As the inverter produces fast-switching voltage pulses, the transmission-line effects of the motor cable and motor stator windings become significant, and may lead to a doubling of the supply voltage to the motor and to the cable, causing premature failure of the motor and cable insulation. A typical protective measure is to use a passive filter to reduce the surge voltage and alter the rise time of the voltage pulses at the motor terminals. However, the filters have the drawbacks of bulky size and lossy. Importantly, the filter parameters are dependent on the cable length and characteristics. This paper presents a low-loss motor terminal filter that can suppress overvoltage and modify the rise time of the voltage pulses at the motor terminal for cables of any length. A comparative study into the performance between the popularly-used RC and RLC filters, and the proposed filter will be conducted. The proposed structure is confirmed by studying the experimental results of a 1-hp motor drive system.","PeriodicalId":161915,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition","volume":"39 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125741407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a novel digital control algorithm is presented to achieve the time-optimal response for dc-dc Buck converters without relying on any knowledge of converter design parameters such as output inductance, capacitance and even ESR value. This algorithm is based on the parabolic curve fitting analysis for deriving the algorithm formulas under the step load transients. Furthermore, this algorithm can be extended to adaptive voltage positioning (AVP) applications with simple modifications for a low ESR designed Buck converter. Also, it delivers a practical and cost-effective interface to AVP schemes due to the parameter-independent and current-sensorless detecting mechanism. Finally, simulations and experimental results of a 12 V-1.5 V Buck converter prototype are provided to validate the proposed schemes using digital signal processor (DSP) implementation.","PeriodicalId":161915,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115773064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the use of selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (HEPWM) for a three-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) converter in VSC based HVDC application will be discussed. Steady state performance of the converter system in terms of harmonics and losses will be evaluated using MATLAB and PSCAD/EMTDC simulation. Simulation results show a 37% improvement in total semiconductor loss with better harmonic performance by using the three-level solution compared to the two-level solution with the stated modulation scheme.","PeriodicalId":161915,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115882787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The demagnetization of PM occurred distortion of air-gap magnetic flux distribution caused deterioration of their torque, mechanical vibration etc. In this paper, for minimization of mechanical vibration, the optimal PM shape is designed and the effect of the circulating current in shorted turns on the demagnetization of PM and motor performance is analyzed. For this analysis, this paper developed a FE-based simulation model with a stator turn fault modeling. The demagnetization phenomenon in IPM type BLDC is analyzed under continuously controlled 3-phase input current considering the circulating current in shorted turn using the developed transient analysis method.","PeriodicalId":161915,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition","volume":"19 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132063567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The traits of this converter are high power density, no cross-regulation issue and reduced usage of copper. LLC is a well-known resonant converter achieving wide operation range with high efficiency. DAB also features low component stress, few output filter components, ZVS operation. Proposed architecture not only integrates the merits of LLC and DAB, but also eliminates the issues of DAB, such as the loss of ZVS at light load. The outer cage of double cage rotors is vulnerable to fatigue failure since it must withstand the large thermal/mechanical stresses experienced during a loaded startup due to the high starting current and long acceleration time. However, there are only a few publications that investigate broken bar detection for double cage induction motors. In this paper, the detectability of broken outer cage bars in double cage motors for the most commonly used rotor bar test methods is evaluated. A finite element and experimental study show that the sensitivity of on-line MCSA is significantly decreased, whereas that of off-line standstill tests is not influenced for broken outer cage bars. This suggests that one should be aware of the insensitivity of MCSA for double cage rotors, and there is a need for development of new on-line monitoring methods.","PeriodicalId":161915,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134240660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As compared to previous approaches, the presented technique doesn't require any torque observer and calculation of commutation time which may be sensitive to motor parameters and require more calculation time. The commutation time for the presented technique is determined by a detection circuit which consists of simple comparator circuit. Experimental results derived from an FPGA-based controlled BLDCM drive show that the commutation current ripple can be significantly reduced by the presented PWM technique.","PeriodicalId":161915,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133942367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Almost always, these entities have their own power converters for processing the intermediate solar energy transferred through the systems. Having individual converters does have some advantages like more flexible individual control and easier design, but it does not provide opportunities for merging functionalities, needed for reducing the overall semiconductor count, and hence a more compact integrated design. Addressing this latter concern, a number of integrated solar energy generation systems using 25% lesser semiconductor is proposed here for either single-phase or three-phase realization. The proposed systems allow various combinations of solar sources, energy storages and local loads to be compactly assembled for either grid-tied or standalone usage, and through proper control, the overall systems can still deliver the same levels of performances as their traditional correspondences. For verifying the practicality of the proposed integrated systems, simulation is first performed.","PeriodicalId":161915,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131733640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their parasitic inductances, capacitances, and resistances are difficult to model due to the complex winding arrangement along with their nonlinear and multivariate nature. This paper provides a methodology for determining parametric models for the leakage inductance, inter and intra-winding capacitances, and resistance of planar transformers using a variety of winding arrangements. A Central Composite Design based on the Design of Experiment (DoE) methodology is employed to provide the parametric models using a small number of experimental runs. Results from physical experimentation on a planar ER18/3.2/10 core set are provided and show excellent correlation between modeled results and confirmation testing. The methodology can be employed to characterize and design planar transformers for specific applications (for example soft switching or resonant converters), and to predict their performance as part of different power electronics topologies.","PeriodicalId":161915,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131807448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
