The proposed approach that is based on load flow, begins with meshed networks by closing all tie switches. Branch currents were used as switching index to determine the open/closed states of the tie and sectionalizing switches with an objective of system losses reduction. The radial configuration was restored by opening the switch with smallest switching index in each loop. The proposed method has been tested on one balanced and two unbalanced systems with and without distributed generation, and compared with those reported in the literature.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"232 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133292820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People living close to these substations have expressed concern about the external electromagnetic field (EMF) generated from these substations. Salt River Project (SRP) utilizes EMF WorkStation, a simulation software package developed by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to evaluate the EMF level for existing and future substations. The objective of this study is to measure and map the EMF field inside a selected SRP urban substation, compare field measurement with simulation results, and then provide an independent and impartial evaluation of the EMF WorkStation software. The comparison results show that EMF WorkStation is able to provide acceptable estimation of the EMF generated by the substation.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133307263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The flexibility of the blades bending and the drive train are considered to analyze its transient stability under a three-phase fault. The simulations show that the fifth order lumped-mass model provides too optimistic estimation while the ninth order three-mass model can observe the motion of shaft system, which is more suitable for transient stability analysis. When a WTG is perturbed, a large torque may be produced in the drive train which may result in torsional oscillations between different parts of the WTG shaft system, and thereby reduce the fatigue life of the shaft due to bearing the large torque repeatedly.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132139647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By eliminating the mutual flux linkage in the transformer loop equation and adopting the trapezoid principle, the GLI is calculated in the real time. According to the difference between the GLI and the leakage inductance obtained from transformer manufacturer, the criterion to identify the internal fault is developed. A total of 162 experimental cases have been tested and the proposed method is able to reliably and accurately discriminate internal faults from inrush currents with easy implementation. Also, the method is suitable if it is not possible to measure the currents in the delta winding. Furthermore, the method is independent of the B-H curve and iron losses.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133154413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The energy source of the system is a Fuel Cell (FC), for which a mathematical model describing its electrical characteristics is also presented. By controlling the duty cycle of the converter, the input power of the motor is also controlled; thus controlling the speed of the motor. Depending on the operating characteristics of the FC used, the motor may or may not be controlled due to the restrictions imposed on the duty cycle. The range of existence of the duty cycle is derived based on the analysis of impedances of the system. A state observer is designed for sensorless current estimation. Simulations are made using the system's dynamic equations to demonstrate the obtained results.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131669067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Temperature-dependent models are developed and used in simulation to study these impacts. In order to capture the non-uniformity of line parameters caused by ambient temperature gradients, these models are characterized by multiple lumped segments which are non-uniform in length and parameter values. A case study for a medium-length line and several ambient temperature scenarios is presented and underlines the sensitivity of the line performance on temperature gradients.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131695735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Will we have enough power and energy engineers in the future to maintain reliability of the grid? Will we have enough power and energy engineers to improve energy efficiency, design new smart grid technologies, integrate renewable energy sources and sieze the opportunity to electrify transportation? The key to the workforce problem lies in K-12 education, where too few students are exposed to the exciting world of engineering. This paper presents proven K-12 engineering resources that were developed by a multidisciplinary team of faculty at Illinois Institute of Technology during a five-year Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) Site project funded by the National Science Foundation. This rationale for merchant transmission is potentially feasible for transmission lines that are needed mainly for transferring energy from inexpensive sources to expensive sinks. However, maintaining Operating Reliability is also an important function of transmission. In an AC meshed network, a single transmission line may play an essential role for maintaining the reliability of supply as well as for transferring power. Since reliability is essentially a public good, transmission owners will tend to under-invest in the transmission lines needed for reliability purposes. The objective of this paper is to present an analytical framework for determining the economic value of individual transmission lines, and in particular, to determine how these economic values change when an inherently intermittent source of generation, such as wind capacity, is added to a network.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115225208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
