The substrate of this antenna is made using ceramic-polymer composite. Ceramic-polymer composite with modified ferroelectric powder Ba/sub 0.65/Sr/sub 0.35/TiO/sub 3/ and appropriate polymer have been synthesized and investigated. A time-domain method for microwave measurements of ceramic-polymer material parameters has been developed. The feasibility of dielectric scanning (changing the direction of the beam by varying the relative permittivity of the electrically controlled ceramic-polymer composite) is investigated. It shows that the beam angle changes are over 30/spl deg/.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. Two types of waveguides, the rectangular waveguide and parallel plate waveguide, were modeled by neurocomputacional technique. The first waveguide uses the UC-EBG structure that consists of a metal pad and four connecting branches. This device is employed in the development of high-performance and compact circuit components for microwave and millimeter-wave frequencies. The second waveguide is formed between microstrip ground plane and metal plate with EBG elements on the top that works like one metal shield. This structure has capability of suppressing the propagation of unwanted parallel plate modes. The main objective of this work is the use of a novel ANN paradigm in modeling EBG structures. The proposed neural network model for microwave waveguides on EBG structures gave results in excellent agreement with measured results available in the literature. Besides, this technique is able to generalize for new valuables of input parameters and frequency ranges.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. The [L] matrix calculations are performed with the potential vector given in an integral form, taking into account the current density distribution on the conductors. The Partial Element Equivalent Circuit method (PEEC) is used for this calculation. Analytical formulas easy to use in CAD are derived from the numerical results using a least square method. The formulas have been shown a very good agreement, with a precision in the order of 4%, with simulation results and with experimental results obtained on test boards in the frequency range 1 - 30 GHz.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. The propagation over a smooth spherical earth is the mathematical model used for discussing the transition from light to shadow or, in other words, between interference and diffraction zones. The breakpoint between these two zones corresponds to the well-known criterion of a path clearance equal to 0.6 of the first Fresnel zone radius. It is shown here that this criterion can be related to the relative position of the penumbra width associated to each terminal.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003. Some changes in the classical technique were implemented: a set of antennas known as an array was built and calibrated, and a processing algorithm of the measured signal was tested. The chosen antenna array is circular with 8 elements. Measured data were taken in a small indoor environment in the campus facility. Results accomplishing for the main propagation mechanisms in the tested scenario are reported, and the technique performance is presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":156662,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2003 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference - IMOC 2003.
