The Electronic Guidebook, whose aims are to understand how the introduction of wireless technologies changes and augments user experiences at the Exploratorium, an interactive science museum. The main questions being addressed in this study are: How do users respond to a mobile web resource designed to improve and transform user experiences in a hands-on museum? This paper shares results from interviews with three categories of users: teachers, staff 'explainers', and visitors. Several recurring issues and themes emerged from our analyses such as users' sense of isolation and user attempts to make a seamless experience between real-place and virtual contexts. Teachers, in particular, felt the mobile web content would be more useful as learning activities before and after museum visits. While the majority of users expressed a concern that the handheld would interfere with exhibit play, these users also reported positive feedback about the mobile web content and demonstrated new ways in which this resource motivated new ways to think and play with exhibits. Additional insights are provided regarding the role of mobile web content in mediating user interactions including a framework under development for organizing interactions with handhelds.","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The purpose of this project is to develop advanced wireless technologies for building an ad hoc classroom in order to contrive a modern and new learning environment. A wireless platform is developed for teacher and students to establish a classroom dynamically irrespective of location and time bounds. As supported in a traditional classroom, we develop information technology to provide the teacher with teaching aids, such as blackboard, board rubber, colored chalk, microphone, voice recorder, video recorder, and so on, for course teaching and discussions in an ad hoc classroom. In addition, we provide students with an electronic schoolbag (or eSchoolbag) which packs electronic book, notebook, parents contact book, pencil case, writing materials, sheets, calculator, address book, and so on. Taking lessons in a lively, vivid, and new learning environment, students are expected to enhance their learning performance without any burden like attending classes physically. Moreover students get more flexible scope of learning at a convenient time.","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. KNOWMOBILE is a research collaboration comprising academic and industrial partners including InterMedia, the Department of Informatics and the School of Medicine at University of Oslo, CUT at the University of Umea, Telenor R&D, Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, and MedCal. The KNOWMOBILE project aims to support problem-based learning (PBL) and the integration of evidence based medicine (EBM) in the medical education reform in Norway. What does 'just-in-time' access to information mean in clinical settings? How can health professionals be helped with access to the most up-to-date medical information? From preliminary analyses of the problematics of PDAs in use-and nonuse-we discuss problems regarding information and communication infrastructure that call upon us to work from a social historical interpretation of 'infrastructures' in order to better inform design perspectives and directions for future research. We conclude that the PDAs should not be regarded as personal digital assistants, but rather as gateways in complicated webs of interdependent technical and social networks.","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Studies of adult learning practice showed that learning activity is mobile between locations, time slots, and topic areas. Moreover, learning follows a hierarchical organisation at three operational levels: learning activities are discrete acts, which are grouped to form learning episodes, which in turn are grouped to form learning projects. KLeOS reflects this hierarchical structure and allows the user to organise and manage their learning experiences and resources as a visual timeline. In addition, it incorporates a knowledge map, which is updated as the user progresses through learning experiences. The interface of the organiser is based on the idea of timelines and employs project lines and activity lines to represent the user's learning over a lifetime. The organiser forms a bridge between the timeline and the knowledge map by tagging the nodes of knowledge with the context of the learning episode(s) within which that knowledge was acquired. The architecture of KLeOS allows it to be used on a number of different platforms, thus ensuring mobility.","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. This memory is a computer-based space where a learner can organize and manage the annotations he adds to his training documents. Following a literature review and after our first experiments, we set the specifications of the basic concepts: didactic annotations and e-books. This review enlightened the fact that the crucial issue is to solve the paradox that people use personal annotation visual forms whereas they have the same annotating objectives within their community. Our proposition is to provide learners with annotation patterns combining personal annotation visual forms and sharable annotation content. This annotation pattern model is based on ontologies structuring annotations content, particularly the didactic objectives. We are currently implementing these models on e-books on which usability and learning efficiency could more easily be obtained because of their properties (bare-handed interaction and mobility).","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Regardless of age or environment, our experience has shown that the primary, and most powerful uses of handheld computers have not been for organizational purposes. While students do take advantage of the organizational abilities, handhelds are most often used as tools to aid in research, alternatives to paper-based tasks, group collaboration activities, and much more. In addition to describing student tasks, this paper provides a context as to how much time handheld computers are being used in each classroom. This framework of time use and task use provides a better understanding of what a classroom with handheld computers might look like.","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The article defines the word mobility from the educational point of view. The main perspective in this article is in teacher training. We present experiences of how mobile technology was used in teacher training, how trainees and supervising teachers felt the use of mobile technology. The pilot was carried out on Department of Home Economics and Craft Science in the University of Helsinki. The idea of the pilot was that the supervising teacher and trainee students discuss and share their ideas about teaching methods etc. through mobile devices and also use SMS-messaging and digital pictures as a part of supervising process. The use of digital pictures which were delivered via a mobile device came up to be surprisingly successful. The goal of these innovative pilot projects is to create flexible teaching solutions, which will enable the accessing of information with all kinds of devices, and to support learning in a variety of situations.","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The author draws from four years of observations of classes using two early network prototypes. Two areas of impact for students are anonymity of data submission to the group and the ability to see their data displayed in the group space. For teachers, the two areas are the ability to instantly assess how all students are doing at any time during a lesson and the case with which the system shares data. Finally, two implications are highlighted. The networks' ability to facilitate exploratory data activities may make these types of activities more accessible to all teachers, and the ability of the network to let all students answer all questions may have an impact upon student engagement in the classroom.","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Yet, researchers in this field must recognize the importance of complementing these technical advances with improved understanding of the patterns of classroom activity that most need support. Our approach is to create conceptual tools that help us think and talk about technology-supported collaborative learning. A particularly powerful tool, we have found, is collaborative design patterns, which capture common learning situations and tradeoffs in written form.","PeriodicalId":165746,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
