The addition of filler imparts excellent thermal properties and also tracking resistance. However, the effect of space charge in the bulk of polymer material with filler is rarely studied. The main intention of the work is to understand the analytically, the space charge physics and its temporal evolution under the application of a DC electric field. The space charge accumulation in the bulk of the polymer material and its variation with the application of DC voltage and temperature is being computed in the present work.","PeriodicalId":162130,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 5th International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130694442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed acoustic TR method can locate the PD source in the transformer using only one acoustic sensor, whereas the time difference of arrival (TDOA) based method requires more than one sensor. The proposed method includes three steps (a) measurement of the acoustic PD signal using one sensor (b) time reversing and back injection of the measured signal into the transformer model through numerical simulation (c) determine the focusing point of the back injected signal using appropriate criterion which provides the location of the PD source. The finite element method (FEM) based two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulation model of the transformer with acoustic PD source is implemented in COMSOL multiphysics. The simulation model is used to investigate the acoustic PD wave propagation in the transformer. The maximum acoustic pressure field criterion is used to locate the PD source in the transformer.","PeriodicalId":162130,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 5th International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125455547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work investigates the performance of Silver- coated zinc oxide (Ag-ZnO) microvaristor characterized by non-linear field-dependent conductivity as an FGM for outdoor polymeric insulators. Electroquasistatic finite element method (FEM) based simulations are carried out on an 11 kV, 2-D, uniformly, and non-uniformly wet insulator with dry bands in the presence of Ag-ZnO microvaristor using COMSOL Multiphysics. Microvaristors of cylindrical and conical shapes are considered, and an optimum design is selected among them. Also, the suitable placement of the microvaristor at the FRP core and silicon rubber interface is evaluated. Simulation studies show that an appropriate microvaristor having the right design and electrical property can significantly reduce the electric stress in the critical region and improve the field distribution.","PeriodicalId":162130,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 5th International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115738748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Power Electronic Converter (PEC) consists of components, such as IGBTs, capacitors, and gate-drive circuits. These components are subject to failure due to their continuous operation in different operating conditions. The failure of any of these components can lead to the subsequent failure of other components and, eventually, the failure of the entire PEC. This paper reviews the present status in condition monitoring of the IGBT, solder, and capacitor in a PEC and also emphasizes on the key challenges of these techniques so as to develop an appropriate condition monitoring technique by proper academic research. The deviation in gate voltage-time characteristics, ON-state voltage, thermal resistance, and switching time of IGBT, are detected using various methods. Sensor and vibration-based methods are also discussed to monitor the condition of the bond wire. In addition, different methods are discussed to measure the capacitance value or Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) value of a capacitor to judge its condition. Deviation of these values from a threshold helps in early detection and replacement before the occurrence of a fault. The benefits and limitations of these methods are also highlighted. Finally, the key issues and challenges in the condition monitoring of PECs are presented.","PeriodicalId":162130,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 5th International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"455 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115913001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently several long distance HVDC transmissions are being executed and planned in the country, numerous converter stations have come up as a key link between the HVDC systems. Hence, there is a need for utmost protection for the converter stations. Composite or polymer housed ZnO surge arresters are being extensively used to protect the equipment to overcome various electrical stresses. There is no clear understanding of the aging of polymeric housed surge arrester used for the HVDC transmission system with scant information available. One important parameter proven to be highly challenging is the estimation/performance of the thermal behavior of polymeric arresters used in converter stations to withstand standard and non-standard surges encountered in the service. It is a known fact that voltage-current characteristics of zinc oxide varistors become degraded due to a series of stresses in service conditions. The present paper attempts a comprehensive review of degradation methods and the need for multi-stress aging studies on HVDC surge arresters. The paper highlights the current work initiated at our laboratory towards understanding more realistic and reliable assessment on aging/performance of surge arresters towards standard, nonstandard and complex waveshapes, along with the change in power flow and effect of voltage polarity reversal at the HVDC stations.","PeriodicalId":162130,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 5th International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126917160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the approaches is to use sensors embedded in the system, and the measured data will be utilized for estimation of remaining life using end-of-life based diagnostic algorithms. Currently these sensors are selected based on the detectability of features for diagnostics algorithms, without attention to the diagnostic algorithms outcomes at the system level. Relating the diagnostic algorithm critical-to-quality (CTQ) metrics to system level outcomes for maintenance activities is addressed in this paper with a capacitor bank case study. Comparison of the diagnostic algorithm outcome with the actual scenario is carried out by using a confusion matrix and related with system measures such as no fault found and operational interruption rate. Normal probability density functions (pdf) are plotted for healthy capacitor bank and algorithm estimations for degraded capacitor bank at derived mean and standard deviation. Intersecting area of the actual capacitance pdf with the estimated pdf is calculated based on % degradation at various tolerance levels of capacitance estimation. Finding of this method is that the sensor must measure capacitance with 1 to 2% error tolerance for minimum impact on system level outcomes at all levels of capacitor degradation.","PeriodicalId":162130,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 5th International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131181856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It helps to improve the overall machine performance, capacity, sustainability and user safety. IoT serves as a well- planned structure for condition monitoring with the flexibility to integrate more number of devices to be monitored and controlled remotely. In this paper, a real-time condition monitoring prototype of low voltage industrial motor is developed. The prototype majorly monitors three vital parameters, temperature, vibration and speed of the motor using suitable sensors connected to Zigbee module sending data wirelessly to the remote end using IoT. These data are then fed from Thingspeak server to the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) to estimate the health of the motor. The complete devised prototype performs the function of monitoring, processing data, decision making and data storage remotely without any considerable user intervention.","PeriodicalId":162130,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 5th International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132877395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although mid-infrared (mIR) absorption spectroscopy is widely used, far-infrared (fIR) and THz absorption spectroscopy are not. This article shows that the use of all these spectroscopic tools is valuable for a deep understanding of materials, especially for dielectric materials. The reason for this is that the mIR photons are suitable to detect intramolecular vibrations or vibrations of a relatively small chemical group, whereas the fIR photons can detect vibrations of an entire molecule or those of a large chemical group. Furthermore, the THz spectroscopy is adequate to detect intermolecular vibrations. Several typical experimental results obtained by the authors, showing the above, are introduced.","PeriodicalId":162130,"journal":{"name":"2021 IEEE 5th International Conference on Condition Assessment Techniques in Electrical Systems (CATCON)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133876869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
