The main results of this work are: (1) The smoothing parameter variations significantly impact on performance of the supply chains characterised by low information sharing level. (2) As smoothing parameters increase, the supply chain process performance improves and the customer service level worsens. This opposite trend noticeably decreases as information sharing level increases. (3) Amongst the bullwhip dampening techniques, deeper information sharing weights more than the value of smoothing parameters. The analysis is performed through continuous time differential equation modelling.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123770906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study is to minimize the total inventory, backorder, and transshipments costs, based on the replenishment and transshipment quantities. In this study, transshipments which are the transfer of products among locations at the same echelon level and transportation capacities which are the transshipment quantities between stocking locations, are also considered. Here, the transportation capacities among the stocking locations are bounded due to transportation media or the locations¿ transshipment policy. Assuming stochastic demand, the system is modeled based on different cases of transshipment capacities and costs. To find out the optimum levels of the transshipment quantities among stocking locations and the replenishment quantities, the simulation model of the problem is developed using ARENA 10.0 and then optimized using the OptQuest tool in this software.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"77 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121915635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each severity level is associated with a due date and a penalty, which is incurred if the service request is not resolved by the due date. Motivated by Van Meighem (2003), who shows the asymptotic optimality of the generalized longest queue policy for the problem of minimizing the due date dependent expected delay costs when there is a single agent, we develop a class of index-based policies that is a generalization of the priority first-come-first-serve, weighted shortest expected processing time and generalized longest queue policy. In our simulation study of an assignment system of a large technology firm, the index-based policy shows an improvement of 0-20 % over the priority first-come-first-serve policy depending upon the load conditions.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"18 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120902248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To approximate the mean-value function, the method exploits a specially formulated polynomial that is constrained in least-squares estimation to be nondecreasing so the corresponding rate function is nonnegative and smooth (continuously differentiable). An experimental performance evaluation for two typical test problems demonstrates the method¿s ability to yield an accurate fit to an NHPP based on a single process realization. A third test problem shows how the method can estimate an NHPP based on multiple realizations of the process.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116343497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed architecture integrates a PLC program with a corresponding plant model, so that users can intuitively verify the PLC program in a 3D graphic environment. The plant model includes all manufacturing devices of a production system as well as corresponding device programs to perform their tasks in the production system, and a PLC program contains the control logic for the plant model. For the implementation of the proposed PLC programming environment, it is essential to develop an efficient methodology to construct a virtual device model as well as a virtual plant model. The proposed PLC programming environment provides an efficient construction method for a plant model based on the DEVS (discrete event systems specifications) formalism, which supports the specification of discrete event models in a hierarchical, modular manner.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126575699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We expect that ¿what-if¿-analysis in games enables the trainees to achieve more robust results, which is defined as the ability to achieve the required goals given different scenarios. Scenarios are defined as exogenous variables on the multiple worlds. Viable decisions for a particular world are assessed by splitting the given world into multiple ones and running simulations for these new worlds. This assessment is performed by a) comparing the alternatives represented by each world and b) exploring the timeline of each world by selecting specific time instants. The navigation both through multiple worlds and through time should provide the users the possibility to formulate a robust answer for the specified problem. We will present a viable architecture and 4 distinct modes of game-play for the simulation game.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127210412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
