Comparative study on the shear resistance of L-shaped and square grouted sleeve connections in modular integrated construction
This study presents a comparative analysis of the shear resistance of L-shaped and square grouted sleeve connections used in modular integrated construction. A total of 18 grouted specimens were tested to failure under axial loading, and the shear resistance, failure modes, and strain distribution of the external tube were examined. Additionally, the effects of shear key quantity and spacing on the shear resistance of the specimens were investigated. The test results indicate that the shear resistance of the L-shaped connection is approximately 43.2 % to 61.0 % of that of the square connection. When the shear keys are sufficiently and properly arranged, the shear resistance of the square connection can reach the section yielding resistance of the external tube. Finally, finite element (FE) analyses were performed to examine the damage distribution of the grout during loading. Measured strain data and FE results reveal that the confinement provided by the external tube to the grout varies circumferentially for both the L-shaped and square connections. FE results further show that isolated compressive struts are rarely observed in the L-shaped connection, which explains why its shear resistance is significantly lower than that of the square connection.
The Journal of Constructional Steel Research provides an international forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest developments in structural steel research and their applications. It is aimed not only at researchers but also at those likely to be most affected by research results, i.e. designers and fabricators. Original papers of a high standard dealing with all aspects of steel research including theoretical and experimental research on elements, assemblages, connection and material properties are considered for publication.
