These fluorescence light is attenuated and lost by aerosols in the atmosphere through the path of propagation to the FD. Calibration of atmospheric attenuation is necessary to estimate the energy of cosmic ray. The Central Laser Facility (CLF) consists of a laser that fires a 355 nm burst vertically with 10 Hz, every half-hour. The Vertical Aerosol Optical Depth(VAOD) which is atmospheric transparency can be measured every 30 minutes by the CLF. Therefore, we can monitor the change of the atmosphere every 30 minutes within the FD observation time. The CLF is located at the center of three FD stations and observes the atmospheric transparency of the TA site. We report the results of atmospheric transparency at the TA site.

HET also includes a ‘neutral-particle’ coincidence mode designed to assess the fraction of electron-like events due to g -rays that Compton scatter or pair- produce in the telescope. Based on g -ray observations by SMM, RHESSI and Fermi, along with laboratory calibrations with radioactive g -ray sources, we believe HET is capable of detecting solar g -ray flares, especially when PSP is close to the Sun. This paper illustrates how HET detects solar g -rays and presents “quiet-time background” g -ray spectra (due mainly to g -rays produced by cosmic-ray interactions in surrounding spacecraft material). The estimated g -ray yield from the October 28, 2003 events is used as an example of the HET sensitivity.

In our modeling, we assume that the blazar emission originates from a plasma blob located in the jet, and that relativistic electrons are injected into the blob and may undergo stochastic (Fermi II) or shock (Fermi I) acceleration. We numerically solve the kinetic equation for electron evolution in the blob, taking into account particle injection, escape, acceleration and radiative cooling. In order to calculate the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the blob emission we assume a synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario, including also synchrotron self absorption and gamma-gamma absorption processes. Our code computes the evolution of the electron spectrum and of the associated broad-band SED. \u0000As a first application, we attempt to connect the continuous, steady-state emission from the blazar Mrk 421 with a flare observed in February 2010, using a minimal number of free parameters in a two-zone scenario in which a turbulent region is present around the emitting zone. Mrk 421 is a high-synchrotron-peaked (HSP) BL Lac, and one of the brightest extragalactic γ-ray sources in the Very High Energy (VHE) γ-ray band. It is also the closest TeV emitting blazar to the Earth (redshift z=0.031).

The data accumulation was fully completed and all experimental components were dismantled, though the analysis of the high-quality data is still continued. E.g., we investigated the validity of the hadronic interaction model of the new SIBYLL version 2.3c. We also published a new result of a search for large-scale anisotropies performed with the KASCADE-Grande data. Investigation of the attenuation length of the muon in the atmosphere is also updated with the predictions of the SIBYLL 2.3 interaction model. We investigated, in addition, the muon content of high-energy air showers and compared them to all post-LHC interaction models. In this contribution, the new and updated results from KASCADE-Grande will be presented. An update of the web-based data center KCDC offering the original scientific data from KASCADE-Grande to the public will be briefly discussed as well.

This calorimeter aims to measure photons with energies from ~100 keV to 20-50 MeV. The expected energy resolution at 662 keV is better than 1% FWHM, and the photon interaction position-measurement accuracy is better than 1 mm in all dimensions. The 3D virtual voxel approach solves a long-standing problem with CdZnTe detectors stemming from material imperfections that limit the performance and usefulness of larger detectors. This concept enables relaxed requirements on the quality of crystals, while maintaining the same energy resolution, significantly reducing cost. A modular calorimeter design, consisting of rectangular prisms arranged in a grid, supports the assembly of large arrays. Such a detector can be used in gamma-ray telescopes that use Compton scattering, such as AMEGO, serving as a calorimeter and providing the position and energy measurement for scattered photons. The achievable energy resolution is suitable for spectroscopic measurements of gamma-ray lines from nuclear decays. In a combination with a coded aperture mask, the detector could also provide high angular resolution detection of gamma radiation.

For this reason, the satellite is equipped with several instruments to monitor various physical parameters including the Earth's electric and magnetic field, ionospheric plasma principal parameters (i.e. density, temperature, and ions composition) and high energy particle flux fluctuations. \u0000The High Energy Particle Detector (HEPD), built by the Italian CSES-Limadou collaboration, is designed to detect mostly electrons in the energy range between 3 MeV and 100 MeV and protons in the energy range between 30 MeV and 300 MeV. The detector is composed of a tracking system, a segmented layer of plastic scintillator (used for the trigger), a range calorimeter and a veto system. \u0000 \u0000After CSES-01 launch (February 2, 2018), the apparatus underwent the commissioning phase where its configuration was adjusted in order to guarantee optimal operational conditions in the space environment. Now the satellite is in stable data-taking mode. \u0000 \u0000In this work a description of the HEPD detector will be reported, focusing on the results of the electron and proton test beam calibrations. In addition, a particular relevance will be given to the presentation of the HEPD in-flight performance, such as its good capability in particle identification. The high statistic collected by HEPD, thanks to its large acceptance window, makes it perfectly suitable for the investigation of fluctuations in the charged particle fluxes.
This rapport summarizes the cosmic-ray indirect (CRI) session of the 36th ICRC conference. Updated measurements from several air-shower arrays with higher precision were shown leading to the discovery of new features in the energy spectrum: HAWC measures a softening of the light component (p+He) around $10^{13.5},$eV; measurements of the Pierre Auger Observatory show that the second knee is a smooth feature extending at least over the range of $100-200,$PeV and that the energy spectrum between the ankle and the cut-off cannot be described by a simple broken power law. Measurements of the mass composition confirm that the composition is a varying mixture of protons and nuclei at least up to several $10,$EeV. Hadronic interaction models constitute a significant uncertainty in the interpretation of measurements, but a joint effort of several collaborations helps to better assess their deficiencies, e.g., by quantifying the muon deficit in the models over the shower energy. Still, general trends in the average mass composition over energy are consistent for all state-of-the-art models. Anisotropy measurements with higher precision generally confirm earlier results, too. A change of the amplitude and phase of the equatorial dipole provides another indication that in the energy range between the second knee and the ankle there likely is a transition from Galactic to extragalactic sources. However, neither the most energetic Galatic nor the extragalactic sources have been discovered, yet, which remains a primary science goal of the field. Next to more exposure, an increase of measurement accuracy and decrease of systematic uncertainties will provide future progress. Therefore, it is particularly exciting that new experiments are built and existing experiments upgraded to increase the accuracy for the measurement of the energy and mass composition, e.g., by combining radio antennas with particle detectors. Last but not least, there is a trend that experiments are designed such that they can target cosmic rays, photons, and neutrinos at the same time, which will facilitate multi-messenger astrophysics at the highest energies.
