Since 2005, Switzerland has witnessed a major increase in the number of timber constructions, mainly due to the new fire prevention regulations and to the climate and energy goals that the country wants to meet in the near future. This growth has been less significant in southern Switzerland. Data given by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) shows the climatic advantages of the spread of timber constructions. Therefore, the opportunities for increasing the growth of such constructions in southern Switzerland have been researched. In order to identify and take advantage of the unique features of the use of wood in this region, two recent timber buildings, the Nordic Ski Centre by Durisch & Nolli, and the House in Ludiano by Tocchetti & Pessina, are analyzed and presented in this paper. The case of southern Switzerland can be a model for the spread of timber constructions in other similar regions.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125240247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The structural capability of bridge structures and parts thereof to react to these damages in a vulnerable or robust manner is a key indicator for the failure probability. The structural robustness of the structure is thus an addi- tional initial information for a qualified condition assessment in maintenance management and for the prioritisation of measures. Originally designed for traffic water structures, the newly developed method for determining the structural robustness and its linkage of damage processes to a \"condi- tion class\" is transferred to bridge structures. This enables a typological clustering of similar types of structures with regard to damage processes as well as the prioritisation of repair measures in the structure portfolio.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"52 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114002872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous studies have investigated slip behavior with a filler plate. They have proposed the reduction factor of slip resistance. On the other hand, the ultimate strength of such a joint with a filler plate is not clear, and its design strength considering after-slip behavior is not also specified. In this study, for high-strength bolted frictional joints with various filler plate thicknesses, tensile tests and FEA were carried out. From obtained results, it was revealed that a filler plate did not resist load in bearing, and the number of bolt shear failure surfaces was decreased to one from two by a filler plate. It is also found that bolt shear strength decreased below the designed value as filler plate thickness is increased. The authors also proposed the simple design model for bolt shear strength in the frictional joints with a filler plate.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"89 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114023116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this lightweight characteristic makes it sensitive to excitations from vehicular traffic leading to dominating dynamic design over the static one. The dynamic design of highway bridges by the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CSA S6-19) is based on the concept of equivalent dynamic amplification factors (DAF), which were derived largely based on the observations from bridges constructed with traditional materials such as concrete, wood and steel. It is prudent to evaluate whether these factors are applicable to lightweight bridges made with extruded aluminium decks. In addition, since road roughness plays an important role in the dynamic behaviour of a bridge, it is important to consider the influence of roughness on the bridge vibration response. The objective of this research is to investigate the dynamic behaviour of aluminium deck-on-steel girder bridges under vehicular loads considering the effect of road roughness, and consequently evaluate the applicability of the current design DAFs for such structures. For this purpose, numerical models have been developed in Abaqus for a range of selected bridge configurations and loading parameters and subsequently the key observations and conclusions from the numerical analysis have been presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131150699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, economical and user-friendly design concepts for welded connections of high strength steels are required. Current design rules had been developed mainly for mild steels, e.g. requiring an overmatching of the filler metal. It is not considered, that a soft area which may form in the heat-affected zone of welded high strength steel connections may lead to an overestimation of the load-carrying capacity. Besides, mixed connections as well as under- and overmatching filler metals are not included in the current design codes. Based on a large number of experimental and numerical investigations, a design concept has been developed which takes the characteristics of butt welded high strength steel connections into account. Additionally, experimental and numerical investigations are planned to transfer the new concept of design also to mixed connections.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"219 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131541414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, some strategies to improve the RSM efficacy without compromising its accuracy are tested. Initially, each strategy is implemented to assess the safety level of a highly nonlinear explicit limit state function. The strategy with the best results is then identified and used to carry out a reliability analysis of a prestressed concrete bridge, considering the nonlinear material behavior through NLFEA simulation. The calculated value of 𝛽 is compared with the target value established in Eurocode for ULS. The results showed how RSM can be a practical methodology and how the improvements presented can reduce the computational cost of a traditional RSM giving a good alternative to simulation methods such as Monte Carlo.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"13 1-2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132571946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering the difficulties encountered in both carrying out wind tunnel tests that consider the vehicle speed or complete CFD analyses, a simplified CFD approach is here discussed. Instead of simulating simultaneously the windscreen plus the moving train, the numerical problem is split into two parts: firstly, a simulation of the windshield alone is used to extract the perturbed velocity profile at the railway location; secondly, this profile used as an inlet condition for the wind velocity acting on an isolated train. The method is validated against a complete train plus windshield simulation in terms of pressure distribution and aerodynamic force coefficients on the train, and flow streamlines. This approach opens to the possibility of evaluating the aerodynamic performance of a vehicle on bridges considering bridge and vehicle as separated. Wind velocity profiles measured on the bridge during a wind tunnel campaign could be used as the initial condition for numerical simulations on vehicles.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115541558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of the CRCP segment with partial surface saw-cuts has been developed using the FE tool Diana 10.3. The early-age behaviour of CRCP subjected to external varying temperature field condition has been evaluated by using the staggered structural-flow analysis. The characteristics of the early-age crack pattern in terms of crack initiation and crack propagation obtained from the FE model are compared with the field observations of cracking developments on the CRCP sections in Belgium. The FE results indicate that the vertical tensile stress in concrete near the longitudinal steel bar develops at the transverse crack interface. It translates that the horizontal crack perpendicular to the vertical concrete stress can initiate from the transverse crack depending on the magnitude of stress against developing concrete tensile strength. It has also been observed that the deeper the saw-cut, the larger the magnitude of vertical tensile stress and the higher incident of horizontal cracking. Moreover, the developed 3D FE model can be further used to optimize the early-age behaviour of CRCP in advance of costly field trials.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114475121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
