A higher education level of the parents is generally associated with having a more positive influence on their children’s health habits and motivation to maintain healthy dentition. From this perspective, the aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency of certain habits influencing dental health, such as toothbrushing, regular visits to the dentist, and changing toothbrushes, in a group of Turkish secondary school children, and to explore its relation to the education level of their mothers and fathers. Material and Methods: The study consisted of the use of a questionnaire designed to collect demographic information, oral health behavior of the children, and the parents’ education level. Demographic characteristics and oral health behavior of the children were asked of the children in a face-to-face interview by one investigator. Only the parents’ education level was asked of the children’s parents. Results: The mean age of the 444 children was 11.66 ± 0.98. According to chi-square testing applied, there was a statistically significant correlation between the parents’ education level and their children’s dental visit frequency (p< 0.05), whereas there was no statistically significant link between the parents’ education level and the frequency of the children’s toothbrushing and replacing their toothbrushes (p> 0.05). Conclusions: Irrespective of the education level of their parents, positive oral health attitudes and behavior were not observed in Turkish secondary school children.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126968547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: Five different fluoride releasing restorative materials [Riva Self Cure (SDI, Australia), Riva Light Cure (SDI, Australia), Riva Silver (SDI, Australia), Dyract® XP (DENTSPLY, Germany) and Beautifil II (SHOFU, Japan)] and one composite resin material (Grandio, VOCO, Germany) were selected for this study. A total of 48 specimens (8 of each) were prepared using Teflon molds (4.0 mm-diameter and 2.0 mm-thickness). The antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of the mentioned restorative materials on Streptococcus mutans were evaluated. The data obtained were evaluated by One-Way analysis and Tukey’s Test (p<0.05). Results: As a result, no correlation was found in terms of antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of the restorative materials evaluated in the study. While the dental plaque (matrix) accumulation was detected at least on the Grandio resin, the materials with the least cell adhesion were Light Cure and Riva Self Cure since it showed antiadhesive properties for S. mutans. Conclusions: Although the highest antibacterial activity against S. mutans was detected in resin-modified glass ionomers, biofilm matrix (dental plaque) accumulation was mostly detected on these material surface in our study.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129491415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the study is to evaluate sweet, salty, sour and bitter taste perceptions of school children and compare them in term of caries experience. Material and Methods: Two hundred children aged from 6-13 were included in the study. The dental examinations of children were performed using DMF(T), DMF(S), df(t) and df(s) indices. Questionnaires were presented to parents to record the socioeconomic and educational levels, oral health knowledge, child’s general health, oral health habits and fluoride exposure. Children rinsed sucrose (12g/L; 24g/L), sodium chloride (2g/L; 4g/L), citric acid (0,6g/L; 1,20g/L) and caffeine (0,27g/L; 0,54g/L) solutions randomly and the taste perception was recorded. Relationship between the taste perception and caries experience were evaluated. Results: A significant correlation was found between 2 g/L of NaCl and age (p= 0,007, r= 0,178). When occlusal or approximal caries of the children aged from 6 to 9 were discriminated, the Spearman’s test found a weak positive correlation between occlusal caries and higher sweet taste (24 g/L sucrose) (r= 0,232; p= 0,021) and a weak negative correlation between approximal caries and higher salty taste (4 g/L NaCl) (r= –0,225; p= 0,025). Conclusions: Age should be considered in the assessment of taste perception of children. Additionally, there is a weak relationship between taste perceptions and dental caries. These data suggest that further studies need to focus on the effect of taste preferences on dental caries.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127546093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: Panoramic radiographs were obtained of 57 skulls among the academic collection at the University of Pittsburgh. Orthodontic wire was inserted through the mandibular canal as a reference point at panoramic images for localization of the course of the mandibular canal. Results: Double mandibular canals were present in 2 out of 57 skulls (3,5%); one of them was unilateral the other one was bilateral. Additionally, bifurcation of the mandibular canal and different types of configurations were assessed. In five of the specimens (8,8%) bifid canals were identified. Among them, one case (1,7%) was identified as a forward type. In one case additional canal (1,7%), was detected in the retromolar region, which joined the main canal. Three of the specimens (5,3%) showed accessory canal types. These were the canals that detached from the main canal and proceeded towards the molar teeth roots (dental type). All of these bifid canal types were unilateral. Conclusions: Our results depicted the anatomical variations of the mandibular canal. Dental practitioners should be aware of this underestimated but not a rare occurrence of mandibular canal variations in order to avoid complication during surgical procedures.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125286516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: The Turkish version of the WHOQOLBREF questionnaire was used to assess the QOL of dental students in their first (n=73), second (n=58), third (n=55), fourth (n=47) and fifth (n=48) years with a mean age of 22,15 ± 1,89 between January and February 2019. The items were organized in four domains (physical and psychological health, social relations and the environment) with most response options on a five-point Likert-type scale. Descriptive statistics were computed and the P-value of <0,05 was set as statistically significant. Results: The sample was composed of 281 students, corresponding to an overall response rate of 90,6%. The overall QOL was rated good by the responding students. The difference between male and female respondents’ answers was not statistically significant. Mean scores were lowest for the psychological domain and were highest for the physical health domain. The psychological domain of the first-year participants was significantly better than that of fourth-year participants. Furthermore, the overall quality of life was highest for first-year students’ compared to all years. Conclusions: Although the overall QOL for students in the present study was generally acceptable, the psychological domain was the lowest in dental students. A positive relationship was observed between students’ satisfaction with health and their QOL. Dental schools should focus on reorganizing the curriculum and provide support for dental students, especially for those in their fourth-year.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"32 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120920114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The condition has no sex or race predilection and its incidence is 1 per 1,000 – 2,500 live births. Individuals affected with Noonan syndrome have distinctive facial features, hypertelorism, short stature, congenital heart disease; mainly pulmonary stenosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, chest deformities, variable learning disabilities and mental retardation. Orofacial findings in Noonan syndrome may be high-arched palate, micrognathia, dental malocclusion and articulation difficulties. Case report: The present article reports on a male case of 12 years old, referred for treatment in the orthodontic office. Despite the difficulties of hyperactivity, the light mental delay and the gag reflex, the treatment was completed satisfactorily with fixed orthodontic appliances in 15 months. Both the patient and his parents were happy with the results. The patient is presently undergoing the retention period of this orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: Despite the difficulties of treating a child with a genetic syndrome for his/her malocclusion, the reported case presented in this article proves that it is always worth trying for the benefit of the patient.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131083142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MG is an autoimmune, antibody-mediated neuromuscular disorder. It is characterized by fluctuating fatigability and weakness affecting ocular, bulbar and (proximal) limb skeletal muscles. Case report: The case of an edentulous 72-year-old female patient with MG, and in need of removable prostheses was reported. The dental management of a complete denture wearer with MG required special attention and treatment protocols, as described in the present case report. Conclusions: Dental treatment, especially complete denture rehabilitation, of patients diagnosed with MG presents a challenge to the oral health care provider. Clinicians must be aware of the patients’ health status in order to preserve their natural dentition. Implant-supported overdentures must be the treatment of choice in cases of edentulism coupled with MG. In cases where a complete denture is the treatment option, the prosthesis should be placed in the zone of minimum conflict (neutral zone) for optimal neuromuscular coordination.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127194727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: 43 incisor teeth within 15 paraffin block models were exposed at 4 different exposure times both for the CMOS and PSP groups, and a total number of 120 images were obtained. All images were evaluated by 3 dentomaxillofacial radiologists via 3 different criteria; IQS, BI, CW. Results: Diagnostic quality scorings between groups displayed statistically significant difference for 0,1; 0,125 and 0,16 sec exposure times. PSP group revealed higher IQS. For 0,125 and 0,16 seconds exposure times, PSP group showed higher percentages of BI. Average CW were lower in PSP group. Although no statistically significant difference was found between average CW vs. exposure times in the CMOS group; PSP group revealed significant differences among exposure times. We can state that, the PSP system displayed higher image quality so exposure times can be reduced, alas, the same conclusion is not possible with CMOS system used. Conclusions: Image quality perception is higher in PSP system we used, compared with CMOS system. PSP system display more burnout effects with increasing exposure times, while CMOS system is constant.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127970176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of 6 disinfectant solutions (50% vinegar, 100% vinegar, 1% silver nitrate, 2% silver nitrate, %1 sodium hypochlorite, 0,12% chlorhexidine digluconate) in the disinfection of acrylic resin specimens contaminated in vitro by Candida albicans, as measured by residual colony-forming unit (CFU). Material and Methods: 66 pieces of 10mmx2mm acrylic resin disc samples were prepared and incubated in 1x106 cell/ml suspension of C. albicans ATCC 18804 for 24 h (one of them as a control, n=11/group). The specimens were then transferred into tubes containing 10 ml of the tested disinfectants and kept for 10 minutes in the disinfectant. After washing with saline, the specimens were vortexed to remove the microorganisms adhered to the surfaces. Colony counting of the collected microorganisms was performed on Sabouroud dextrose medium using 10−1, 10−2 and 10−3 dilutions. Once antiseptic solutions react with saliva, both fluids undergo significant changes of their biophysical properties, consequently, those changes have an impact on their principal function. Material and Methods: In this study, saliva was collected and mixed with 0,1% chlorhexidine digluconate solution, fluoride mouthwash, zinc-hydroxyapatite solution and CPP-ACP paste. Microfluidic PVC/Green tape chips within the experimental setup were used to simulate solution mixing. The chip had 2 inlets and 1 outlet, and channel was designed in Y shape without any obstacles. The inlet channels were set at a 60° angle. The channel width was 600 µm and the diameter of inlets and outlet was 2 mm. For better visualization, blue food coloring was added to the saliva. The procedure was recorded with digital USB microscope camera and afterwards the percentage of mixing was obtained by MATLAB programming language. Results: Obtained results show incomplete mixing of all the solutions with saliva. The value of mixed liquid, when mixing 0,1% chlorhexidine digluconate solution with saliva was 51,11%. In case of medium concentration fluoride mouthwash, result was 84,37%. Zinc hydroxyapatite solution obtained result of 85,24%, and the fourth tested solution, CPP-ACP paste, 83,89%. Conclusions: Analyzed mouthwashes exhibit specific, non uniform behavior during mixing with saliva. Microfluidic setups could be efficiently used in simulating real clinical conditions in laboratory settings. Image processing mathematical models are applicable, accurate and useful in determination of the interaction of saliva with commonly used antiseptic solutions.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"304 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123553746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
