Some ubiquitous issues of seasonal items manufacturing such as production error in off-season and insufficient capability in midseason is analyzed. We propose an integrated MTO-MTS production mode for seasonal products, and develop a model with stochastic demands to study the relationship between delivery lead time and optimal production quantity, and demonstrate analytically how delivery lead time related factors influence optimal production quantity and cost.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"28 34","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134412739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although there is a wealth of academic literature examining outsourcing and offshoring, there is little academic literature that addresses the current outsourcing decision most firms facing, which is where to outsource. Given multi-attribute nature of offshore location selection, this paper argues that five factors should be considered for decisions, and proposes the use of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and PROMETHEE as aids in making offshore location selection decisions. AHP is used to analyze the structure of the location selection problem and determine weights of the criteria, and PROMETHEE method is used for final ranking, together with changing weights for a sensitivity analysis. It shows by means of an application that the hybrid method is very well suited as a decision-making tool for the offshore location selection decision. Finally, potential issues for future research are presented.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133708351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since this algebra is efficient and generic, the absence of a general systematic technique available for such systems using this tool is a strong motivatioui for investigating the issue. (Min, +) constraints are developed to handle resource sharing of flow-shops. In particular, the part that can be modeled by a Timed Event Graph induce (Min, +)-linear equations which are constrained regarding to the resource availability. The proposed algebraic model is proved to describe exactly the exhaustive set of possible behaviors of dealt systems. An example of flow-shop with setup times is modeled using our approach.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122340919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While good suppliers can contribute to the supply chain's overall performance, incorrect selection can drive the whole supply chain into disarray. In this paper, we focus on the problem of supplier selection in a manufacturing firm. We allow each supplier to compete with each other to be selected by the buyer for procurement. The competition is modeled in an auction framework as a bidding process where a supplier cannot observe immediate actions of other suppliers but has complete knowledge of their previous actions. We allow a supplier to use this knowledge in guessing other suppliers future actions and bid accordingly. Our model enables repeated games, which can be assumed to be more flexible compared to most game theory applications in the supplier selection literature. Reinforcement learning and fictitious play are used in the auction framework to implement repeated games.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121046293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper analyzes the use of decision tree for corporate financial distress prediction. Linear models, although simple and easy to interpret, require statistical assumptions which may be unrealistic; meanwhile, neural networks are usually too complicated to comprehend. Decision tree, as one of the most efficient data mining methods, is not only able to discriminate patterns which are not linearly separable, but also can be easily understood. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed to select dilation and translation parameters that yield a decision tree classifier with good parsimony characteristics. The models are built in a case study involving both failed and continuing Chinese listed firms in the period of 2003-2005. The results, supported by a test study, show that decision trees may be a valid model to predict listed firms' financial distress in China.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125762226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This causes that the simulation, and later implementation, of dynamic supply chains, is not delivered in a realistic way, especially when business decisions are based on process optimization that features capabilities (what?) and orchestrations (how?), but the underlying structure and metrics are not in sync with business simulations. We present ongoing research that aims at covering the interactions between companies, emphasizing the interactions between methods typically associated with particular fields such as order fulfillment, parts and service support, or industrial packaging. We have developed an online Logistical Simulator (LOST) and have tested it with undergraduates and professionals in continuing education. We present the basic method for presenting and playing with variables and the preliminary conclusions of our work.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125548362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this concept, knowledge and decisions are distributed among the participants of the logistic process. Vehicles and goods become intelligent, interactive, and capable of deciding about how to achieve their aims. Software agent technology provides a means of bringing about autonomy by information sharing and decision-making capabilities. This paper presents the approach of integrating agent technology and knowledge management approaches like clustering techniques to ensure robust and efficient planning and scheduling in the transportation domain. Logistic entities are represented as software agents, where the objective is to cluster these entities which have common goals - like packages having the same destination, same type of packages, etc. The approach of autonomy through software agents and clustering techniques is expected to significantly decrease the communication demand imposed upon the logistic network for a set of required tasks to be performed. An enhanced clustering algorithm has been applied on a logistic scenario and compared with the original algorithm in terms of effective cluster formation with less iteration. This approach identifies challenges in the area of communication that arise from the distributed decision process and the interacting components.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131302691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Service - Oriented Approach To Onshore Gas Transmission Pipeline Construction 陆上输气管道建设的服务导向

{"title":"A Service - Oriented Approach To Onshore Gas Transmission Pipeline Construction","authors":"L. Dunn, P. Gibson","doi":"10.1109/SOLI.2007.4383907","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/SOLI.2007.4383907","url":null,"abstract":"This research investigates whether a traditional manufacturing planning and control strategy would make Onshore Gas Transmission Pipeline Construction more competitive and if so, design the strategy. An in-depth case study of Gas Transmission Pipeline Construction was carried out, along with an extensive literature review. The current pipeline construction process was analyzed from a strategic management perspective. From this perspective, it was found that the traditional `make and sell' attitude of manufacturers has now almost entirely given way to a customer oriented `sense and respond' service philosophy. This is compounded by the needs for waste avoidance, cost efficiency and service to the customer. This research investigates the strategic opportunities for establishing advantages over competitors by designing unique service oriented supply chain strategies. Rather than relying on functional hierarchy and command and control governance where a chain of commitments are poorly connected and difficult to reconfigure, the pipeline construction participants is challenged to develop more flexible process designs around a state of the art service based architecture. Complexity reduction has traditionally been used to deal with intricate construction supply chains. However, the architecture developed and demonstrated in this research will allow participants in pipeline construction to develop strategic opportunities around ideas of complexity absorption. The architecture is built on the premise that complexity absorption creates an organization that is strategically superior because it becomes a complex adaptive system that is unique to that organization.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129051838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we describe a method for improving project management based on (a) a thorough analysis of risks affecting activities in a project plan, i.e., the root factors leading to cost and time overruns, and (b) an optimization of the resources allocated to each activity in the project plan in order to maximize the probability of completing on time and within-budget. One key feature of our method is its capability to adapt and learn the risk factors affecting activities during the course of the project, which enables project managers to dynamically reallocate resources to ensure a better outcome given the updated risk profile.","PeriodicalId":154053,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Conference on Service Operations and Logistics, and Informatics","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123726343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
