Minority groups have more economic and technological barriers to accessible health services and accordingly are more restricted in their use.2 Over the years, data show that improved accessibility of low socio-economic population to health services has helped to reduce inequalities in health, and as a result, also to reduce death rates.3 Barriers to accessibility may be caused by factors within the health system (the supplier), such as gaps in population coverage or insurance coverage; insufficient coverage of the health basket; geographical barriers such as distance from services; organizational barriers that are liable to include waiting lists and working hours of the organization; the lack or absence of coordinated information; or the difference in cultural backgrounds between caregivers and patients. The barriers may also be due to factors associated with the patient (the consumer), such as type of treatment and its adaptation to the patient; income; age; ethnic and cultural background; medical history.2","PeriodicalId":163225,"journal":{"name":"MOJ Gerontology & Geriatrics","volume":"535 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123081130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reaching old age once the privilege of a few has become the norm even in the poorest countries. The challenge, therefore, is to add quality to these additional years of life. This demographic transition and the improvement in Brazil’s social and economic indicators, compared to previous decades, have led to the expansion of the elderly population and greater fiscal pressure on public and private health systems. If this portion of the population increases, chronic diseases and expenditures also naturally increase.1 One of the results of this dynamic is the growing demand for health services, which can simultaneously generate scarcity and/or resource constraints. Hospital admissions become more frequent and bed occupancy times are greater than in other age groups. The diseases that affect the elderly are mostly chronic and multiple, require constant monitoring, permanent care, continuous medication and periodic examinations.2","PeriodicalId":163225,"journal":{"name":"MOJ Gerontology & Geriatrics","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127290628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was conducted online, primarily at PubMed the academic database platform. Due to its focus on a specific age group, the terms of research were divided in three parts: i) “Elderly AND atraumatic restorative treatment AND root caries”; ii) “Elderly AND atraumatic restorative treatment AND glass ionomer cement”; and iii) Glass ionomer cement AND root caries”. Out of all the works found, 21 tackled the issue specifically. The existing literature, thus, has indicated that glass ionomer cements are ideal because of their advantages in terms time, costs, and clinical application. Nevertheless, more randomized and controlled studies are needed to offer more conclusive answers on its efficacy in the treatment of cavity lesions in elderly patients, as well as the advantages of using such technique.","PeriodicalId":163225,"journal":{"name":"MOJ Gerontology & Geriatrics","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121121651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
