Chronic infection can lead to lethal consequences. Blood transfusion which is a common cause of Hepatitis B and C infections is still common in resource poor setting where adequate screening of blood might be a challenge. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence and risky health behaviours associated with Hepatitis B and C infections among blood donors in Ogun State. A descriptive retrospective study was carried out on 2044 Blood donors to National Blood Transfusion Service, Ogun State in year 2014 using pro-forma to obtain needed information and data was analyzed using SPSS. Prevalence of Hepatitis B (10.7%) and Hepatitis C (1.1%) was high among blood donors in the state. Age 21-40years (75% and P-value 0.015), Divorce/Separation (0.7% and P-value 0.001) and Yoruba tribe (85.2% and P-value 0.000) are significantly associated with Hepatitis B infection among blood donors. Age >40years (13.3% and P-value 0.007), Divorce/Separation (0.7% and P-value 0.039) and Yoruba tribe (85.2% and P-value 0.001) are significantly associated with Hepatitis C infection among blood donors. Risky health behaviours among blood donors include tattooing, occupational needle injury, untreated sexually transmitted diseases and multiple sexual partners. The study recommends education of the population on risk factors and effect of Viral Hepatitis.","PeriodicalId":15586,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Clinical Research","volume":"28 1","pages":"26-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83752805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because the strategy of performing the literature search, study selection, and synthesis of the results to report the findings follow defined principles [1, 2]. However, suboptimal or sometimes arbitrary reporting structure and disregarding the existent reporting guidelines (such as CONSORT for randomized trials) is one of the main challenges regarding the performing this kind of studies [3-5]. According to experiences gained from some systematic review studies in the field of dental caries prevention that were not subject to a meta-analysis [6-8], there were some weaknesses in conducting clinical studies making them inappropriate for inclusion in a meta-analysis design (e.g. not providing complete reports regarding the baseline status of dental health, not comprehensively evaluating the related indicators, etc.). Most of the studies on the effectiveness of Fissure sealants and Fluoride therapies are performed with the aim to examine prevention rate and decay levels, respectively. And some of the studies examine the effect of both interventions, reporting dental caries indicators (DMFT, DMFS, dmft and dmfs). Some important findings of these studies indicate lack of assigning control and intervention groups in examining periodic outcomes of interventions in terms of caries indicators [9, 10], not reporting overall caries indicators for all of the study participants [11], and also not reporting sealant retention in different forms (total, partial, or complete loss) [12-15]. In order to make a final decision regarding the outcomes of each aforementioned intervention [16], we need to combine and synthesize results of similar indicators from several studies applying systematic review and meta-analysis designs. Despite the importance of optimal reporting of scientific findings, the reporting of results in some of the studies was incomplete and had weaknesses and challenges including not reporting all of defined indicators, not reporting the baseline status of the indicators, and lack of reporting the indicators within different time periods that have limited their inclusion in secondary studies. To solve this problem, complete and accurate use of the results reporting framework and taking account of follow-up periods, as well as reporting comprehensive indicators of dental caries and types of used materials is recommended. These items, which are developed using relevant experts’ points of view, are provided in tables 1 and 2. It’s expected that by applying this proposed framework, in addition to enhancing the quality of study results, performing meta-analysis studies that is an absolute necessity will be possible. www.jcrg.sciencepub.se","PeriodicalId":15586,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Clinical Research","volume":"2015 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87068947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The application of antiHIV-1 molecules particularly NRTIs have been shown to interfere with telomerase function thereby inducing aging processes. Since the application of these molecules has already indicated production of oxidative stress and toxicity in AIDS patients, their adverse impact on telomerase function may further worsen the situation. In addition, the negative influence of antiHIV-1 regimens on certain host factors involved in telomerase function may enhance aging. HAART changes the landscape of the disease by progressively decreasing the progression of HIV-1, but exerts prolonged adverse effects on the telomerase function. Though there is no exact information available on this issue, intensive efforts are needed to explore regulation of telomerase expression in HIV infected individuals and particularly those receiving antiretrovirals. Most people are unaware of their infection with viral hepatitis and unknowingly transmit the infection to other people, so it is a silent epidemic due to its highly asymptomatic nature. The aim of the study was to assess the Seroprevalence and associated risk factors of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections among blood donors at infectious diseases hospital (IDH) Kano, Nigeria. Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted at the blood bank of Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) Kano, Nigeria from August, 2019 to September, 2019. Data was collected using a pretested structured questionnaire. Descriptive analysis was performed to obtain the frequency distribution of the variables Results: The result shows that 341 participants responded to the questionnaire. 7.3% of the study subjects were positive for HBsAg. 67.4% of the respondents had heard about the hepatitis B virus infection. 66.3%, 57.5% and 58.4% of the respondents in the study reported the presence of fever, loss of appetite and headache as the main symptoms of hepatitis B virus infections. 58.7%, 41.1%, 38.4% and 46.6% of the participants perceived blood transfusion, unprotected sexual intercourse, mother to fetus and use of unsafe needles or sharps as the main mode of transmission of hepatitis B virus infection. Conclusion: Therefore, it is concluded that the Epidemiological Assessment of Seroprevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Hepatitis B Virus Infection Among Blood Donors at Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) Kano, Nigeria is relatively low. Therefore, Health education, routine immunization, effective and periodic screening for HBV is recommended. Furthermore, accurate information on risk factors for HBV transmission should be provided.","PeriodicalId":15586,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Clinical Research","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82218405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
