The current study sought to understand students’ perspectives on using interactive video lectures in fully online classes. Surveys were collected from 161 undergraduate students across two psychology and two family studies and human development online courses. All four courses used online video lectures with embedded questions and pauses to allow time for answering. The survey results report students felt the embedded questions supported their understanding of the content and kept them engaged. Students explicitly reported paying more attention to the videos because there were questions to answer. Students also appreciated the immediate feedback they received, particularly from multiple-choice questions, and felt it helped solidify what they needed to further study. Implications for future practice and research are included.","PeriodicalId":155672,"journal":{"name":"Family Science Review","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115541369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To build these skills in future professionals, the authors developed an infographic assignment to teach students how to research and communicate a current family science topic to a non-academic audience of their choice. The assignment is a semester-long project grounded in experiential, constructivist learning theories. The authors provide students with step-by-step instructions for choosing a topic, writing a thesis statement, conducting background research, choosing how to highlight family research, creating an infographic using free software, and presenting their outcomes to fellow students. The authors include instructions for conducting and implementing the assignment, a sample grading rubric, and an example of student work. Anecdotal and experiential evidence supports the effectiveness of this assignment, although a systematic study is warranted to confirm instructor observations.","PeriodicalId":155672,"journal":{"name":"Family Science Review","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115349704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has also drastically impacted higher education and academic institutions throughout the world. This article analyzes the impact of the pandemic on the higher education industry and its stakeholders; namely, its institutions, faculty and students. Then, a marketing-oriented approach is applied to suggest remedies for some of the key pedagogical issues associated with distance learning that have plagued educators during this period. It is argued that higher education can recover and prosper if educators see this era as an opportunity for positive change. Implications for higher education and family science are discussed.","PeriodicalId":155672,"journal":{"name":"Family Science Review","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132828168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) approach, the current study evaluated use of the Adolescent Media Project (AMP) as a pedagogical approach within an undergraduate adolescent development course. The AMP divided students into smaller groups ( n = 8) in relation to an adolescent themed TV show. Students viewed the first season (or more) of the program throughout the semester. Students analyzed developmental accuracies and inaccuracies depicted in their assigned shows through completing individual written reflections, group meetings, and final individual projects. Implementation of the AMP occurred during the Spring 2020 semester, which allowed for understanding student experiences in transitioning the AMP to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. A longitudinal qualitative approach was implemented with 16 randomly selected students in one course. Three themes emerged: (1) embeddedness, (2) collaboration, and (3) agency. Implications for future implementation of the AMP and active learning during the pandemic are discussed. ____________________________________________________________________________","PeriodicalId":155672,"journal":{"name":"Family Science Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123024326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
