Materials and Methods: One trained examiner performed measurements of both lower limbs in two different occasions, with an interval of 48 hours between them. The sample consisted of 37 volunteers (28 women and 9 men) characterized as follows: history of fracture of lower limbs (n=5), presence of deformities of lower limbs (n=9), obese (n=9) and asymptomatic (n=14). Materials and Methods: It was chosen 145 women submitted to height, BMI, WC and blood pressure measurements. The cut-off points for BMI and WC followed previous definitions shown in literature. The evaluation of physical activity was given by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), short version. The descriptive method, frequency distribution and logistic regression, directed to obtain the Odds Ratio, with confidence interval (CI) of 95% adopting p<0.05, were used. Results: Physical activity did not associate with hypertension, and significant Odds Ratio was found for overweight (OR=6.36; IC=1.49-27.09; p=0.01), obesity (OR=26.70; IC=6.19-115.09; p=0.00) e WC level of action 2 (OR=25.71; IC=6.44-102.70; p=0.00). Discussion: The regular physical activity is recommended for the blood pressure control; nevertheless, this research found no ratio to hypertension, but the anthropometric indexes were efficient on this proposal.","PeriodicalId":164994,"journal":{"name":"Fitness & Performance Journal","volume":"20 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120855875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 123 elderly (100 women and 23 men) with mean age of 69.4±6.12 years. For data collection, a questionnaire regarding age, sex, presence of comorbidities, physical activity and questions about urinary incontinence was used. Results: There was a predominance of urinary incontinence stress (50.0%), followed by mixed urinary incontinence (26.6%) and urinary incontinence urgency (23.4%). Only 10.4% of elderly reported symptoms of loss of urine during physical activity. Discussion: The urinary incontinence stress was the predominant type in the sample, contrasting with literature. Despite the small number of participants with urinary loss during physical activity, there are no conclusive studies yet, which report pelvic floor damage associated with the practice of it.","PeriodicalId":164994,"journal":{"name":"Fitness & Performance Journal","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130996774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materiais e Metodos: A amostra foi constituida de 15 mulheres, com idade entre 60 e 87 anos (67,8±6,9). Os protocolos utilizados foram: (a) nivel de atividade fisica, (Questionario Baecke Modificado para Idosos), (b) autonomia funcional (bateria de testes do Grupo de Desenvolvimento Latino-Americano para Maturidade, GDLAM) e (c) qualidade de vida (questionario WHOQOL-OLD). O tratamento estatistico foi composto por analise descritiva. Os dados foram analisados por meio do SPSS, versao 13.0 for Windows. Resultados: Pela analise dos resultados, foi possivel observar que os niveis de atividade fisica e os indicadores de autonomia para realizar as atividades da vida diaria pelo protocolo GDLAM atingiram indices insatisfatorios, reforcando a premissa de que o envelhecimento, associado a uma vida sedentaria, provoca diminuicao da capacidade funcional. Em relacao a qualidade de vida, constatou-se que seus indices apresentaram resultados satisfatorios (QVG-OLD=13). Discussao: Recomenda-se a realizacao de intervencao, por meio de um programa de treinamento fisico regular com um numero maior de idosas, para melhor verificacao dos niveis nos testes realizados.","PeriodicalId":164994,"journal":{"name":"Fitness & Performance Journal","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127359070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
