The local soil and clay in and around Jalpaiguri town of West Bengal was mixed with the local sand, and stone grits to make a composite good soil of gravel 15 percent, Sand 50 percent, Silt and Clay 35 percent, for compacted stabilized earth blocks (CSEB).1 Blocks of 254 mm x 127 mm x 76 mm size, were prepared with varying percent of Ordinary Portland Cement (5.0 percent, 7.5 percent, and 10.0 percent) and jute fibre of size 2.5 cm and compacting manually to the standard proctor density. Jute size of 2.5cm was chosen as it was found best option from earlier investigation by the same author 8 compared to other sizes from mixing and compressive strength point of view. The blocks were cured and tested for compressive strength, water absorption and density. Based on the results, it has been concluded that the compacted cement stabilized earth blocks both with or without jute fibre may be a cost effective and environment friendly alternative to the burnt clay bricks in lightly loaded building (rural areas) where stability is not a governing factor.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125121838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the effect of varying proportions of fly ash (30% and 40%) on compressive strength of high performance concrete has been evaluated. The mix designs studied were- M30, M40 and M50 to compare the effect of fly ash addition on the properties of these concrete mixes. In all nine concrete mixes have been designed, three as conventional concretes for three grades under discussion and six as HPC with fly ash with varying percentages of fly ash. The concrete mix designing has been done in accordance with Indian standard recommended guidelines i.e. IS: 10262:1982. All the concrete mixes have been studied in terms of compressive strength and flexural strength at 7 days, 28 days and 90 days. All the materials used have been kept same throughout the study to get a perfect comparison of values of results.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114218514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A basic description of their highly non-linear material behavior in terms of shape memory effect, superelasticity, martensite damping and variable stiffness is presented in this article. The load-deflection behaviors of SMA reinforced concrete (RC) beams have been analyzed using prediction model codes. The effects of the cross-sectional area, reinforcement ratio, yield strength of rebar, and span of beams were considered. Effective moment of inertia, cracking moment, instantaneous and long-term deflections under variable load on beams were analyzed using ACI 318 (2005), Eurocode 2 (CEN 2002), AS 3600 (2001) and CEB (1993) codes. Deflections of SMA reinforced beams were compared with deflections of similar beams reinforced with conventional steel to present the potential of SMAs in restricting instantaneous & long-term deflections. Finally, a new scope of experimental research work is proposed utilizing SMAs as reinforcement in RC flexural members to minimize instantaneous & long-term deflections.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133915805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Codal provisions are available to calculate deflections in RC members in general. The codal provisions for calculation of short-term deflection in RC two-way slab are based on the effective moment of inertia (Ieff), The Ieff depends on the cracking moment (Mr) and maximum moment due to service load (M). Short-term deflections determined based on the provision for two-way RC slabs, are not comparable with experimental values. Even sometime negative deflection is obtained with the procedure. Present paper gives a method designated as Equivalent Load Method, in which equivalent load is calculated using Grashoff-Rankine formulae, and is considered to be acting on the slab. The deflection calculated using equivalent load method is found to be closer to experimental values. The negative deflection has been tackled in literature by applying a factor of 0.7 to cracking moment (Mr). The deflection thus calculated again differs considerably with the experimental values. In the paper, with the method, a procedure has been proposed in which instead of the factor 0.7 being applied to Mcr; cracking moment of inertia is proposed to be used in place of effective moment of inertia. The deflection thus calculated has been found to be comparable with experimental results. Experimental data obtained and data available in literature have been used to validate the procedure. Experimental work has been carried out for two end conditions i.e. fixed supported and simply supported two-way RC slab. Six separate specimens were casted for both end condition of different thickness, sizes and for different loads.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115523510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the recent years, there has been an increased impetus to conduct research on damage identification using wavelet transforms. In the present work, discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has been used to detect, locate and quantify damage in beam elements. A generalised method has been proposed to solve damage identification in beams with a single dominant crack. The proposed quantification methodology uses only the measurements made in the current (damaged) state of the beam structure. The generalised method has been proposed using a Damage Intensity Factor (DIF) to quantify damage in all beams with similar edge conditions. Formulae have also been proposed to help in quantifying the damage in simply supported and fixed beams. The proposed method has been validated using problems taken from the literature. The applicability of the proposed method to solve multiple damage cases has been demonstrated using literature problems.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125822072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonlinear finite element analysis on 10-column specimens was achieved by using ANSYS software. The nonlinear finite element analysis program ANSYS is utilised owing to its capabilities to predict either the response of reinforced concrete columns in the post-elastic range or the ultimate strength of a reinforced concrete columns reinforced by FRP bars. An extensive set of parameters is investigated including different main reinforcement ratios, main reinforcement types (GFRP, Steel), the transverse reinforcement ratios, and the characteristic compressive strength of concrete. A comparison between the experimental results and those predicted by the existing models are presented. Results and conclusions may be useful for designers, have been raised, and represented.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127271204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A trial embankment constructed in Vaasa (Finland) is analyzed in this paper. The main purpose of the construction was the testing and development of the design methods for the planning of road embankments. Settlements at the base level of the embankment were measured with settlement plates, and deeper in the ground with magnetic extensometer. The pore pressures were measured using open and closed piezometer tips installed at different depths. For the task of analysis carried out in this paper, a finite element computer program named (3-DFEP) was written. The program can solve three-dimensional coupled problems. Both the soil solids and the pore water are modeled by 8-noded brick elements. It was found that the results of three-dimensional analysis are more stable than do plane-strain ones. The settlement became approximately constant after about (600) days. The settlement predicted at that time was approximately (400) mm that is in good agreement with the recorded field data while plane-strain results showed continuous increase in settlement after that time.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123758606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The construction sector has an enormous effect on the environment due to its massive resource consumption; therefore the development of a process to increase sustainability in this sector is paramount. In this sense the systems that assess sustainable construction play a key role. The emergence of voluntary evaluation and certification systems of construction enables the assessment of sustainability of buildings – their construction and operation. The evaluation and certification systems are in constant evolution, expanding their scope of application. Some countries are developing systems of sustainable construction evaluation adjusted to the local context. Through the study of different systems of evaluation and certification and their contents it was possible to identify and select the key factors that support the development of a system that is geared towards application at the regional level thus accomplishing the value of certification systems of sustainable construction.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"36 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132073555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fly ash, which is the residue from coal-fired power plants, when used as partial replacement of cement in concrete, results in reduction of cement consumption and CO2 production besides enhancing strength and durability properties. Deterioration of concrete structures due to rebar corrosion is a matter of significant concern since the cost of repairing and rehabilitation of these structures is very expensive. Fibres can be utilized to obtain a durable concrete with low shrinkage and improved strength properties. The objective of this work is to study the influence of polypropylene fibre in enhancing the strength and durability properties of fly ash blended concrete containing quarry dust as fine aggregate. The mechanical properties studied were compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength in addition to water absorption. The resistance to corrosion was evaluated by means of impressed voltage technique in saline medium, rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) and weight loss method. From the results it has been arrived that fly ash blended quarry dust concrete along with polypropylene fibre can be effectively and economically utilized in the construction industry.","PeriodicalId":162063,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Civil and Structural Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128848217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
