The pre-processing methods used are: deleting missing values, imputing zeroes, means, medians, modes, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Predictive Mean Matching (PMM). Each one of these pre-processing methods will be paired with two normalization methods, log2 and Z-Score. After training, the models will be tested using a validation set, derived from the training set, representing an unseen partition dataset. Subsequently performance metrics will be obtained and compared across each of the models for the training performance and the test performance. These comparisons will then be analyzed and interpreted. The aim of our work was to potentially identify the impact of pre-processing approaches on predictor construction to potentially identify a standard method for expression profile analysis using machine learning methods.","PeriodicalId":154731,"journal":{"name":"2019 IV Jornadas Costarricenses de Investigación en Computación e Informática (JoCICI)","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131762552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The following case study shows how the analysis of topics threads based on interactions of micro messages extracted from videogames forums allowed us to identify the challenges associated to the processing of this particular type of content. An original technique for segmentation of groups of interactions was evaluated with the objective of applying algorhythms for topics detection. Despite the high volume of micro messages that were highly disperse, overloaded with emojis and which contained slang associated with every community and videogame; it was possible to detect inappropriate topics according to the age associated to the category of the videogame.","PeriodicalId":154731,"journal":{"name":"2019 IV Jornadas Costarricenses de Investigación en Computación e Informática (JoCICI)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127986180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A tool designed for this type of data collection is ResearchLogger and, in addition to keystrokes and clicks, it collects screenshots at predefined intervals and images around the mouse pointer. The main roadblock for researchers using this tool is analyzing the images it generates, which are very diverse and usually need to be processed manually. In particular, one action that is very hard to recognize without using the images is text selection; this action is very important since it might indicate copying, replacing or formatting of a text passage. In this paper, we present two solutions that support researchers in the review of such images and we test them using data from a previous pilot study. Results show that they can be useful to detect images with the specific user action of text selection.","PeriodicalId":154731,"journal":{"name":"2019 IV Jornadas Costarricenses de Investigación en Computación e Informática (JoCICI)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134123380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The companies that built them have not included good security and privacy measures to protect the identification of the devices through an analysis of the metadata contained in the traffic packets. A case study was implemented with five IoT devices (Foscam camera, baby monitor, smart TV box, smart TV set, Hue Bridge light system) connected by an intranet. The traffic generated by those devices is analyzed in terms of packet size, external communications, DNS requests, traffic direction, and protocols used.The packet traffic lets us determine that during normal operation the IoT devices communicate with many sites around the world, sometimes in unexpected ways. We arrive at the conclusion that the IoT devices disclose private information about the life and costumes of the family members using them.","PeriodicalId":154731,"journal":{"name":"2019 IV Jornadas Costarricenses de Investigación en Computación e Informática (JoCICI)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132919119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been used to characterize rock’s porous formations in oil reservoirs, in laboratory tests and field. Recently, these experiments can be reproduced in the computer, using a precise model of the porous media given by micro-tomographic images of the rock sample. The NMR simulated experiments have some advantages over the real experiment, due to their efficiency and lower costs; but they can also provide a better understanding of the physical phenomenon associated to an NMR realization. In this paper, a case of this process is described: Real laboratory experiments are compared with simulated ones, and this comparison is used to improve computer simulation parameters in order to provide a better match to laboratory results. This can lead to better estimates of petrophysical deliverables and to the improvement of the computer model precision.","PeriodicalId":154731,"journal":{"name":"2019 IV Jornadas Costarricenses de Investigación en Computación e Informática (JoCICI)","volume":"167 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131967922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These services offer a lot of opportunities to shift the challenges of input and output between both humans and computers to a more communicative realm. An event reminder system based on speech recognition with autonomous features can help to create and catalogue appointments and events of interest in a natural and efficient way.The goal of this project is to aid users in creating digital reminders through the use of robots based on speech recognition. We propose a hardware-software architecture for a robot based on an Arduino Uno and a smartphone running the Android platform.The first prototype of this small robot assitant is able to receive voice commands and move forward, backward, to the right, and to the left as well as move its head forward and backward. In addition, it is capable of converting voice input into stored events and then providing aural reminders according to the date and time provided.","PeriodicalId":154731,"journal":{"name":"2019 IV Jornadas Costarricenses de Investigación en Computación e Informática (JoCICI)","volume":"249 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123262888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of this, research efforts have generated vast amounts of data, such as gene expression profiles and cell lines to use in knowledge discovery research. By using the expression profiles from these cell lines, it is possible to identify novel driver-like candidates through the development of machine learning models. In this study, we focused on constructing a robust classifier capable of identifying new driver genes from a prediction set composed of non-coding genes. The training set was constructed using 300 known pan-cancer driver genes previously reported in the literature, and ~2700 non-driver genes. For our work we used two machine learning algorithms: random forests and support vector machines. During the construction of each model, optimization or fine-tuning was performed, which included feature selection using a random forest-based method, balancing of the classes due to the training set being imbalanced, and normalization in order to reduce the effects of extreme values, and to make samples comparable. Our results indicate that the highest performing model was the random forest, with an AUC-ROC of 0,9696. When applied in the prediction set, it identified 525 potential non-coding driver-like genes, with potential association to cancer. We expect that a next step would be to functionally annotate these candidates and look for co-expression between the diversity of cancer that data exposes.","PeriodicalId":154731,"journal":{"name":"2019 IV Jornadas Costarricenses de Investigación en Computación e Informática (JoCICI)","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115761119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
