In this paper, the author compares various competing explanations for clergy sexual misconduct from the vantage point of personality theory; suggests interventions appropriate to clergy that are consistent with these theories, with specific reference to rabbis; compares current efforts made by Jewish and Catholic ordaining institutions to discuss issues of sexual misconduct with their students prior to ordination; and draws policy inferences as they relate to the organizational structures within the religious community.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124056838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our earlier research explored historical attitudes toward violence against women in medieval Latin saints' lives, demonstrating how an analysis of violence against women in historical narratives enlightens our understanding in the present.1 The study proposed here continues this work, expanding the sources to include other hagiographical texts, medieval inquisition registers, modern narratives, and current interviews with survivors of domestic abuse.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122549737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Trauma, abuse, and healing in the roman catholic community","authors":"Lynn Bridgers","doi":"10.1300/J154V07N01_03","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1300/J154V07N01_03","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT This inquiry undertakes a semiotic analysis combined with traumatic studies, and brings it to bear on communication between survivors of abuse and the Roman Catholic community and hierarchy. Incorporating new information from traumatic studies, it applies semiotic analysis to ecclesiology, noting how different models of church impact communications between survivors and the Church. Subsequently, the inquiry explores the ethical imperative behind the need for communication as found in Josiah Royce's Will to Interpret. It suggests both Church and survivors might create new avenues of communication and sustain healing through use of support groups and the Pauline promise of the Resurrection.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129728336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the studies of the shelters between 30% to as much as 60% of the women who leave their violent partners return to them within the first six months. The Ayelet project has had a 100% success rate. All the women who have participated in the project have succeeded to rehabilitate their lives and live outside the cycle of violence. Furthermore, Ayelet works to stop the generational cycle of violence. By helping the mothers leave the cycle of violence and create a new non-violent family model, their children will hopefully become free from the devastating effects of witnessing parental violence.","PeriodicalId":165629,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion & Abuse","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-07-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125705335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rabbis are in a unique position to educate the lay population and to create communities of support and comfort. Rabbis can share concepts, values, and texts from the Jewish tradition that highlight the sanctity < if the individual; they can ensure a Jewish presence in interfaith settings that address the issue of domestic violence; they can speak out to colleagues and community members; they can advocate for and create communities of honesty and trust.
