The value of such communication systems is determined by the network services which are offered. Intelligent Network services, Video-On-Demand (VOD), Interactive TV or Multi media telecommunication services are some examples. Most of these services suffer from a very important disadvantage: They are mass services that do not take the specific needs of the individual end user into account. This will be a major obstacle to a wide-spread acceptance of these services and hence of the future communication systems. In order to improve this situation, we introduce the concept of Personalized Seyvices, which we define as services that are tailored to each end user's needs and interests. Service management that can at least partly done by end users increases the usability and the acceptance of services significantly. We developed a Service Management Model that covers the management processes such as service creation, service subscription, service customization, and service utilization. Input and output data, the role of the person requesting the management process, the possible access devices, and the software for the execution of the process are taken into account in the model. We explain our Service Management Model in detail and give several examples to show its general applicability. We demonstrate the benefits and the added value on our way to Personalized Services.","PeriodicalId":156912,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Intelligent Network","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125164911","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a new service may interact with existing services in some undesirable ways. To face this problem, various approaches have been considered. The aim of this presentation is to give an overview of these approaches that pertain either to the Service Creation Environment or to the Service Execution Environment, and, by discussing the complementarity of the SCE and the SEE approaches, to propose the use of an Interaction Management System that acts in these two environments to detect and resolve interactions.","PeriodicalId":156912,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Intelligent Network","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123748428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It facilitates the distribution of intelligence that allows rapid development and deployment of new services by service providers. Just as important, IN reduces the time between conception of a service and its introduction. Several major development phases exist in IN service life cycle. From the teleoperators point of view, more powerful methods and tools are needed for service prototyping, service creation and service management. This paper introduces an environment for design, implementation and testing of distributed applications called OVOPS. In the paper we suggest how the classes of the OVOPS library can be used in the IN application areas of service creation, service logic and service management.","PeriodicalId":156912,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Intelligent Network","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129874527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the increasing interconnectivity of these networks and the decreasing price of hardware and software, multimedia applications will reach the office and home environment soon. For these applications, audio/video exchange will be necessary between users that are geographically distributed. Moreover, as these applications will have to operate in a multi-vendor environment, they are expected to support features like interoperability and fast introduction of new or upgraded applications. Audio/video exchange between users is an important feature in the design of distributed multimedia services. Both Tina Consortium (TINA-C) and the Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) need to support it. The goal of this presentation is to show how RM-ODP can be used to specify audio/video exchange between users in a distributed environment. A specification if multiparty audio/video exchange is provided that is based on the ODP notion of stream binding. The followed approach can serve as feedback to the developers of RM-ODP and to the TINA-C group that are specializing for the Telecommunication area. This presentation is organised as follows. First, the scope of the presentations is given. Section 2 presents a short overview of ODP and TINA. The relation between ODP and Multimedia is presented in section 3. Section 4 describes an example how the 5 ODP viewpoints can be applied to a multiparty audio/video service. Finally we evaluate the ODP languages from the experience obtained in applying RM-ODP to the stream binding concept.","PeriodicalId":156912,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Intelligent Network","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131964788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, such infrastructure is subject to technological evolution, and one may consider taking benefit of new network facilities in order to implement a new service (e.g. ATM broadband network features, interactive TV). Hence whenever a new service or feature is introduced, the question arises again: does that new service or service feature have to be either implemented by means of an IN architecture, or introduced as an improvement of the underlying network and/or switch-based capabilities? In Some criteria, related to functions available in an Intelligent Network architecture, can be found to help answer such a question from the service designer point of view. - Does the service need triggering points during the Call Processing (trigger function within SSF)? - Does the service need sophisticated switching functions that require SSF be commanded by SCF? - Does the service present a complex logic that justifies externalisation in the SCF? - Do the service data, whether due to their complexity or for consistency purposes, need to be structured in database as permitted by the SDF? - Does the service execution need external resources (access to other networks, specialised device ... ) as permitted by the SRF? - Does the service present special interworking requirements regarding a set of homogenous and consistent integrated services? The consequences of answering these questions are not so trivial: in fact, it helps to draw the border between what is considered as a service feature (a so-called value-added feature of the network) which is to be, sooner or later, independent from the network infrastructure, and what is considered as a core characteristic of the underlying network itself (so-callcd the transport network) which must be incorporated to the network infrastructure, hence evolving together with such infrastructure. Such a border can be used to delimit the network operator's domain and the service provider's domain.","PeriodicalId":156912,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Intelligent Network","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134303432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These changes involve the increased use of software controlled network elements, a desire to share data and distribute application processing among network elements, the need for standard interfaces between network elements, and user demands for more sophisticated telecommunications services and rapid delivery of services. This evolution is particularly evident in the introduction of Intelligent Network (IN) capabilities by network providers throughout the world, including parts of Australia, Europe, Japan, and North America. Given this flurry of IN activity worldwide and the needs for IN standardization and evolution, the telecommunications industry has responded in ITU-T (formerly CCITT) with a program of work that addresses global international IN standards and a framework for the standardized evolution of IN. This presentation provides a description of the relationship between ITU-T IN Recommendations and Bellcore's IN work, referred to as the Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN). These activities are discussed in terms of goals and objectives, target services and supported capabilities, methodology used, specified architectures and interfaces, and potential evolution.","PeriodicalId":156912,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Intelligent Network","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125818693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
