A new thermal model, based on effusivity, a parameter that can be analytically derived from the solution of the heat equation for a semi-infinite wall, was developed. The transient thermal response of a variety of building zones to a series of steps in heat gain has been measured for the validation of the thermal inertia models. It was observed that, for each step in gain, the mean surface temperature of the spaces increases proportionally to the square root of time, as predicted by the effusivity model. The results allowed the formulation of simple passive cooling design guidelines for buildings.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133876460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Numerous studies have been devoted to the analysis of the physical phenomena related to natural ventilation. These phenomena are very complex and our degree of understanding them often leaves a lot to be desired. Research on this topic within the framework of PASCOOL included experimental and modeling work aiming to fill existing gaps in our knowledge of indoor air conditions in naturally ventilated buildings. An extensive experimental program was carried out in full scale buildings and test cell facilities during the summer period in Greece, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland and Portugal. Existing models were validated and new ones were proposed. This paper gives a brief description of the experimental work and summarizes the results from the data analysis and model development within PASCOOL.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125922756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty-three buildings from nine European countries were surveyed and monitored for a short period during summertime. The measurements and survey data obtained formed the basis for sensitivity studies with thermal simulation. The selection encompassed buildings of typical construction, including both recent and traditional, residential and non-residential. The sensitivity studies addressed the effects of shading, thermal inertia, ventilation, window orientation and colour of external surfaces, envelope insulation, and occupancy patterns. The paper presents the methodology adopted for the measurements and sensitivity studies and discusses the main conclusions drawn from the studies- It identifies options for improving occupant thermal comfort with little or no mechanical cooling.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124883148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(ITFT) has developed, in co operation with Iowa State University (ISU) and the State of Iowa, a lightweight, flexible, monolithic thin-Film amorphous silicon module for electrical power generation. The solar modules are made using a roll-to-roll manufacturing process. The polyimide web substrate is 2 mils (0.05 mm) thick, 13 inches (33 cm) wide, and up to 2400 feet (732 m) long. The automated module manufacturing equipment can custom fabricate solar modules of a specified voltage and current for a given module area, using a method of monolithic creation and interconnection of solar cells on the substrate. Typical performance is five watts peak power per ft2 (0.094 m2) of module in bright sunlight.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125887784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is anticipated that production costs for PV cells and modules can be brought down to 500 and 1000 ECU/kW respectively by large upscaling of production. It is also expected that silicon will continue to be of central importance while thin-film cells deserve greatest attention in RTD. The “mass” market associated with such production plants has to be at least 100 MW per annum. This market can be stimulated through new building regulations and various financial support schemes.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130236516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on energy balance equation for each component of the system namely the flowing water, the glass cover, the water mass and the basin liner, an analytical expression for the temperature of the flowing water, the glass cover, the water mass and the yield have been derived. Further an expression for an instantaneous thermal efficiency as a function of climatic and design parameters have also been given. On the basis of numerical computation, it is inferred that there is significant improvement in the performance of a solar still due to water flow over the glass cover. The results have also been experimentally validated.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125399031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methodology to test and compare the various designs of solar stills is presented. Further an attempt is made to incorporate the effect of glass cover inclination and the resulting triangular cavity volume on the performance of solar still. The expressions given by various authors are considered to take into account the glass cover inclination. Based on experimental and theoretical computations it is inferred that there is good agreement between experimental and theoretical results.","PeriodicalId":162029,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Solar Energy","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130708940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
