Material and Methods: CBCT images of 673 patients (322 females and 351 males) were examined retrospectively with regard to age, gender, location of CS and relation to impacted canines. The age of the patients ranged from 14 to 82 years; the mean age of the female patients was 43.54 years and that of the males was 45.75 years. IBM SPSS 22 for Windows was used for statistical analysis of the results. Statistical comparisons between two categorical variables were conducted using chi-square tests. Significance was set at (p< 0.05). Results: It was observed that 8.17% of the patients in this study exhibited accessory canals (AC) of CS (n= 55). There was no significant difference in CS prevalence between ages, age groups, and location in our study (p> 0.5). There was significant difference in CS prevalence between the genders (p< 0.5). Conclusions: It is important to take into consideration the presence of AC of the CS during surgical procedures in the anterior maxilla. It was also found that CBCT is more helpful than other techniques in detecting accessory canals in the region of interest.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126168187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Panoramic radiography is often the first choice method for the implant placements because it gives information on the overall shape of the jaws, the position of the maxillary sinus floor and the nasal cavity floor, and vertical position of the mandibular canal and the mental foramen in relation to dental implants. The specific aim of the present study was to evaluate 10-year survival rate of dental implants by analysis of dental panoramic radiographs. Material and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 507 panoramic radiographs of 156 implant patients. Initial oral health status, proceedings of Restorative/Endodontic treatments before implant placement, missing number of teeth and edentulism types, finalization of implant related prosthetic treatments during controls, implant quality scorings at baseline/ controls and implant fails were analyzed. Results: The study results reveal statistically significant difference between the performed R/E treatment rates, according to the need for R/E treatments (p= 0.008). During the initial radiograph 96.1% of the implants were successful and 3.9% had satisfactory survival. At last control 86% of the implants were successful, 10.3% had satisfactory survival, 1% had impairment in survival and 2.8% were unsuccessful. The change in the last control compared to the initial radiograph is statistically significant (p= 0.000) regarding satisfactory survival. Conclusions: Long-term implant survival is not significantly affected by gender, age, type of edentulism, the presence of periodontal disease, R/E treatment needs, implant location, prosthesis type, and the presence of multiple implants.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131180090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: 120 extracted human teeth were ex vivo endodontically treated and retreatment was performed using three different endodontic systems. Samples were divided into 3 groups, A-retreatment with Hedstroem hand files, B-retreatment with Pro Taper Retreatment files and C-retreatment with Pro Taper Gold files. Apically extruded material was collected in pre-measured Eppendorfs on a laboratory scale (10−5g). The amount of the extruded material was measured after the retreatment. The data were analysed using the the statistical software: STATISTICA 7.1 and SPSS for Windows 20. Results: The statistical analysis of the data revealed significant differences between the three endodontic retreatment systems (P< 0.05). Apical extrusion in the A endodontic system is significantly greater than the rotary (B and C) endodontic systems. Conclusions: In ex vivo conditions the results of this study showed significant statistical difference between three investigated endodontic retreatment systems concerning the amount of apically exuded material. The largest amount of material suppressed periapically was proven for Hedstroem hand instruments.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114975715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: Retrospectively selected images of 57 patients with histopathology results were evaluated by two oral radiologists. The lesions were assessed based on shape, location, borders, relationship with the mandibular canal, presence of destruction of cortical bone, and expansion of cortical bone, and presence of an unerupted tooth related to the lesion. In addition, the widest areas of the lesions were measured. A total of 9 (15.8%) odontogenic keratocysts, 9 (15.8%) apical granulomas, 24 (42.1%) radicular cysts, 12 (21.0%) dentigerous cysts and 3 (5.2%) central giant cell granulomas in 57 patients (20 women, 37 men) with a mean age of 36.93 ± 17.96 years were included. Fifty-seven CBCT and 56 panoramic images of these patients were evaluated. Results: Twenty-nine (50.8%) lesions were in the mandible and 28 (49.2%) in the maxilla. A statistically significant difference was determined for the areas in CBCT images (p=0.007). Conclusions: Panoramic radiography is not as successful as CBCT in demonstrating some characteristics of the lesions, such as expansion and destruction. The area measurements may be beneficial in establishing the differential diagnosis of the lesion.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129774156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aim of this study was to investigate microbial composition of primary infected root canals with apical periodontitis of young permanent teeth, originating form school children in Serbia, and its association with clinical symptoms. Material and Methods: To determine the bacterial composition of infected root canals in children, 35 endodontic samples were obtained. The identification of cultured bacteria was performed by MALDI-TOF MS analysis. The presence or absence of clinical symtoms were recorded. Results: Facultative anaerobes were 2,2 times more frequent than obligate anaerobes. The most common facultative anaerobes belonged to following genera, Streptococcus (58 isolates), Actinomyces (10) and Enterococcus (8), while predominant obligate anaerobes, belonged to genera Veillonella (15), Prevotella (9) and Fusobacterium (8). The most common clinical isolates recovered from infected root canals with symptomatic apical periodontitis were Veillonella parvula (10) and Fusobacterium nucleatum (7), while from the asymptomatic ones, they were Streptococcus mitis/Streptococcus oralis (5). Prevalence of Parvimonas micra, Prevotella buccae and Streptococcus constellatus within the root canals might be associated to clinical symptoms. Conclusions: Species of genera Streptococcus and Veillonella were the most common isolates from primary infected root canals with apical periodontitis in Serbian school children. Facultative anaerobes were predominant over obligate anaerobes. The prevalence of obligate anaerobes was much higher in symptomatic compared to asymptomatic root canal infections. No specific bacterial strain might be associated to a single examined clinical symptom (pain, tenderness to percussion or swelling), but majority of the strains are associated to all of the examined three symptoms.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127080863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since droplet and aerosol transmission are the most important concerns in dental clinics, informing future dentists about pandemic diseases at the undergraduate stage is important. In this context, the aim of this study was to compare the knowledge and attitudes of clinical and preclinical dental students regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods: 159 preclinical and 130 clinical dental students were included in this cross sectional study. The researchers developed a closed-ended questionnaire with the help of the existing literature. The questionnaire contained 17 questions about the knowledge and attitudes of dental students regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Clinical students feel significantly more threatened with exposure to COVID-19 infection than preclinical students (p<0.05, chi-square test). The proportion of students who do not want to treat an individual who has had a COVID-19 infection and recovered is statistically higher in clinical students (p<0.05, chi-square test). The proportion of students who think that using protective equipment during dental practice will not protect them against COVID-19 infection is statistically higher in clinical students (p<0.05, chi-square test). Conclusions: More education and training courses are need in order to improve students’ knowledge and attitudes regarding newly emerging pandemic diseases.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120949474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of in vitro pre-operative radiographs before caries removal in RDT measurement. Material and Methods: This in vitro study was conducted with 30 lower deciduous second molars with deep approximal dentinal caries. Following the standardized digital radiographs were obtained, RDT was measured by determining the closest distance between the carious lesion and the pulp chamber on the computer software. After caries removal, the samples were sectioned in mesio-distal direction and photographed. RDT was measured on photographs similarly to radiographic measurements. In statistical analysis, Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), Wilcoxon-Signed and Bland Altman Plot (BAP) tests were performed to determine the agreement and statistically difference. Results: The mean RDT value in photographs was found to be 10% higher than measured on radiographs. Although, correlation coefficient was within confidence interval, both RDT values showed good but not excellent agreement (correlation coefficient= 0.812). Also, BAP test did not demonstrate strong agreement. In descriptive statistics, significant difference was found between two measurements (p<0.05). Conclusions: Pre-operative radiological examination can not alone provide reliable results regarding the accurate determination depth of caries lesions. Clinicians should also consider operative diagnostic criteria for appropriate treatment options in deciduous teeth.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131127534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The gingival recessions are major esthetic concern in patients at any age. In cases with esthetic and functional considerations mucogingival surgery is indicated. The advantages of CAF with or without CTG are making this procedure highly recommended in the esthetic zone. The results are predictable about root coverage, widening if the gingival tissues and esthetics. The aim of the recent case report is to demonstrate the succesfull combination of coronally advanced flap with connective tissue graft in the treatment of wide and deep gingival recessions. Case Report: Female patient seeking consultation with great concern” not to lose the lower canines”. She noticed elongation of the teeth in the recent years complained with tenderness while brushing them. The initial examination showed presence of multiple gingival recessions in the upper and the lower jaw. Full periodontal status was taken and following diagnosis was established – dental plaque induced gingivitis, class II gingival recession in teeth #33 and #43 (Miller`s classification), RT1 by Cairo. After cause-related therapy two surgical procedures were performed in separate sessions. Both gingival recessions were surgically treated by means of CAF with CTG. Conclusions: Despite the limitating factors such as lack of keratinized tissue in the patient’s mandible that rather difficult the performance of the technique of choise, the coronally advanced flap with connective tissue graft is predictable technique for full root coverage.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114750838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: A 21-item structured questionnaire form was used. Then, patients were evaluated for the presence and types of oral lesions. In the qualitative phase of the study, two focus group interviews were conducted with volunteers among participants of the quantitative part. The quantitative data were first evaluated by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normal distribution. Chi-square test, Mann Whitney U test, t-test and logistic regression were used for statistical evaluation. Qualitative data analysis was manually performed by the content analysis method. Results: This study included 171 subjects. When the participants were classified as lesion and non-lesion groups, cigarette use and duration of prosthesis use were higher in patients with lesions. Denture-related lesions occurred in 46.2% of the participants; prosthetic stomatitis in 23.9% of the denture-related lesions, traumatic ulcer in 12.9%, epulis fissuratum in 9.9%, and angular cheilitis in 5.8%. Of the participants with lesions 72% (n=57) had a single lesion, while 28% (n=22) had multiple lesions. The duration of prosthesis use was longer in patients with lesions (p=0.022). The main themes determined in the qualitative stage were identified as “views on prosthesis use”, “features related to prosthesis care”, “information sources on prosthesis” and “proposals of participants”. Conclusions: Current study shows that denture-related lesions are very common. Patients should be informed in detail and adequately by physicians and specialized nurses in this regard at every stage of treatment. A universal protocol will be very helpful to ensure that patients are provided with all necessary information about wearing dentures, their maintenance and the importance of regular check-ups. Informative meetings should be organized for wider patient groups in which patients may also interactively participate in, and studies to increase oral health literacy should be conducted. The cross-sectional assessment is not enough for risk assessment due to its nature and only declaration based assessment might miss the relations. Follow-up studies combined with qualitative studies with different approaches are needed.","PeriodicalId":161469,"journal":{"name":"Balkan Journal of Dental Medicine","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116136605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
