The displacement of trough beams is an important indicator of its normal service limit state. Therefore, this study took the Composite Trough Beam with Corrugated steel web wrapped with Steel plate (CTBCS) as the research object, and explored the theoretical solutions of shear and total displacement of CTBCS and the key factors affecting the displacement. The energy method was used to analyze the shear displacement of CTBCS under different loading modes (the entire CTBCS was subjected to uniform loads, part of CTBCS was subjected to uniform loads and under multiple concentrated loads). Through experimental research, the displacement variation law of CTBCS with symmetric double concentrated loads was analyzed, and the experimental results, theoretical results, and simulated results were compared to prove the accuracy of the theoretical derivation formulas. In addition, the influence of different parameters such as waveform, number and thickness of corrugated steel webs on CTBCS displacement was studied, and measures were proposed to reduce the displacement of composite trough beams. This study can provide useful reference value for the development and application of composite trough beams.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15557,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Constructional Steel Research","volume":"229 ","pages":"Article 109459"},"PeriodicalIF":4.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143642615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result of this curvature, these structures present significant complexities, both in their performance and design, when compared to equivalent straight girders. This fact explains the limitations of current design specifications, which appear to either inadequately address the design of such girders under different loading scenarios or to offer limited and simplified guidance only. AASHTO adopts a simplified and empirical approach, providing some design guidelines for curved steel plate girders. In contrast, the current and upcoming versions of Eurocode 3 for plated structures (EN 1993-1-5) lack specific provisions for curved steel plate girders, especially regarding their response to patch loading, and the adoption of the provisions for straight girders has been shown to provide rather inaccurate and overly conservative predictions. To address this issue, this paper presents a practical procedure for estimating the patch loading resistance of curved steel I-girders. The work is based on a comprehensive finite element investigation on curved steel plate I-girders subjected to patch loading. The new proposal features a novel expression for calculating the buckling coefficient that considers the effect of curvature for a more accurate prediction of the elastic critical load of curved steel I-girders, in addition to a novel resistance function specific to these structures. The new proposal is found to offer a more precise and consistent resistance prediction, by incorporating curvature effects, that the current provisions for straight girders.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15557,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Constructional Steel Research","volume":"229 ","pages":"Article 109469"},"PeriodicalIF":4.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143654768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this, a rational orthogonal array approach was adopted to develop high-performance geopolymer concrete (HPGC) in a previous study. Then, the optimum HPGC mix design was combined with stainless steel tubes, providing significant advantages in harsh marine environments in resisting corrosion and chemical deterioration. Four short columns having a height of 900 mm were tested under different eccentricities to depth ratios (e/D) (0, 0.06, 0.267, and 0.467), and a beam having a length of 1200 mm was also subjected to three-point flexural bending to complete the axial-moment interaction diagram experimentally. Additionally, finite element modelling (FEM) was conducted to simulate the fabricated columns in the experimental program. The results showed an agreement between the numerical and experimental behaviour of the columns. Moreover, the interaction diagram was plotted analytically to assess the capabilities of existing models and accurately predict the results. The experimental findings revealed that the presence of the stainless-steel tubes, which encase the HPGC, improves the ductility of the columns, even though there was a reduction in axial load capacity with increasing the e/D. Local buckling failure was observed at the mid-height of all columns. FEM simulations showed high correlation with experimental outcomes, providing valuable validation for future structural predictions of HPGC-FDST columns.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15557,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Constructional Steel Research","volume":"229 ","pages":"Article 109523"},"PeriodicalIF":4.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143642749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional deflection calculation theories for GBCSWs assume that the CSWs fully resist shear forces, resulting in shear deflection. Meanwhile, the concrete flanges are assumed to bear the entire bending moment, contributing to bending deflections. However, this study demonstrates that these assumptions are insufficient for accurately predicting deflections in tapered configurations. In tapered GBCSWs, the Resal effect induces additional shear forces within the CSWs, resulting in additional shear deflection that significantly affects the total deflection, a phenomenon that is absent in prismatic GBCSWs. Additionally, this study represents the first comprehensive investigation of the Resal effect, revealing its dual influences—both positive and negative—on the deflection behavior of tapered GBCSWs. The positive Resal effect contributes to a decrease in the effective deflection of GBCSWs, whereas the negative Resal effect results in an increase in deflection. Failure to account for the Resal effect and the use of traditional methods for calculating deflections in tapered GBCSWs can lead to considerable inaccuracies. This research not only investigates but also clarifies the mechanisms by which the Resal effect influences the deflection behavior in tapered GBCSWs. Additionally, modified formulas for predicting the deflection of tapered GBCSWs are proposed. The accuracy of the modified method was validated through experiments and numerical simulations.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15557,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Constructional Steel Research","volume":"229 ","pages":"Article 109525"},"PeriodicalIF":4.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143629533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study, for the first time, identifies significant differences between the shear behaviors of prismatic and tapered BGCSWs under eccentric load. Specifically, the Resal effect induces additional shear stresses in the corrugated steel webs (CSWs) due to the bending moments generated by eccentric loads—an effect that is not currently addressed in existing design codes or calculation methods. To this end, a novel theoretical model is proposed for evaluating the shear stress in tapered BGCSWs subjected to eccentric load. This model integrates shear forces, torsional and distortional effects, as well as the additional shear stresses induced by bending moments. Experimental investigations and finite element (FE) simulations validate the proposed model, demonstrating its high computational accuracy. Compared to conventional methods, the proposed approach offers more precise predictions of the shear stress in tapered BGCSWs under eccentric load, while conventional methods may underestimate the shear stress in the CSWs. Additionally, this study introduces shear stress amplification factors, elucidating the relative contributions of shear force, bending moment, torsional, and distortional effects to the overall shear stress, thereby providing valuable insights for the design of tapered BGCSWs.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15557,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Constructional Steel Research","volume":"229 ","pages":"Article 109522"},"PeriodicalIF":4.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143629939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a linear filtering method, the fluctuating wind speeds and wind loads applicable to SLS were simulated. The accuracy of the obtained fluctuating wind speeds was verified by comparing them with Davenport and Panofsky spectra. Furthermore, a finite element modeling method for SLS under wind loads was proposed, and the results from the numerical simulation were compared with existing wind tunnel test results, confirming the accuracy and reliability of the proposed numerical simulation method. Two different SLS models with distinct cable arrangement methods were established, and their natural vibration and wind-induced responses were analysed and compared through numerical simulations. The comparison results indicated that the out-of-plane cable arrangement method provided better wind resistance performance for cable-stiffened SLS structures than the in-plane cable arrangement. To further explore the wind resistance performance of cable-stiffened SLS structures, a parameter analysis was conducted, including parameters such as rise-to-span ratio, member cross-sections, cable sectional areas, and initial prestress. A total of 18 grouted specimens were tested to failure under axial loading, and the shear resistance, failure modes, and strain distribution of the external tube were examined. Additionally, the effects of shear key quantity and spacing on the shear resistance of the specimens were investigated. The test results indicate that the shear resistance of the L-shaped connection is approximately 43.2 % to 61.0 % of that of the square connection. When the shear keys are sufficiently and properly arranged, the shear resistance of the square connection can reach the section yielding resistance of the external tube. Finally, finite element (FE) analyses were performed to examine the damage distribution of the grout during loading. Measured strain data and FE results reveal that the confinement provided by the external tube to the grout varies circumferentially for both the L-shaped and square connections. FE results further show that isolated compressive struts are rarely observed in the L-shaped connection, which explains why its shear resistance is significantly lower than that of the square connection.</div></div>","PeriodicalId":15557,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Constructional Steel Research","volume":"229 ","pages":"Article 109521"},"PeriodicalIF":4.0,"publicationDate":"2025-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143629937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces the Dissipative Replaceable Bracing Connection (DRBrC), which utilizes a steel pin as a fuse to absorb seismic energy. The DRBrC connects the bracing to the column via a dissipative device, which can be easily replaced after a seismic event. The device consists of two internal eye-bar plates welded to a plate, forming a T-joint, with a similar endplate welded to the diagonal brace. These components are bolted together, enabling the replacement of the dissipative pin. The column connection also features external eye-bar plates. Following a seismic event, the pin device can be replaced, while the primary structural elements are preserved for reuse.
