A constant high switching frequency is obtained using an hybrid digital pulse width modulator (DPWM). The proposed SMC strategy cooperates with an off-chip ADC and the hybrid DPWM takes advantage of a digital clock manager (DCM) and a counter-comparator based DPWM with a Multi-stAage-noise-SHaping (MASH) Σ-Δ modulator. Experimental results verify closed-loop operation at switching frequency up to 4MHz only limited by the discrete SMPS and its dynamic response less than 30µs. Simulation results show that the complete digital controller chip in 0.35µm CMOS process takes 0.72mm2 of silicon area and the current consumption is roughly 100µA/MHz for a dynamic response of 16µs.","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116763879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The monitoring was made with an electric power quality monitor developed at the University of Minho. The studies were performed in different installations: textile industries, a pharmaceutical industry, a hospital and two universities. Therefore, the results showed in this paper were obtained in different electrical installations. It is important to emphasize that, the results here presented are not intended to establish profiles for each type of electrical installation. The aim is rather to show several electric power problems that occur in these types of facilities, and also to present the functionalities of the electric power quality monitor developed at the University of Minho, working out of laboratory, in real electrical installations.","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128027241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Usually, the simulation is performed in the timedomain using classical discrete approaches convenient for both linear and non-linear systems. An other method consists in the quantization on the variable magnitude which is based on discrete events. The discrete event system specification formalism is adapted to simulate any electrical circuit described with a system of ordinary differential equations using the system state quantification. In this paper, a solution to make more efficient the magnitude quantification for a system of linear ordinary differential equations is given. The proposed technique is used to simulate a simple three phase coupled power systems and it is compared to other solutions given by the explicit integration using formal language and the time-domain discretization using fixed-step fifth order Runge-Kutta integration method.","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130764109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The swimsuit will integrate sensors for the measurement of several physiological and biomechanical signals; this paper will focus on ECG and respiratory movement analysis. The data obtained is mainly intended to provide tools for evaluation of high-performance swimmers, although applications can be derived for leisure sports and other situations. A comparison between electrodes based on different materials and structures, behaviour in dry and wet environments, as well as the behaviour in different extension states, will be presented. The influence of movement on the signal quality, both by the muscular electrical signals as well as by the displacement of the electrodes, will be discussed. The final objective is the integration of the electrodes in the swimsuit by knitting them directly in the suit's fabric in a seamless knitting machine.","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134291104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Power density is usually thermally limited and therefore understanding of stator convective heat transfer is crucial in the design of AFPM machines and electrical machines in general. This paper presents direct measurements of radially resolved stator convective heat transfer in a rotor-stator system, using a thin-film electrical heater array to measure heat transfer. The heater array combines surface temperature sensing with heat flux measurement. It is found for the three gap sizes considered here that average Nusselt number (non-dimensional convective heat transfer coefficient) increases from Nu ≈ 100 at low disc speeds/rotational Reynolds numbers (Reθmin = 3.7e4) up to Nu ≈ 300–400 at higher speeds (Reθmax = 5.6e5).","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":" 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132094608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Normally, is used a PLC (programmable logical controller) to control the process and assure that the timing requirements (deadlines) are satisfied and a PC to monitor the data. However, the implementation of such solution presents the following drawbacks to the system programmer: (1) he or she needs to know the communication protocol between the two platforms -PLC and the PC; (2) he or she needs to learn two different programming languages - the low level PLC language and a high level PC language. On the other hand, in some cases, the reserved space to control the systems is reduced, making the implementation of such solution very hard. This paper presents an approach based on an embedded PC with real-time processing capability and data monitoring facility. The proposed system runs the Windows CE operating system and allows all software development in C/C++, using the Microsoft Visual Studio environment. The system was tested on an industrial screw machine for PCBs.","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129451248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In consequence, anticipation becomes a key word for engineers and the conception using computer aided design tools is actually more suitable. That is why, nowadays, efforts are focused on model developments. Unfortunately, modeling methods are limited by the complexity of industrial products. This complexity is due to the geometries with arbitrary shapes and to the nature of associated components (magnetic or not). This paper presents the EMC modeling of static converters with an application to a variable speed drive using integral methods. PEEC, AMLFMM methods and a circuit simulator are combined to compute the differential and common mode sources and finally the emitted field.","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134643151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A separated transformer couples the fixed and mobile parts of the contactless charger with two separate windings. The fixed part is composed of a half-bridge circuit and an LLC resonant tank, and the mobile part is just a diode rectifying and filtering circuit. For the purpose of control, each part has an 8-bit microcontroller, encoding and decoding ICs accompanying infrared transmitter and receiver are used to close the feedback control loop. Overall, the designed charger is fully digitalized and no other analog circuits are required. Therefore, the charging function is programmable. Since the coupling of two separated windings is loose, the ratio of leakage to magnetizing inductance is the key parameter of the contactless transformer. By means of fundamental approximation, the resonant LLC tank is analyzed and a prototype charger is built to demonstrate the designed charging function.","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115400305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The joystick drive system enables handicapped person to drive a car by his/her single hand with seating in an electric wheelchair. The joystick operation in back and force direction controls acceleration or deceleration of a car while that in left and right direction turns a steering wheel. Therefore a person, who has disabilities such as no enough force nor limited movable area of their arms together with disabilities in legs, can drive a car by oneself. Additionally, a wheelchair driver does not have to change seat from a wheelchair to a car seat. Since a developed van equips with a lift on the back, a wheelchair user can access to the driver's position with propelling a wheelchair inside of a van. For maintaining driving safety of a van in case of system fault, gas and brake pedals are physically moved by a mechanical linkage which is connected to a joystick lever. Therefore a van can be stopped by manual operation in any case. A steering wheel is turned by an electric motor which is controlled by a micro-computer system. A steering angle is PID controlled to track the reference angle given by a joystick. To realize the joystick drive system with seating a wheelchair, we design a steering drive mechanism which includes a DC motor, a magnetic clutch, and a potentiometer for steering angle detection, and transmission gears. Most of cars manufactured in these days equip with power steering systems which reduce steering operation power of human drivers. Therefore the system can utilize the power steering system for realizing the joystick car drive system with minimum capacity of a motor. The prototype mechanism is mounted on a car cockpit of a real van and tested the realizability of the proposed joystick controlled car-wheelchair mobile system.","PeriodicalId":160078,"journal":{"name":"2009 35th Annual Conference of IEEE Industrial Electronics","volume":"282 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115665277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
