This brief examines what we know about obesity and falls injuries as applied to the older adult, a topic that is arguably of high import, but not always stressed in the obesity literature. Using the PUBMED and GOOGLE SCHOLAR data bases relevant data on this topic were sought. These data bases show that it is possible some older adults who exhibit excess body mass indicators may be prone to falling and sustaining injuries that may reinforce their tendency towards debility or increase this. Even if not applicable to all older adults, advocating for optimal body weight, and regular physical activity bouts across the lifespan may prove helpful in abating the disability observed due to the presence of an obesity state plus any associated single or multiple injurious falls in later life.","PeriodicalId":156722,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Obesity, Weight Management & Control ","volume":"99 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140478577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Type of descriptive research with a non-experimental cross-sectional research design. 107 students from Catamarca (Argentina) participated, 67 men (62.6%) and 40 women (37.4%) between 21 and 40 years old. Body weight (self-reported and real) will be reduced, to estimate the BMI the formula will be improved: models weight (kg) / height (m2) and to determine the perception by figures, the 7 anatomical sheet of Montero will be taken. The real BMI of 24.59 kg/m2 was established, self-reported BMI of 24.25 kg/m2 and a perceived BMI by figure of 24.06 kg/m2, 88.8% of the students are of normal weight. . The results determined significant differences of p<.001 in all the study variables between men and women. In the sample in general, significant differences were found between the real and self-informed height (p<.001) and between the real BMI with self-reported and with that perceived by figures (p<.05). The men turned out to be more effective in the perception of the figure and the women in the self-report with respect to the real BMI. Positive and significant correlations are presented between the real and self-perceived measurements in each of the variables, highlighting the real BMI with the self-reported BMI (r =915) and with the BMI perceived by figures (r =629) with significance. (p< .001). It is concluded that the BMI established by the techniques of self-report and perception by figures, underestimate the BMI measured by anthropometry, being the self-report technique the most effective of them, obtaining a high connection with the real BMI and with a high predictive value of estimation of the same.","PeriodicalId":156722,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Obesity, Weight Management & Control ","volume":"421 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121823887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These nutritional factors are likely contributors to the growing trend of an increased prevalence of obesity and its pathophysiologic sequelae and culminating in decreased potential for attaining our optimal longevity. In some relatively remote cultures, however, where local populations consume predominately local foods high in nutritional content, in line with their actual caloric and nutritional requirements for a healthy lifestyle, many often survive to or beyond their 100th birthday and thus represent some of the greatest examples of longevity on the planet. The metabolic and pathophysiologic benefits of voluntary appetite control and satiety suppression in concert with a healthy lifestyle likely result in a greater individual potential to attain the optimal longevity conferred by our ancestral rights and origins.","PeriodicalId":156722,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Obesity, Weight Management & Control ","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126765662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High drug costs, increased hospitalizations, increased numbers of doctor visits, lost productivity, and premature deaths are associated with patients with these NCDs. DM and hypertension are diseases that must be treated correctly in order to avoid complications and loss of quality of life. Objective: To evaluate the effects of health education on the lifestyle and health conditions of people with diabetes mellitus and/or hypertension treated in primary care. Methodology: This is a longitudinal epidemiological study, with a quantitative, exploratory nature. The population will be composed of users of Primary Health Care with diabetes and/or hypertension. The sample will consist of patients registered and monitored by the ESF health teams of a neighborhood of the city of Montes Claros - MG. As an instrument of data collection where will be used a questionnaire for socioeconomic evaluation, demographic and clinical aspects, food consumption, evaluation of physical activity level, evaluation of anthropometric measures and evaluation of self-care behavior. The students and the professor will invite health professionals to give the lectures. The research project will be submitted for review to the Ethics Committee on Research involving Human Beings of the Educational Association of Brazil - SOEBRAS, Montes Claros, where it will be subject to prior approval to conduct the study, according to Resolution 466/12.","PeriodicalId":156722,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Obesity, Weight Management & Control ","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130965671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both short terms sympathetically mediated and longer acting thyroidal mediated pathways have been identified and appear to function in a metabolically coordinated fashion to facilitate biochemical and physiologic pathways of energy balance implicating multiple organs and peripheral tissues during periods of over- and under-nutrition. In a congenic lean rodent model known to express parameters of environmentally and diet induced mediated thermogenesis, thyroidal and sympathetic contributions each contributed to approximately 50% of the relative increase in VO2 in quietly resting animals after consuming a high energy palatable diet as determined in the presence vs. absence of α-methylparatyrosine, a sympathoplegic chemical agent. In contrast, in the obese phenotype of the corpulent and other rodent strains, both sympathetic and thyroidal contributions to adaptive thermogenic mechanisms are impaired in response to both nutritional and environmental challenge, contributing to a greater efficiency of energy metabolism and body fat accretion. Thus, the purpose of the present review is to approximate the qualitative distribution between the two primary factors linked to the physiologic process resulting in the expression of diet induced thermogenesis in a normally lean phenotype of rat, the LA/Ntul//-cp.","PeriodicalId":156722,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Obesity, Weight Management & Control ","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126323593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But can more be done to avert the risk of COVID-19 and its observed long term impact in older adults? This mini review strove to examine, summarize and synthesize the research base concerning the key risk factors underpinning later life acquisition of COVID-19 and whether an ancient mind body technique known as Qigong may be one possible largely overlooked strategy for promoting immunity and minimizing the related health correlate of obesity that can both raise the risk for severe COVID-19 infections and delay its recovery among older adult survivors. A second was to provide related intervention directives for health professionals working or who are likely to work with this vulnerable population in the future. Using the PUBMED and other leading electronic data bases and the key words: Qigong, Immunity, COVID-19, Long COVID-19, Obesity, Older Adults, a fair number of articles indicate that the practice of Qigong may be very useful as an adjunctive intervention strategy for raising immunity levels and fostering weight control among older adults, especially those survivors suffering from long COVID syndrome who remain at risk for second infections.","PeriodicalId":156722,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Obesity, Weight Management & Control ","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115658963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
