Transfusions have several drawbacks, for that reason perfluorocarbon emulsions (PFC) have been developed to replace the blood function of transport oxygen to tissues and maintain intravascular volume in case of hemorrhage. In addition, PFC emulsions must have physicochemical properties suitable to be compatible with the physiological medium. In order to know the emulsion properties and analyze their effects when it is used intravascularly, the emulsion was characterized evaluating the particle size distribution, rheological behavior, osmolality and pH over time.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126564794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This kind of material aims to repair or regenerate a tissue when it has been damaged through disease or trauma, providing a temporal structure to facilitate cellular infiltration and growth, provide similar mechanical properties and avoid mobility, immunocompatibility and secondary interventions. We work to synthesize a PLA scaffold with potential for bone regeneration produced by a salt leaching/gas foaming method and its respective morphological and mechanical characterization by techniques such as: swelling, compression assays, SEM and optical microscopy.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127436660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is composed by three blocks: data acquisition system, data sending and receiving and data visualization. In the data acquisition block several devices for sensing vital parameters were designed constituting a Body Sensor Network, BSN. Temperature, Heart Rate, Respiratory Rate and Blood Pressure were sensed. Some mobile applications for both cell phones and smartphones were developed in order to acquire other clinical data. A system under the GSM network was programmed for sending the information. This constitutes the second block. The connectivity capabilities of the Cell phones and smartphones were used for sending the forms. For sending the vital signs acquired a commercial hardware was implemented. A web application was developed in the third block. This application allows the remote visualization of the data. The system proposed provides an affordable, efficient and flexible platform for telemonitoring relevant clinical parameters from patients.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131457895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They provide a low-cost and label-free platform, exploiting the difference of size, density and compressibility. Their ability to perform isolation of tumor cells from white blood cells makes them strategic tools for medical applications such as early detection or future tools for monitoring personalized chemotherapy. Polymer-based microdevices implemented by ultrasounds have been developed to isolate these cells with an efficiency level up to 70%. This technology is currently being optimized to reach efficiencies higher than 90% for its clinical application.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134487760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The anofthalmia, is an ocular ball pathology in which is possible that it may not be formed completely, or it exist an absence of it. It brings as result a no vision in the patient and a facial asymmetry during growing process with morphological and physiological consequences. For the treatment it is necessary a surgical intervention that provides motion in the patient's prosthetic eyeball. Postoperative results are evaluated by the specialists but subjectively, because the current techniques just present qualitative evaluations. In this presentation is discussed the necessity of design diagnostic tools with a noninvasive characteristic which offers a measurable value of the improved movement in patient's eyeball. For the process it was analyzed a database with information from unilateral anophthalmia patients with ages between 7 and 15 years old who underwent surgery at Clinica de Oftalmologia of Cali.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133247694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These cycles have been studied and characterized by means of polysomnography studies, and have revealed different brain activities visible in the EEG recording. From this, the slow waves, a hallmark for the non-REM sleep stage, have been associated with important functional processes, such as long term memory storage, synaptic regulation and plasticity. Abnormalities in the electrical expression of such slows waves could be an indicator of long term deficiencies in these functional process as a consequence of some neurological disorders like epilepsy. In this work, we have studied different characteristics measured from the electrical expression of slow waves between normal and epileptic subjects. These parameters allowed us to determine significant differences in the preferential depolarization and hyperpolarization times, suggesting a possible alterations in the underlying neuronal processes.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116193150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These functions depend not only on nucleotide sequences but also of RNA secondary structure (2D) [1]; this is the case of the extensively characterized IRES structure (Internal Ribosome Entry Site) in Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) RNA [2]. Although experimental techniques are available for studying molecular conformation and folding, their high cost limits a more extended use, therefore bioinformatics programs are currently used for RNA 2D prediction. How dissimilar methods are used in most available in silico tools [3-7] we evaluated the accuracy of five programs for RNA secondary structure prediction, using a HCV IRES domain II as a model [8]. Among assessed tools, MATLAB v7.10.0TM did not generate the expected shape for HCV domain II, resulting in the lowest Sensitivity (S) and Predictive Positive (PPV) values, while RNAShape 2.1.6, RNAstructure v 5.4 and Assemble 1.0.4 predicted the same topology, failing in pairings C19/G62 and G24/A56. Finally, Assemble 2.0 predicted the most acceptable topology of domain II, with the highest S and PPV values. Conclusion: None of the five programs could totally predict the topology of the structural model used.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122861262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
