Laying out for the first time a communitarian vision for journalism, the authors of Good News argued for a third way between collectivism and individualism, between local and global, between situated moral propositions and authoritative abstract principles. Their landmark work went on to inform debates about the public/civic journalism movement (see, e.g., Black, 1997) and to inspire a generation of media ethics scholars (myself included) to generate critiques, refinements, and alternatives to their communitarian theory (e.g., Borden, 2009; Coleman, 2000; Plaisance, 2005). In the meantime, the authors themselves have continued to develop their framework, teasing out its implications for normative press theories, citizen participation, media accountability, and global understanding (e.g., Christians, Glasser, McQuail, Nordenstreng, & White, 2009; Christians & Traber, 1997; Fortner & Fackler, 2010).","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117173175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected from self-administered surveys of 222 registered lobbyists in Oregon. A factor analysis reduced 18 ethical criteria to seven underlying factors describing lobbyists' ethical approaches to their work. Results indicate that lobbyists consider the following factors in their day-to-day professional activities: situation, strategy, argument, procedure, nature of lobbying, priority, and accuracy. This framework, derived from Edgett's 10 criteria, illustrates the importance of context while incorporating ideas from recognized ethical theories.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130035323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study reports journalists' perceptions of their professional roles and responsibilities regarding the relationships between industry and academia and research results. Journalists believe that responsibility for the scientific validity of their reports rests with academics and systems of peer review. However, this approach fails to account for the extent of industry-academy interactions and the flaws of peer review. Health journalists' retention of a critical stance regarding industry-academia relationships will include advocacy for and adoption of mandatory reporting of these relationships.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132533147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study found little ethics training and written guidelines in the public relations workplace. Organizational ethics initiatives are poorly communicated to practitioners and rely mostly on punitive restraints with little reward for ethical behavior. For many practitioners, ethics is not learned through workplace ethics initiatives but rather is mostly informed by external influences including personal values, family upbringing, and professional work experiences.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130047447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
