A structural model for the finite element method (FEM) able to simulate accurately the experimental results was determined to analyze the strengthening efficiency of the NSM technique analytically. Applying the model, parametric analysis was performed considering the groove depth and spacing of CFRP laminates. Analytical study on the groove depth revealed the existence of a critical depth beyond which the increase of the ultimate load becomes imperceptible. In other words, this means that there exists a limit of strengthening efficiency where it remains in a definite level even if the groove depth is increased. Analytical results regard to the spacing of the CFRP laminates showed that comparatively smooth fluctuations of the ultimate load were produced by the variation of the spacing and the presence of an optimal spacing range for which relatively better strengthening efficiency can be obtained. Particularly, a spacing preventing the interference between adjacent CFRP laminates and the influence of the concrete cover at the edges as well as allowing the CFRP laminates to behave independently was derived. Using the analytical results, various strengthening schemes could be established with different numbers of CFRP laminates, groove depths and dispositions of the reinforcements for a determinate quantity of reinforcements.","PeriodicalId":151616,"journal":{"name":"SP-230: 7th International Symposium on Fiber-Reinforced (FRP) Polymer Reinforcement for Concrete Structures","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114979814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Steel-Free Hybrid FRP Stiffened Panel-Concrete Deck System","authors":"L. Cheng, V. Karbhari","doi":"10.14359/14858","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/14858","url":null,"abstract":"Synopsis: This paper presents a design, analysis, and characterization of a hybrid deck system incorporating a thin Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) stiffened hat-panel configured stay-in-place formwork that serves as flexural reinforcement with steel-free concrete poured on top. Quasi-static tests were conducted to first investigate the flexural behavior of the system. To understand the deck performance under traffic loads that induce repetitive stress cycles during the service life, a two-span continuous deck specimen (1.22 m wide) was tested by subjecting it to a total of 2.36 million cycles of load that simulates an AASHTO design truck with inclusion of the impact factor at both low and high magnitudes. The concrete-panel interfacial response due to the presence of sand and interlocking ribs was characterized by performing a series of 610 mm wide deck section tests, the results of which were used to calibrate a finiteelement (FE) based analytical model. The effect of the shear span-to-depth ratio, carbon fiber reinforcement ratio, and rib spacing were then evaluated by performing a parametric study using the calibrated nonlinear FE model. A simplified design approach is also proposed.","PeriodicalId":151616,"journal":{"name":"SP-230: 7th International Symposium on Fiber-Reinforced (FRP) Polymer Reinforcement for Concrete Structures","volume":"300 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122800552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Flexural Strengthening of RC Beams Using Steel Reinforced Polymer (SRP) Composites","authors":"Y. J. Kim, A. Fam, A. Kong, R. The steel reinforced polymer (SRP) composite consists of high-carbon steel unidirectional Hardwire® fabrics embedded in epoxy resin, and offers high strength and stiffness characteristics at a reasonable cost. In this paper, the mechanical properties of SRP are evaluated and its application in flexural strengthening of RC beams is investigated. Six beams have been tested in three-point bending to study the effect of SRP retrofitting on flexural behavior, failure modes, and crack patterns. Test parameters include variation of the width of SRP sheets and the use of SRP U-wraps at both ends to prevent premature failure caused by delamination of the longitudinal sheet. Significant increase in flexural capacity, up to 53 %, and pseudo-ductile failure modes have been observed in the SRP-strengthened beams. Failure is governed primarily by concrete cover delamination at the tips of the SRP sheets or crushing of concrete at mid-span. It is also shown that the U-wraps have improved flexural stiffness by means of controlling diagonal crack width and providing anchorages to the longitudinal SRP sheets, which reduces their slip. Shear stress concentration near the cut-off point of the SRP sheet has also been investigated. An analytical model is proposed to predict the nominal strength of the SRP-strengthened beams.","PeriodicalId":151616,"journal":{"name":"SP-230: 7th International Symposium on Fiber-Reinforced (FRP) Polymer Reinforcement for Concrete Structures","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131620916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Stepped Isothermal Method for CreepRupture Studies of Aramid Fibres","authors":"K. Alwis, C. Burgoyne","doi":"10.14359/14832","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/14832","url":null,"abstract":"Synopsis: Aramid fibres have been used in rope construction and for prestressing tendons, but when subjected to a constant static load the fibres creep with time and may rupture, leading to a catastrophic failure of the rope. To understand this behaviour many life-time models have been suggested but they suffer from the lack of long term creep rupture data to make firm conclusions on rupture times and load levels. Such data is expensive to obtain using conventional creep testing as it takes a long time before failure of a specimen. To overcome this problem, and to obtain the creeprupture data at low stress levels within a reasonably short time scale (hours), accelerated testing methods, the Stepped Isothermal Method (SIM) and Time Temperature Superposition (TTSP), have been investigated. In SIM testing a single yarn specimen is tested at a specific stress level under a series of increasing temperature steps from which a single response curve, known as the master curve, is obtained which predicts the long-term behaviour. Some manipulation of the data is required, but the technique has many advantages over the TTSP and conventional creep testing and it can be automated to obtain the long-term creep-rupture data points relatively easily.","PeriodicalId":151616,"journal":{"name":"SP-230: 7th International Symposium on Fiber-Reinforced (FRP) Polymer Reinforcement for Concrete Structures","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130947017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Advantages of the new system include reduced self-weight and enhanced durability. The girders consist of top and bottom concrete flanges connected by precast vertical and diagonal members made of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes filled with concrete. Glass FRP dowels and corrosion-resistant steel stud reinforcement are used, respectively, to connect the vertical and diagonal members to the concrete flanges. The flanges are pretentioned with carbon FRP tendons. The deck slab is reinforced with corrosion-resistant steel bars in the bottom transverse layer and with glass FRP bars in the bottom longitudinal and the top layers. The girders may be posttensioned with external carbon FRP tendons to balance the slab weight and to provide continuity in multi-span bridges. The general details of the system and an experimental evaluation of its critical components, namely, the FRP tubes and the truss connection, are presented. Three types of FRP tube and four types of connection are investigated. The results of testing eight connection specimens under static loading are presented. The tests have shown superior performance of the connection when filament wound tubes and continuous double-headed studs are used.","PeriodicalId":151616,"journal":{"name":"SP-230: 7th International Symposium on Fiber-Reinforced (FRP) Polymer Reinforcement for Concrete Structures","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114471490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Modelling of Reinforced Concrete Flexural Members Strengthened with Near-Surface Mounted FRP Reinforcement","authors":"R. El-Hacha, S. Rizkalla, R. Kotynia","doi":"10.14359/14916","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14359/14916","url":null,"abstract":"Synopsis: This paper presents an analytical investigation conducted to study the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with various Near-Surface Mounted (NSM) Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRP) reinforcements. The materials used in this investigation included carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) rebars and strips, and glass fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) rebars and strips. The analysis included the effects of strengthening on the serviceability and ultimate limit states as well the effect of tension stiffening. The effectiveness of NSM FRP rebars and strips was examined and compared to externally bonded (EB) FRP strips and sheets using the same material type and axial stiffness. Results from the analytical models were compared with those obtained from experimental studies. The analytical results agree very well with those obtained from the experimental results. It was found that the analytical model could effectively simulate the behaviour of the reinforced concrete beams strengthened with various NSM FRP and EB FRP reinforcements. Using the same axial stiffness of FRP to strengthen reinforced concrete beams, the beams strengthened with NSM FRP reinforcement achieved higher ultimate load than beams strengthened with EB FRP reinforcement. This result is due to the high utilization of the tensile strength of the FRP reinforcement.","PeriodicalId":151616,"journal":{"name":"SP-230: 7th International Symposium on Fiber-Reinforced (FRP) Polymer Reinforcement for Concrete Structures","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127679244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research study investigates the effect of surface moisture, relative humidity and temperature on the bond strength between concrete and CFRP reinforcement. Three test methods including a surface pull-off bond test, a surface shear-torsion bond test, and a flexural test were used to evaluate the bond performance of the FRP fabric under various installation conditions. Test results revealed that the high surface moisture content, extreme humidity and extreme low temperature can be detrimental to bond strength. Although the high temperature improved the bond strength, it is not recommended because of decreased set-time and saturant workability. Based on the results presented in this paper, a maximum allowable limit on surface moisture content, relative humidity, and temperature of 4.3%, 82%, and 90F, respectively, at installation is recommended.","PeriodicalId":151616,"journal":{"name":"SP-230: 7th International Symposium on Fiber-Reinforced (FRP) Polymer Reinforcement for Concrete Structures","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125046880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
