{"title":"The Cultural and Historical links between Turks and Afghans in the First Era of Islam","authors":"Mir Akbar Shah","doi":"10.37556/al-idah.041.02.0714","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.37556/al-idah.041.02.0714","url":null,"abstract":"Though Turks and Afghans are located far off geographically yet it may not be perceived as a marker of friction between the two nations. The Islamic history in the middle Ages reveal that Islam has spread in the Turkish and Afghan regions amongst the indigenous tribes heralded a marked cultural and linguistic influence in the cited regions.  The Turks' contact with the Islamic world started in the era of four Caliphs and the Umayyad dynasty reaching out to the western regions of the \"Bab\" region adjacent to Turkish territory in 22 AH. This contact resulted in the spread of Islam amongst the Turks and their men took part as part of Muslim army leading to propagation of Islam. Moreover, In the Abbasid era, the number of Turks assuming leadership positions had increased in the Muslim state. This contact sustained in the Islamic world to the East in the Turkish areas after the Muslims crossed the JIHUN River (Amu Darya) in 31 AH under the leadership of QUTAYBA Ibn Muslim. Thus Islam spread among the Turk Tribes under the rule of the SAMANI Governors where they spearheaded the extension of Muslim influence to Tirmiz, Bukhara, Samarkand and other Central Asian countries due to the simplicity of Islam.  As for the Afghans' contact with Islam in the West, it began in the era of four Caliphs and the Umayyads eversince Herat was conquered in the year 23 AH; Jawzjan, Balkh and Takhar in the year 32 AH by Al-Ahnaf bin Qais from northern Afghanistan; Zabul in the year 43 AH and Kabul in 44 AH by Abd al-Rahman bin Samra. However the eastern areas of Afghanistan and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan, although Islam reached there in the first century, did not enter the Islamic rule. They remained either under the tribal control or were ruled by the Indian kings until the Ghaznavids took over through Prince Subuktagin in Ghazni in the last decade of the 4th century.There has remained direct contact between the Turks and Afghans after the displacement of the Turkish tribes to the Gazani state in the south of the Jihun River.The state sovereignty of the Turkish majority was due to their leadership positions and a large part of the military formation included the Turks and Afghans. Hence the two nations lived with a clear linguistic and cultural influence with hundreds of basic words in common as for instance the Turkish names for Afghan men and women and dozens of Turkish names for villages and cities. There are even common tribal traditions and customs between the two peoples. Shaikh Sultan Aziz is one of the famous Pashtun scholars who lived in the 20th century in Afghanistan. \u0000There are several research papers that have discussed the efforts of Pashtun scholars in the interpretation of the Quran. This research paper discusses the worthy contributions of one of the great commentators of the Quran Shaykh Sultan Aziz called “Aziz al-Tafsir”. It encompasses a detailed biography of the writer and his worthy contribution to serving the Quran. \u0000Aziz al-Tafasir is the main exegesis of the Holy Qur'an in the Pashto language and consists of 13 volumes. This analytical study of interpretation focuses on deriving the true spirit of the message of Islam. \u0000In this brief article, I discuss the definition of the interpretation of Sheikh Sultan Aziz, who is considered one of the most important references for interpretation in Afghanistan in the present era. He spent a lifetime in the cause of jihad, in raising generations, and in reforming Afghan society. \u0000What prompted me to choose this topic is that this interpretation is one of the largest, if not the largest, written interpretations in the Pashto language, and that its author is one of the scholars and preachers who are referred to as Lebanon in the Afghan states, which makes this interpretation worth researching and extracting its treasures. \u0000In this article, Allah Almighty willing, we will get to know this interpretation briefly and usefully, with an introduction to the obscure interpreter, and a brief overview of its approach and the most important advantages and disadvantages of this great interpretation. \u0000The research problem lies in the following questions: \u0000What is the extent of care of the Pashtuns in the interpretation of the Holy Quran? Who is Sheikh Sultan Aziz? And what is his interpretation marked (Aziz al-Tafseer)? What is the status of this interpretation among other interpretations? What are the most important aspects of his approach to this interpretation? The covenant is a distinct constitution through the prism of the Quran and Sunnah. In the light of this constitution not only Ansar and Muhajirin but Jews and other minorities can also live in Madinah. The Charter of Madinah carries all the fundamental features that an ideal constitution should have. According to the treaty, Madinah was considered the 1st Islamic estate and accepted by all the tribes of Jews and minorities in the premises of Madinah. In the constitution, the rights of Muslims were mentioned, and all minorities will be protected, and all participating parties in this treaty were required to take care of the rights of each other and pay their obligations. Some historians reported that the Magna Carta was the first international treaty or constitution. It was assigned in 1215 during the era of King John-I of England. In this article, a comparative analysis has been made between both Constitutions. Also, Imam Al- Tabarani has passed comments which are regarded as \"Elal al-Hadith\" that when a narrator individually narrated the hadith from his teacher so, it is considered weak in the chain of transmission of hadith. Likewise a unique narration of an unreliable narrator is rejected among the scholars of hadith. It is called in hadith sciences ‘the appendage’ (Mutaba'a). A critical study of five hundred hadiths of the book of Al- Tabarani shows that many comments of Al- Tabarani are self-contradictory and hence dismissed. We cannot identify the status of many narrations without examining Al-Tafarrud found in them, and whether this it is acceptable by Hadith Scholars or not. \u0000Al-Taffarud is not totally accepted or neglected. The status of these kinds of narrations is based upon the context, circumstances and factual evidences.
