We argue that the rise of information-related skills as a technical communication competency alongside the rise of big data as a sociotechnical phenomenon require us to rethink outcomes and assignments. In particular, these issues point to the need to emphasize design at the level of complex information rather than only at the broad level of the page or screen. As a first step in planning an approach to information design that is responsive to these needs, the authors have reviewed their local professional writing learning outcomes in response to a review of relevant literature, have developed flexible assignment guidelines, and have constructed a plan for integrating new assignments into the curriculum. The next stage of this research will implement a theory-driven information design assignment and evaluate its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":153529,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 36th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129312055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Incorporating corpus-assisted discourse analysis and comparative rhetorical analysis, this paper examines the representation of AI in news media in the U.S. and China, the two AI superpowers in the world. The findings suggest that the U.S. and China have different strategic areas of interest in AI, covering computer, machine, Internet, pattern recognition, driverless vehicle, and big data.","PeriodicalId":153529,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 36th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125917193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As our TPC classrooms continue to address the precarious social exigencies and cultural issues of writing for the public, our students need experience responding to such needs in their careers and communities. This report addresses this emerging trend by turning to the design thinking process as a scheme to aid TPC instructors in bringing social justice issues into their TPC assignments and curricula, particularly in working with client projects. The author provides lessons learned for TPC instructors involved with social justice-focused client projects, including the successes and shortcomings of employing the design thinking process alongside typical TPC genres such as white paper reports and usability testing of documentation.","PeriodicalId":153529,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 36th ACM International Conference on the Design of Communication","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133258139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
