This study uses a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach that aims to find and describe the meaning of the shape of the mosque. The arrival of Indians to East Sumatra was initially recruited to become contract laborers in various tobacco plantations owned by Dutch businessmen. Then the 9th Sultan of Deli, Sultan Makmul al-Rashid, donated his land to the Indians as a place for them to live. The land given by the Sultan of Deli is currently known as Kampung Keling or Kampung Madras. On that land the Indian Muslim community established two mosques, namely: the Jamik Mosque and the Ghaudiyah Mosque. Jamik Mosque was built in 1887 AD, and is one of the oldest mosques in Medan City. In this article, this author examines the history of the Jamik Mosque and its transformation from a place of worship into a religious tourist spot.","PeriodicalId":162421,"journal":{"name":"Warisan: Journal of History and Cultural Heritage","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114244103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Great Mosque of Sri Alam Dunia is a silent witness to the struggle of the Mandailing scholars in expanding the symbols of Islam in the South Tapanuli region. At first, the Sri Alam Dunia Mosque was a small surah that was used as a place to study religion. The central figures who contributed to the process of establishing this mosque were Sheikh Abdul Manan Siregar and the Muslims who live around the mosque. This mosque was built around 1926 AD and was completed in 1933 AD. The Padri war that occurred to the Mandailing land area led to the migration of the Mandailing ethnic group who had embraced Islam to the Minangkabau region. This migration also brings with it customs and traditions that were previously practiced, one of which is the Magido Bantu tradition. This tradition has its own procession and implementation procedures that are different from the traditions commonly practiced by the Mandailing ethnic group in other regions. The implementation of this tradition has so many positive values in it, including: an attitude of help, mutual respect, deliberation, and so on.
