The work presented in this paper utilizes the inherent reactive power capability of the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind farms to optimize the system losses while considering the network constraints in the system. The IEEE-30 bus system was modified by installing DFIG based wind farms in the medium voltage (MV) region creating three wind clusters in the network. The steady-state analysis was conducted to illustrate the loss minimization capability of the DFIG based wind farms under different reactive power configurations. Reactive power participation for loss minimization was derived for each individual DFIG based wind farm to limit the control burden for the system operator and has shown the loss minimization performance for a range of wind farm control scenarios. The impact of dynamic line rating (DLR) was also investigated in the steady-state analysis and has shown that such capability can further enhance the loss reduction ability of the distributed VAr resources, in particular during high wind penetrations when transmission lines are heavily congested. The dynamic network analysis was carried out considering the Northern Ireland demand and wind power generation profiles with uniform and non-uniform wind conditions for three wind clusters defined in an IEEE-30 bus system. The dynamic network study has also shown that significant energy savings can be achieved by optimized reactive power dispatch of distributed VAr resources.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122210787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microgrid consists of parallel connection of two electronically-coupled distributed generation (DG) units. The DG units are connected to a point of common coupling (PCC) where a passive load is also connected. In the islanded microgrid, a master DG fulfills voltage and frequency control of the load, and a slave DG utilizes the conventional dq-current control strategy to regulate its power components. It is shown that the parallel connection of two DG units in the islanded mode constitutes an interconnected composite system consisting of two subsystems. Moreover, it is shown that the overall islanded microgrid can be controlled by local controllers, i.e., there is a solution to the robust decentralized servomechanism problem for the composite system. Performance of the proposed control strategy is verified using MATLAB/SimPowerSystems Toolbox.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117094159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of past blackouts studied by the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) shows that protection relays are involved in about 75% of all major disturbances. Protection security assessment can be investigated under two different aspects: on the one hand the behavior regarding selectivity, speed and sensitivity and on the other hand the behavior regarding the response on dynamic network phenomena as voltage stability and transient stability. This paper is focused on the protection response on dynamic network phenomena and presents innovative strategies for this investigation aspect. Applicable protection models and the simulation environment based on PSS®NETOMAC will be described. Case studies on real networks show the way of investigation and the achieved improvement of dynamic protection security based on the applied innovative strategies.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117322405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In northwest region of China, the planned capacity of onshore wind farms has reached over 20GW in total. However, the locations of those wind farms are very remote and far away from load centers, and their distance to load centers are beyond 1000km. Therefore, it's of primary importance to address the issues concerned with bulk wind power transmission over long distance. This paper is aimed at development and application of using the line-commutated converter based multi-terminal HVDC (LCC-MTDC) technology for grid integration of large remote onshore wind farms located at Northwest China region. The studies have firstly focused on the design of LCC-MTDC system configuration and its parameters, taking into consideration the practical operation requirements for wind farm grid integration. The control strategy for the LCC-MTDC operation is then proposed, and the comparison in control strategy with and without coordinated operation is also carried out and verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation. Various operation scenarios such as ac fault on rectifier and inverter sides are simulated to investigate the system performance during disturbances. Results show that the proposed LCC-MTDC configuration and its control strategy are effective and the LCC-MTDC system is well controlled over the whole operating range.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128788446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These exchanges take place repeatedly as updates are made to network models to reflect changes in the real systems. Users of network analysis also rely on schematic or pseudo-geographic presentations, which also change as the network models change. Recently, IEC TC57 WG13 has developed a companion standard to CIM model exchange that allows utilities to exchange these schematic layouts as well. The standard makes a distinction between the complete specification of a graphic display and the ‘layout’ of the display that is covered by the standard. This is an important distinction and this paper discusses some of the key use cases for which the new display layout exchange was designed.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129007499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
