Each current controlled VSC in such a microgrid has its own VP/FQ cross droop controller that sets its current references to regulate the voltage and frequency of a common microgrid bus. By drooping the voltage reference of each controller against its reactive power output, multiple VP/FQ cross droop controllers jointly regulate the microgrid voltage while sharing a common reactive load with one another and with conventional generators in the same microgrid. Similarly, by drooping the frequency reference of each controller against its real power output, multiple VP/FQ cross droop controllers jointly regulate the microgrid frequency while sharing the real load. Simulation results are provided to validate the VP/FQ cross droop control scheme.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130710878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recent Hurricane Gustav landed in west coast in 2008 was one exact case to illuminate the importance and severity of this kind of contingencies. Longtime the researches of islanding situations focus on studying the coherence groups of the generations under an islanding contingency. In this paper, a new method in detecting power system islanding contingencies using both the system's topological structure and real-time system dynamic state variables is presented and tested. An islanding severity index concept is given for ranking the severity of the islanding cases.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130856719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, these power plants are connected to a weak part of the network where severe contingencies could separate them from the main grid. This is a particular concern for coal-fired thermal power plants because of their larger footprints and environmental impact. Coal-fired thermal power plants, which have a relatively slow frequency response, can account for a majority of generation in an islanded system. In order to establish countermeasures for this problem and to maintain stable operation of the islanded system, the authors have developed models of coal-fired thermal power plants for system studies. This paper describes important findings obtained from analyses using the developed models, such as the necessity of modeling the power plant control system including main steam pressure dynamics which can limit the governor response to bring back frequency.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131078095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a novel method named multi-kernel support vector classifier (MKSVC), to analyze the DGA for fault diagnosis of transformers. Different from the conventional support vector machine (SVM), MKSVC uses a combined kernel formed through a linear combination of several basis kernels. In MKSVC, each basis kernel extracts a specific type of information from the training data, providing a partial description of the data. Given many partial descriptions of the data, a convex optimization is obtained by a linear combination. Thus, the learning problem can be solved by iteratively computing this optimization problem. The MKSVC method is evaluated using 318 fault data in comparison with several commonly used methods. The diagnostic results show that the diagnostic accuracy of MKSVC prevail those of the commonly used methods.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132828253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microgrid has been developed in the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), Barcelona, Spain and applied to the ”Smart City” project (led by the utility Endesa) which will be implemented in the near future in Màlaga, Spain. The microgrid is composed of different nodes configurable as renewable or conventional generators, energy storage systems or controllable or non-controllable loads. These different configurations are emulated by a power converter which can be parameterized to behave as any given generation, storage or load node. The emulators are connected to voltage sourced converters (VSC) which are connected to the microgrid. The VSCs have been designed in the framework of the project and feature independent control of active and reactive power. Active and reactive power references are provided by a higher lever energy management system which is based on i-Nodes and i-Sockets. The i-Nodes manage the microgrid and communicate with i-Sockets using IEC61850. i-Sockets control individual nodes of the microgrid and communicate with VSCs by means of CAN. The microgrid can be controlled using centralized or distributed control.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132834470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The course work is arranged in four-week modules that are often delivered by industry based lecturers. Assessment is primarily through industry based case study assignments.
