blazar models face challenges. While the 2017 flare can be well interpreted by considering more sophisticated source geometries, the 2014-15 flare is much harder to describe with conventional models. One challenge is the energy injected into the electromagnetic cascade coming together with the neutrino production, which cannot be reconciled with the 13 observed neutrino events. We also speculate if a common interpretation of both flares is feasible.

The dominant event yield in the deep ice detector consists of penetrating atmospheric muons produced in cosmic ray air showers with energies above several 100 GeV. In addition, the surface array, IceTop, deployed above the IceCube deep ice detector, measures the electromagnetic signal and low-energy muons of the air shower. Hence, IceCube and IceTop yield unique opportunities to study cosmic rays with large statistics in great detail. \u0000 \u0000We discuss the latest results of air shower measurements from IceCube and IceTop, including the energy spectrum of cosmic rays from 250 TeV up to the EeV range. We will also report a measurement of the cosmic ray mass composition in the PeV to EeV range and show recent results from searches for PeV gamma ray sources in the Southern Hemisphere. In addition, results from a full-sky analysis of the cosmic ray anisotropy, using combined data from the IceCube and HAWC observatories, will be reported. Finally, we will present a measurement of the density of muons in the GeV range and discuss its consistency with predictions from hadronic interaction models.

So far, Auger has detected a large-scale anisotropy consistent with a ∼ 6.5% dipole moment in the distribution of cosmic rays with E > 8 EeV, and both collaborations have reported indications for smaller-scale anisotropies at higher energies. On the other hand, neither array has full-sky coverage, the Auger field of view being limited to declinations δ −16° . Searches for anisotropies with full-sky coverage thus require combining data from both arrays. A working group with members from both collaborations has been established for this task. Since even a minor systematic error in the energy determinations at either of the arrays could result in a sizeable spurious anisotropy along the north–south axis, we devised a method to cross-calibrate the energy scales of the two experiments with respect to each other by using events in a declination band within the intersection of their fields of view. In this contribution, we report on both updates on blind searches for anisotropies and the first full-sky studies of flux models based on possible local extragalactic sources.

It has recently been shown that this kind of instrumentation can provide a resolution of the energy and of the shower maximum on the level of other cosmic-ray detection methods. Due to the dominant geomagnetic nature of the air-shower radio emission in the traditional frequency band of 30 to 80 MHz, the amplitude and polarization of the radio signal strongly depend on the azimuth and zenith angle of the arrival direction. Thus, the estimation of the efficiency and subsequently of the aperture of an antenna array is more complex than for particle or Cherenkov-light detectors. We have built a new efficiency model based on utilizing a lateral distribution function as a shower model, and a probabilistic treatment of the detection process. The model is compared to the data measured by the Tunka Radio Extension (Tunka-Rex), a digital antenna array with an area of about 1 km$^2$ located in Siberia at the Tunka Advanced Instrument for Cosmic rays and Gamma Ray Astronomy (TAIGA). Tunka-Rex detects radio emission of air showers using trigger from air-Cherenkov and particle detectors. The present study is an essential step towards the measurement of the cosmic-ray flux with Tunka-Rex, and is important for radio measurements of air showers in general.

The standard emission model of PWNe predicts that such high energy particles lose their energy immediately by radiative cooling and that the emission region of X-rays is smaller than those of lower frequencies. However, as 3C 58 and G21.5-0.9, some PWNe have been discovered in which the emission region of X-rays and radio extend to the almost same extent, and it has been pointed out that the conventional model has room for reconsideration. \u0000We investigate the validity of the model by simultaneously calculating the emission spectrum integrating over the entire nebula and the radial profile of the X-ray surface brightness. Our detailed analysis reveals that the conventional model cannot explain observational facts of 3C 58 and G21.5-0.9. Furthermore, in order to improve the model, we construct a model of PWNe in consideration of spatial diffusion due to a disturbed magnetic field. We show that entire spectra and X-ray surface brightness profiles are reproduced simultaneously by our new model. The model implies the existence of a large gamma-ray halo which consists of particles diffusely escaped out of the nebula. The halo could spread to a degree that it can be resolved spatially by the Cherenkov Telescope Array.

In contrast, a certain amount of these nuclides is also produced by solar energetic particles (SEPs) derived from sporadic solar events such as solar flares and CMEs. Cosmic ray increase events in AD 774/775, AD 993/994 (or 992/993), and ~BC 660 have been discovered so far using 14C data in tree rings (Miyake et al. 2012, 2013, Park et al. 2017). It is considered that the most plausible cause of these events is an extreme SEP event whose energy spectrum is very hard based on 14C analyses of tree rings and 10Be and 36Cl analyses of ice cores (e.g. Mekhaldi et al. 2015, Miyake et al. 2015, 2019, Buntgen et al. 2018, O'Hare et al. 2019). These SEP events are estimated to be several dozen times larger than the largest events found in direct observation, which might have a serious impact on modern society. Therefore, it is important to investigate an occurrence rate of past extreme events. In recent years, surveys of past SEP events are actively conducted by cosmogenic nuclides measurements with high time resolution (~1-year resolution). Here, the detected past SEP candidates and a further survey of similar events are reviewed. This manuscript will be updated by 31 August.

With the design of the ultra-high energy cosmic ray fluorescence detectors belonging to the JEM-EUSO program, it will make the first UV map of the Earth by observing atmospheric phenomena such as transient luminous events, sprites and lightning, as well as meteors and bioluminescence from earth. Diffused light from laser shots from the ground, which mimic the fluorescence light emitted by Nitrogen molecules when extensive air showers pass through the atmosphere, can be used to verify the capability of this kind of detector to observe ultra-high energy cosmic rays. To validate the electronics and the trigger algorithms developed for Mini-EUSO, a scaled down version of the telescope with 1:9 of the original focal surface and a lens of 2.5 cm diameter has been built. Tests of the Mini-EUSO engineering model have been made in laboratory and in open sky condition.
