Abstract

Telecommunications networks are evolving globally to keep pace with rapid technological, regulatory and market changes. These changes involve the increased use of software controlled network elements, a desire to share data and distribute application processing among network elements, the need for standard interfaces between network elements, and user demands for more sophisticated telecommunications services and rapid delivery of services. This evolution is particularly evident in the introduction of Intelligent Network (IN) capabilities by network providers throughout the world, including parts of Australia, Europe, Japan, and North America. Given this flurry of IN activity worldwide and the needs for IN standardization and evolution, the telecommunications industry has responded in ITU-T (formerly CCITT) with a program of work that addresses global international IN standards and a framework for the standardized evolution of IN. This presentation provides a description of the relationship between ITU-T IN Recommendations and Bellcore's IN work, referred to as the Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN). These activities are discussed in terms of goals and objectives, target services and supported capabilities, methodology used, specified architectures and interfaces, and potential evolution.
