Real time arrhythmias detection algorithms are necessary to improve this kind of devices. This article presents a premature ventricular contraction detection method based on Discrete Wavelet Transform for preprocessing, segmentation and feature extraction. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is used to perform baseline wander and powerline noise reduction algorithm. Three different feature spaces based on wavelet coefficients are tested. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied to reduce dimension into a lower feature space. K Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are developed and compared in terms of both accuracy and computational cost. Specificity of 97.18% and sensitivity of 96.47% with a prediction time of 0.47ms are accomplished. Computational burden is measured and compared with other methods to ensure that the developed method can be implemented in real time.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116607057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mechanisms involved in this non-invasive brain stimulation technique are not fully understood. Limited studies have shown that the action of the tSMS is primarily at the synapse. It has also been proposed that these magnetic fields alter the function of cell membrane ion channels. We present here clear evidences that incriminate the nitric oxide (NO) molecule as a key factor that explains the effects of tSMS in neural systems.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"2011 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129167453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pre, post-operative and rehabilitation results of eye motility are required by health specialists. However, the motility analysis techniques currently used, provide only a qualitative evaluation. This paper presents a systematic tool to quantify ocular motility in lateral, nasal, upper and lower eye movements, with the help of image acquisition and digital processing techniques. An interface that also allows relating pre and postoperative patient data, as well as, relevant data to the process of rehabilitation, was developed by the authors. This diagnostic tool created as part of this research is noninvasive, the test time is shorter and more comfortable in comparison to currently used techniques and tools, and provides a measurable value of improved prosthetic motility patient's eyeball. This tool development was verified on patients with unilateral anophthalmia with age between 7 and 15 years old at Clínica de Oftalmología in Cali, Colombia.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"98 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134244688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the knee with meniscal attachments considered as continuous elements has been done. Results were similar to those encountered in previous works. However, higher compressive stresses were found in the lateral menisci after applying a 1200 N compressive load to the knee at full extension [1]. These findings support previous studies demonstrating sensitivity of contact pressures to meniscal root attachment properties, and will also help to improve meniscal replacement surgery and increase the accuracy of knee models.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133519169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hydroxyapatite (HA) is a ceramic that allows not also the bioactive fixation, but cells and nutrients invasion to promote the tissue regeneration; however, it presents low mechanical resistance. In this study, hydroxyapatite foams -using gel-casting with two different monomers and percent solids of 40 and 50%- were prepared. Obtained foams were characterized by X Ray-Diffraction (XRD), by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), by porosity and interconnectivity determination and by bioactivity assay. The results shown that the manufactured foams present open and interconnected porous with approximate size of 200 μm, porosity of 67%, and interconnectivity of 60%. The immersion tests in SBF confirmed the bioactivity of the hydroxyapatite, which demonstrates that this is a high potential process to manufacture porous bodies with useful characteristics in tissue engineering.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116361797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But, to obtain a non-invasive estimation of these parameters on internal tissues, currently presents many difficulties that must be overcome. The use of high-frequency ultrasonic systems appears to offer a possible solution. In fact, the application of conventional ultrasonic imaging has shown this, but the spatial resolution related to this commercial option is not sufficient for a thickness evaluation with sufficient clinical significance, which would require accuracies of few microns. In this paper, some preliminary results of applying a new broadband ultrasonic procedure, recently developed by the authors for thickness measurement purposes, are analyzed for sub-millimeter layers made of materials similar (phantoms) to that of the biological tissues to be encountered into the artery walls. Two optional algorithms for estimating the power spectral density of the multi-pulse signals are assessed with some experimental echoes. Their potential resolutions and capabilities to provide accuracies around a micron are comparatively analyzed, for walls thickness estimation.","PeriodicalId":151015,"journal":{"name":"2013 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121985655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
