No real introduction is included, which could have contained the central research questions and aims of the book. The volume really consists of chapters that can be perfectly read separately. Gray has an established and growing reputation as a researcher into the English criminal justice system of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and it is entirely appropriate that he should turn his hand to writing an overview book on this subject, broadly defined. Writing a book over the timespan envisaged here – joining, as it were the long eighteenth and the long nineteenth centuries - is ambitious, but any risks thus involved are fully justified. This is a very effective overv...","PeriodicalId":154337,"journal":{"name":"Crime, Histoire & Sociétés","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122969135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plus specifiquement, il s’interesse aux lettres de remission accordees aux soldats. En comparant le contenu de ces grâces avec les normes prescrites par la legislation militaire, cette recherche envisage la possibilite d’un « gouvernement par la grâce » des armees bourguignonnes. L’incrimination des formes les plus extremes de la brutalite militaire, ainsi que les nombreuses grâces delivrees aux combattants qui faisaient un usage modere et legitime de la violence, suggerent que les ducs de Bourgogne chercherent a promouvoir l’image idealisee d’un soldat professionnel et obeissant, loyal serviteur de l’Etat.","PeriodicalId":154337,"journal":{"name":"Crime, Histoire & Sociétés","volume":"261 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123434813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
