WinCube is a multi-year, multi-disciplinary project conducted at the University of Manitoba in which students from different departments participate in the design of a CubeSat. The purpose of the WinCube project is to provide an opportunity for engineering students to design and implement a space-ready satellite. The project also acts as a vessel for a high school science experiment, which will run an experiment while in space, and relay results down to a satellite base station. The CDH unit must manage the operations and internal communications of the various units inside the satellite. This unit includes a power management application, serial communications protocols to relay information, and a trustworthy timing system. The power management application must monitor the state of the battery, the output of the solar panels, as well as control the amount of power provided to each of the primary units. Serial communications are used to interact with other devices on the satellite. Finally, an external real time clock and watchdog timer were used to enhance the reliability of the system. Special measures were taken to protect the CDH unit from the harsh operating environment and to monitor the health of the system beyond temperature and battery readings by performing periodic tests of components.","PeriodicalId":153464,"journal":{"name":"2009 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123130122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given a certain PSN model setup (i.e., topology, routing algorithm, and source load value) a “natural” entropy profile of normal packet traffic monitored at selected routers characterizes normal operation of PSN model. When entropy of packet traffic deviates significantly from this “natural” profile it means that some anomaly in packet traffic emerges. Our simulations of ping DDoS attacks show that after start of attacks the entropy of packet traffics monitored network-wide at relatively small sets of routers may significantly drop and that it is easier to detect these drops if static routing is used instead of dynamic routing. Thus, for detection of DDoS attacks and other anomalous packet traffic information entropy of packet traffic monitored network-wide at properly selected routers can be a useful tool.","PeriodicalId":153464,"journal":{"name":"2009 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131980905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, traffic classification and prioritization are key features in providing preferential treatments of the traffic in the core of the network. In this paper, we address the joint problem of path allocation and admission control (JPAC) of new Service Level Agreements (SLA) in a DiffServ Domain. In order to maximize the resources utilization and the number of admitted SLAs in the network, we consider a statistical bandwidth constraints allowing for a certain overbooking over the network's links. SLAs' admissibility decisions are based on solving to optimality an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) model. When tested by simulations, numerical results confirm that the proposed model can be solved to optimality for real-sized instances within acceptable computation times and substantially reduces the SLAs blocking probability, compared to a the Greedy mechanism proposed in the literature.","PeriodicalId":153464,"journal":{"name":"2009 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129700542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a new technique for mapping the location of transmission equipment for the purposes of GIC simulation is proposed. The DC modeling of autotransformers for the purpose GIC studies is discussed. The simulator models the electrical power system as an admittance matrix. GIC results for two study systems as obtained from the developed simulator are compared with those obtained from the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). Finally, the simulator is applied to the entire Hydro One 500/230 kV transmission system to predict GICs. This simulation will help Hydro One plan its mitigation strategies to protect against geomagnetic storms.","PeriodicalId":153464,"journal":{"name":"2009 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering","volume":"206 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113959147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These scheduling policies are tasked with making target-to-camera assignments in an attempt to maximize the number of targets that can be imaged with the system's active cameras. A comparative simulation-based evaluation has been performed to investigate the performance of the system under different target and system operating parameters for all five scheduling policies. Parameters considered include: target entry conditions, congestion levels, target-to-camera speeds, target trajectories, and number of active cameras. An overall trend in the relative performance of the scheduling algorithms was observed. The Least System Reconfiguration and Future Least System Reconfiguration scheduling policies performed the best for the majority of conditions investigated, while the Load Sharing and First Come First Serve policies performed the poorest. The performance of the Earliest Deadline First policy was highly dependent on target predictability.","PeriodicalId":153464,"journal":{"name":"2009 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering","volume":"394 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114378798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, maintaining the PEMFC system in its optimal operating conditions is one of the most important research orientations in the domain. In fact, the system's efficiency depends highly on the electric power generated, the amount of hydrogen used and the power consumed by the air compressor to operate the fuel cell stack. In this work, the experimental efficiency of the PEMFC system has been evaluated for different values of the PEMFC parameters such as purges frequency, stack temperature, air relative humidity, pressures and mass flow rates of reagents. Then the experimental results show that for a given load current, an optimal efficiency can be obtained by choosing the right values for the parameters.","PeriodicalId":153464,"journal":{"name":"2009 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114915548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to optimize the efficiency the loss minimization algorithm is developed based on motor model and operating conditions. The d-axis armature current is utilized to minimize the losses of the IPMSM in a closed loop vector control environment. The complete simulation model for the closed loop vector control of IPMSM drive incorporating the proposed loss minimization algorithm is developed using Matlab/Simulink software. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is tested in simulation at different dynamic operating conditions. It is found for the results that the efficiency of the proposed IPMSM drive is improved significantly as compared to the conventional id=0 control technique.","PeriodicalId":153464,"journal":{"name":"2009 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114486875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design issues are introduced by summarizing the current status of VSC HVDC technology and related installations, research in the use of VSC HVDC for offshore wind farms, and characteristics of wave energy converters using linear generators. A DC bus wave farm design using a linear generator model is presented and simulations using time shifted and variable amplitude wave inputs demonstrate the effect of increasing the size of the wave farm on smoothing short-term variations in the power output due to wave oscillations.","PeriodicalId":153464,"journal":{"name":"2009 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128076411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
