Stone column technique seems to be very suitable and favourable ground improvement technique for deep soft soil improvement. Further to prevent excessive bulging, squeezing of stone into soft soil, stone column can be encased with suitable geosynthetic. Another advantage of encasement is having high load carrying capacity and lesser settlement of composite foundation. This paper presents the current state of the geosynthetic encased stone column as a ground improvement technique. A review is provided aiming to: (a) identify key considerations for the general use of encased stone columns, (b) provide insights for design and construction, (c) compile the latest research developments. Case histories of field applications and observed field performance are cited to portray different stone column applications and observed effectiveness. The paper identifies areas where more research is needed and includes recommendations for future research and development.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117166085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A representative relation between intensity measures (IMs) and engineering demand parameters (EDPs) forms the basis of the PSDM. This study aims to develop an optimal PSDM for typical pile-supported wharf structures using 2D numerical model of 5 centrifuge models tested at UC Davis campus and performing probabilistic seismic demand analysis (PSDA) under a pool of ground motion records. In PSDA the relation between certain EDPs and specific IMs is formulated by statistic nonlinear time-history analysis. For these structures, the optimal PSDM derived thorugh several IM_EDP pairs, should be practical, sufficient, effective and efficient. According to these criteria, in resulted IM-EDP pairs, Sa determined as the optimal IM and moment curvature ductility factor (μΦ), horizontal displacement of embankment and differential settlement between deck and behind land are considered for optimal local, intermediate and global EDP quantities, respectively. The Sa-displacement ductility factor (μd) determined as the best optimal IM-EDP pair. The results are useful to owners and designers for assessment seismic performance of pile-supported wharf structures.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132841983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ordinary portland cement was replaced by 0, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70% class F fly ash (by weight). Water- binder ratio in all mixture was kept constant at 0.3. Cube specimens were compacted in table vibrator. As expected bulk density decreases with fly ash increment in the mixture. Apparent porosity and water absorption value increases with replacement of cement by fly ash. Results confirm the decrease in compressive strength at 3, 7 and 28 day with fly ash addition and it is more prominent in case of more than 30% fly ash content mixes. Ultrasonic pulse velocity test results indicate that the quality of the paste deteriorate with increase of fly ash content in the mixture.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132876613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increased competitions among mobile operators also have contributed to the installation of many towers to enhance both coverage area and network reliability. The tower locations as specified in terms of latitudes and longitudes with the height of mounted antenna dictated by functional requirements of the network. The availability of land which satisfies ideal installation conditions in urban areas is extremely limited giving no alternative but to adopt roof top towers (with marginal adjustment in position but not in height). In the present study, the seismic response of 4-leged telecommunication tower has been studied under the effect of design spectrum from the Indian seismic code of practice for Zone-IV. The analysis has been performed on ground tower and tower located on the roof of host structure by varying positions of tower with increasing the stiffness of host structure in the both direction (X and Y). Their dynamic analyses are performed by SAP2000 program. The axial forces of the tower members are considered as the main parameter. The comparison has been made between rooftop tower and ground tower members at the same height from the ground.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130023897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Indian code of practice for wind load on buildings and structures (IS-875 Part-3 1987) gives a procedure to determine along wind response of tall structures, while the across wind response and interference effect are not included in the code at present. A document ‘Review of Indian Wind Code IS 875 (Part 3) 1987’ has been prepared by IIT Kanpur under GSDMA project gives recommendations to obtain across wind response of tall buildings as per procedure given in Australian/New Zealand standard ‘Structural Design Actions – Part 2 Wind Action (AS/NZS 1170-2: 2002) In the Australian code to obtain the cross wind response it is necessary to compute the coefficient (Cfs) for which figures and expressions are given for selected (h:b:d) ratios. In this paper use of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been made to generalize the above procedure from the limited available data, so that across wind response can be obtained for a building with given (h:b:d) ratio.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130085422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In brief, UHPdC is a cementitious based composite material that consists of the distinctive characteristics of the ultra-high performance concrete and high tensile strength steel fibers. UHPdC is a sustainable construction material with considerable amount of durability, ductility and tensile capacity which is mostly appropriate for use in the fabrication of precast members in civil engineering, structural and architectural applications. This paper presents a review on the UHPdC technology including an overview of material characteristics of a Malaysian UHPdC blend (i.e. Dura®), the principles of UHPdC development, its mix design, its advantages, and its applications.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128764316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The governing equations solved in this regards are the St. Venant equations. These equations are highly non-linear partial deferential equation and closed form solutions are not available except in very simplified one dimensional case. The computer revolution in twentieth century made a new era where numeric methods can be utilized effectively to solve nonlinear partial differential equations. Though several numerical schemes have been developed by various investigators for solving these equations, the choosing of efficient scheme regarding its efficiency, accuracy and computational effort has always been remaining as an important topic from very beginning. In this paper mainly results of two different schemes, Lax diffusive scheme and Beam and warming scheme are presented. Validations of the models were achieved by comparing their results with results of MIKE21C modeling tool. The results in terms of surface profiles at different times and velocity vectors for both the schemes when plotted, it was observed that both the schemes lead to same results. But in case of the Beam and Warming scheme, it was observed that it takes a very large computational time for simulation.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128382972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Normal concrete is being produced from different types of aggregate and this imparts different property to the resulting concrete. The most important property of concrete is its compressive strength. For the purpose of this work, three types of coarse aggregates, quartzite, granite, and river gravel, were used. The fine aggregate is normal sand obtained from a borrow pit. Preliminary laboratory investigation was conducted to ascertain the suitability of using the aggregates for construction work. Tests conducted include sieve analysis, bulk density, and specific gravity. Nominal mix (1:2:4) was adopted for this work and mix compositions were calculated by absolute volume method. For each type of coarse aggregate 75 cubes (150x150mm) were cast to allow the compressive strength to be monitored at 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Test result show that concrete made from river gravel has the highest workability followed by crushed quartzite and crushed granite aggregates. Highest compressive strength at all ages was noted with concrete made from quartzite aggregate followed by river gravel and then granite aggregate. Compressive strength models were proposed as a function of age at curing. Where concrete practitioners have options, aggregate made from quartzite is advisable to be used for concrete work.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124319318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of vertical spacing of geotextile layers, slope inclination, and tensile strength of PET (Polyester) and PP (Polypropylene) geotextile behavior on reinforced flyash and clay mixed embankment, over a soft clay layer is studied. For present investigation study, a 8 m high embankment with 20 m crest width and slopes of 58°, 64°, 72°, and 78° are considered. Analysis was performed using the GEO5 – slope stability software version 12 after modeling the above standard geometry. Results divulge that use of full length of geotextile covering whole width of embankment can increase factor of safety (F.S) at steeper slope inclination. Also decreasing the slope inclination and vertical spacing of geotextile gives safer designs. From this study it is seen that reinforced embankment with PET geotextile gives economical and safe design, compared to PP geotextile when the creep phenomenon is considered as a governing factor.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131272389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
