The major degradation process is chloride attack, followed by carbonation, which both lead to corrosion of the reinforcing steel. In this paper chlorides in the concrete are analysed with a new method, which represents a major improvement over previous assessment. The paper also introduces a new concept for the durability assessment by using objective indicators, like chloride content, electrical resistivity, and corrosion potential. For objectivity and a reliable determination of the condition state, an overall performance index derived from the condition indices using an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is adopted. The model is applied to excellent and dense data from a monitoring system and investigations taken from reinforced concrete components beside the motorway.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122656039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new concept of a rigid pavement structure is developed to eliminate unnecessary continuous longitudinal steel bars of CRCP by using partial length steel bars at predetermined crack locations. In Belgium, partial surface saw-cuts are used as the most effective crack induction method to eliminate the randomness in early-age crack patterns by inducing cracks at the predetermined locations of CRCP. The reinforcement layout of ARCP is designed based on the distribution of steel stress in continuous longitudinal steel bar in CRCP and the effectiveness of partial surface saw-cuts as a crack induction method. The 3D finite element (FE) model is developed to evaluate the behaviour of ARCP with partial surface saw-cuts. The early-age crack characteristics in terms of crack initiation and crack propagation obtained from the FE simulation are validated with the field observations of cracking characteristics of the CRCP sections in Belgium. The finding indicates that ARCP exhibits the same cracking characteristics as CRCP even with a significantly reduced amount of continuous reinforcement.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122717632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this article presents a brief literature review of the state of the art that was conducted regarding the methodologies and models for the critical infrastructure’s risk management and the importance of categorizing its level of risk and the criticality of each infrastructure. This paper consists of three main parts i) A short introduction on the background and importance of this study; ii) a brief display and explanation of the inspected methodologies for risk management and the quantification of the criticality of CI; iii) implementation of the selected methodologies applied on a case study situated in the north of Portugal applied to Fire Risk.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123816152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corrosion has been confirmed at corners and the boundary of concrete-wrapped concrete in steel piers. It was found that corrosion damage at the corner of steel piers causes a decrease of seismic performance in our previous investigations that carried out seismic response analysis. Subsequently, in this study, the effect of corrosion damage at the near ground edge of steel bridge piers with a rectangular cross-section was investigated in detail on the buckling behaviour and seismic performance of structures. As a result, it is found that the buckling at the base causes a decrease in load bearing performance compared to the buckling in the entire panel. It is necessary to properly maintain to prevent buckling at the base caused by corrosion.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126263166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The energy-dissipation bars, which are generally applied at the rocking joints of hybrid rocking columns, could improve their energy dissipation capacities. Thus, the reasonable reinforcement ratio of energy-dissipation bars is much required for engineering applications. To determine the reasonable reinforcement ratio of energy-dissipation bars, a numerical investigation is conducted in this paper based on nonlinear time-history analysis. The analysis results show that a reasonable reinforcement ratio of energy-dissipation bars can effectively reduce seismic displacements of the hybrid rocking columns, without excessive residual deformations. Further, the reasonable reinforcement ratio of energy-dissipation bars for hybrid rocking columns with different periods is proposed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125549428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The premise of the article is that infrastructure owners will take action to provide those resources when they can see value accruing to them; therefore narratives around value generation and business cases are required to motivate and support that action. This paper explores the application of the value of information methodology to the challenge of developing a business case for bridge monitoring using an illustrative case study on a simulacrum of a road bridge in the UK. To this end, this paper presents a systematic approach for setting risk-informed bridge monitoring strategies while considering the reliability and accuracy of data capture offered by different monitoring techniques and the gains to be made downstream if it contributes to setting timely maintenance strategies.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124623987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The isolation of structural systems causes difficulties in the case of tall structures. We investigate the possibility of improving structural behaviour by organizing buildings into urban-scale structural networks, with focus on vortex-induced vibration. We review our recent work, in which randomly generated collections of high-rise buildings were examined by numerical simulation using a conceptual model of the network composed of springs and point masses. Here we examine the behaviour of a realistic collection of buildings, generated by considering the existing building stock and urban fabric of Midtown Manhattan. The new simulation results suggest that connections among the buildings would enable the application of significantly softer bracing systems. This finding suggests that urban-scale structural networks is a promising direction of urban development.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123131392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In total 36 fatigue tests equally categorised to 4 experimental series with two varying parameters (i) size diameter, M68 and M100, and (ii) surface treatment, hot-dip galvanized or as-rolled, were performed by the Institute of Structural Design at the Material Testing Institute of the University of Stuttgart. The tests conducted herein for rods of metric, cut threads validated the detail category 50 as well as its factor for size effect, while being slightly on the safe side.Additionally, one specimen of M100 as-rolled tension rods, equipped with six miniature strain gauges placed on the thread root of the upper tension rod was tested up to 4,8 MN of quasi-static monotonic tension load- ing until complete failure. Strain concentration factors for the thread root of the M100 tension rod were calculated.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123380714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, traditional measurement methods consume a lot of time and labor, especially for long-distance measurement. UAV photogrammetry has the advantages of high manoeuvrability, low cost, and independence on labour. The application of UAV to bridge alignment measurement can improve efficiency and promote construction control automation. In this paper, the framework and control parameters of UAV photogrammetry was studied. Experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of parameters on the measurement accuracy including flying height, angle of bundle, camera position and photo quantity. On this basis, the optimal parameters for bridge alignment photogrammetry are summarized. With the optimized measurement scheme, the coordinate measurement accuracy of each point can reach millimetre level.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"227 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115085817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deterioration and failures have increased in the already aging bridges due to consistent growth in traffic volume and axle loads. Therefore, the importance of Bridge Management Systems (BMS) to ensure safety of operation and maximize maintenance investments has also increased. Recent improvements in technology also contribute to the demand for optimized and more resource-efficient BMS. In this study, a literature review was performed to map current bridge management practices and systems in operation in the world. The outcomes identified Bridge Information Modelling (BrIM) and Digital Twins as novel approaches that enable efficient management of the whole lifecycle of a bridge. From these outcomes, a framework of an ideal BMS is proposed to achieve automated and smart management of bridges.","PeriodicalId":162435,"journal":{"name":"IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs","volume":"384 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116484410","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
