The author assumed that there have been no ships totally lost as a result of a collision with automatic radar plotting assist (ARPA) equipment aboard, because he does not know of any. It is known that approximately 80000 ship years of experience with ARPA equipment have been logged. It is pointed out that, if even one ship were totally lost since 1980, the improvement would be a factor of 49:1 in comparison to the previous decade. This improvement becomes 21:1 with a 90% confidence level. Some of the data obtained are based on discussions between ship owners and equipment manufacturers, not information reported formally through official channels. Based upon this information, the improvement factor could be as high as 150:1 in comparison to 1980. The improvement becomes 95:1 with a 90% confidence level.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. Error sources associated with short-term random noise and long-term bias stability have been identified and properly controlled. Current research activities are focused on improving both the dynamic range and the scale factor performance for inertial navigation applications. For low- and medium-performance requirements, IFOG technology is close to the production stage. Cost and packing issues are being addressed to bring the IFOG from a laboratory instrument to a product. Progress on an attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) open-loop IFOG and an inertial-grade, closed-loop IFOG is presented, and the prospects and applications of these newly emerging technologies are discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. Lange","doi":"10.1109/PLANS.1990.66170","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/PLANS.1990.66170","url":null,"abstract":"It is noted that a large hybrid position location or navigation system would contain far too many state parameters if all its calibration drifts were to be optimally estimated, because the Kalman recursion formulae would require an inversion of an excessively large matrix. This problem has been overcome by using an analytical sparse-matrix inversion method. The new statistical technique is a combination of Kalman filtering and an optimum calibration algorithm. The initialization of the Kalman calibration filtering was implemented on the Cray XMP-48 supercomputer system of the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in Reading, UK. Radiance measurements from the polar-orbiting NOAA satellites and weather reports from the worldwide radiosonde network were used for limited experimentation with encouraging results.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. This technique makes more complete use of the information content of the stored elevation data, the a priori knowledge of the errors in the stored elevation data, and the elevation measurements. Simulation results are presented which show that this technique provides a significant performance improvement relative to both a mean absolute difference batch algorithm and an extended Kalman filter recursive algorithm. In addition, this algorithm has been flight tested in a 1750A embedded processor to demonstrate the throughput compatibility.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. It is suggested that the mode S radar has the potential of closing the system loop to allow all parties to have the information needed at the time needed. Most of the required elements are already becoming a part of the system design. The missing link to the system design lies within the data link cockpit interface. It is shown that a smart data link can be achieved, based on the MOPS for the airborne system, by adding data storage and an interface to the aircraft's own systems to it.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. The tests were carried out with a DO 128 research aircraft over the North Sea and also over test areas in Northern West Germany. Precise differential positioning of the aircraft was performed using two different GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver types simultaneously. A Sercel TR5SB C/A-code receiver and a T14100 P-code receiver were installed in the aircraft, while a third and fourth receiver of the same types were tracking satellites on the ground. The system onboard consisted further of a ring laser gyro strapdown system allowing precise position and attitude determination by interpolation between GPS updates. For the purpose of airborne gravimetry the system was equipped with a Bodenseewerk KSS 31 gravity meter. The determination of high-frequency height variations was possible using a precise laser altimeter. A quick-look analysis of the data and velocity determination in the centimeter-range using GPS is presented.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. One of these concepts outlines an advanced driver information system (ADIS) as envisioned for the year 2005. The ADIS core and enhanced function, in-vehicle and infrastructure equipment, concept evolution, standards, regulatory issues, and R&D needs as identified are reported. One critical element in developing an integrated ADIS system is the definition of the communication system that exchanges information between the vehicle and the outside world. Further considerations in the selection of such a communication system are discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. It is noted that MLS has the potential to address capacity in many areas, including parallel runways, converging runways, conflicting approaches, incompatible aircraft mix, wake vortex avoidance, curved approaches, and reduced siting restrictions. It is concluded that since the basic technology of MLS has been demonstrated, efforts should focus on the development approaches that will improve its operational feasibility. Fixed-course-MLS is one such approach that will reduce the burden on controllers of coordinating curved approaches and simplify airborne equipment.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. They also discuss future trends in avionics into the next century along with how modular avionics will affect the way equipment developers interact. Current modular avionic concepts, as embodied in advanced avionics systems, are reviewed. Initially mandated because of the perceived cost advantages, modular avionics also provide significant performance potential. A key characteristic of modular avionics is the partitioning of the system into highly integrated, common and modular building blocks. The partitioning features are defined, and the rationale for the approach taken is presented. The Hughes modular processor family of imbedded avionics processors has been shown to be a powerful and innovative realization of the application of modular avionics concepts to the core avionics.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation. Evaluation of GPS receiver ranging accuracy GPS接收机测距精度评估

A capability has been developed within the CEA to evaluate the accuracy with which the GPS UE makes pseudorange measurement. CEA users are able to isolate and to examine receiver code tracking loop performance independently of GPS navigation performance. Pseudorange measurements consist of the true line-of-sight range and a number of error sources which include: tracking errors, satellite clock error, atmospheric delays, receiver clock error, and receiver channel delays. A range accuracy assessment process has been developed to isolate the tracking error from the other sources of error and the true line-of-sight range. Since the CEA provides a controllable test environment, some of the error sources can be zeroed (satellite clock error and ionospheric and tropospheric delay effects) while others can be quantified (receiver clock error and channel delays). The true line-of-sight range can be determined from the CEA trajectory generation function. The result is that the CEA provides for the direct determination of tracking error in UE receiver pseudorange values.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":156436,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Symposium on Position Location and Navigation.
