It demonstrates first the way in which new criminological ideas were widely reported in the press and by other means in nineteenth-century Sweden, partly due to Lombroso’s own celebrity but also partly due to public interest in the proceedings of international congresses. It then goes on to analyze the way in which ideas of “the born criminal” and the social bases of crime came to be seen, by some, as a challenge to the existing political order. Finally, the article considers the impact of Positivist criminology in the spheres of medical discourse and jurisprudence.","PeriodicalId":154337,"journal":{"name":"Crime, Histoire & Sociétés","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122826198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As someone whose life placed him at the centre of significant controversies, and as the symbolic figure of Italian positivism, Lombroso’s legacy has repeatedly been the object of conflict and been used to support various causes, through a period marked by profound and dramatic change. Historiographical reflection on his position within the human sciences, however, particularly in Italy and the United States, is of much more recent advent, and is still ongoing.","PeriodicalId":154337,"journal":{"name":"Crime, Histoire & Sociétés","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128558145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach taken is to link changes in discourse with the processes by which criminal figures were identified, controlled, classified, represented and (eventually) made part of folklore. Such an approach involves linking the literary imagination of the nineteenth century with political context and with the theory and practice of the criminal justice system as they combined to define crime in public discourse.","PeriodicalId":154337,"journal":{"name":"Crime, Histoire & Sociétés","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122432271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Il inspire a la fois l’horreur et la curiosite. Avec la Revolution, il acquiert un caractere romantique en tant que symbole meme du despotisme d’un passe revolu. L’histoire s’est longtemps contentee de cette image miserabiliste et l’a perpetuee. Or, l’incursion dans les archives carcerales parisiennes devoile des dimensions insoupconnees de ce cachot tyrannique et en change le visage. Car, au ras du sol, dans les pratiques quotidiennes des geoles de la capitale, le cachot apparait comme un outil du maintien de l’ordre dont les modes d’emploi sont infiniment plus complexes et subtils que ne le laissait croire le « tombeau des vivants » que les recits ont decrit.","PeriodicalId":154337,"journal":{"name":"Crime, Histoire & Sociétés","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134099828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a context of British government apprehension as to the legality of its rule in India, the article focusses on official concerns about the unmonitored circulation of toxic substances, particularly arsenic, which culminated in the Poisons Act (1904). The article investigates the role of toxic substances in historical narratives of expertise, and also traces the emergence of the idea of an autonomous native society in colonial and medical/forensic discourse, locating its articulation in exchanges between British and native salaried experts.","PeriodicalId":154337,"journal":{"name":"Crime, Histoire & Sociétés","volume":"322 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115867907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
