The human-work interface should be designed so as to match user needs and preferences when they have adapted to new work systems. System design must be based on analyses of the actual functionality of the work system itself and, for this purpose, a formulation of the intentions and reasons behind the work system design is necessary. The author reviews the taxonomy which is a result of several years of field studies and support system design to illustrate some of the potential applications which have been found to be important.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":150946,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record for 1992 Fifth Conference on Human Factors and Power Plants","volume":"429 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122558872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Faculty use the menu-driven Explorer to investigate instructional design principles by previewing critically acclaimed CAI, experimenting with presentation design, evaluating sample interaction sequences, controlling external media, and running simulations. Designed to be a subject of instruction as well as a tool of instruction. Explorer incorporates modules that faculty may use in their CAI projects. That design decision reflects the industrial CBT and academic software engineering backgrounds, of the project staff. Both the Explorer program and the synergism between CBT professionals and educators that led to its creation are described.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":150946,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record for 1992 Fifth Conference on Human Factors and Power Plants","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126268841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve these improvements in productivity and quality, it was necessary to develop a high standard within the maintenance community. Some key factors were increased critical self-assessment, improved measurements, more effective communications, and increased work involvement and empowerment to allow everyone to become responsible for decision affecting their own work. The improvements achieved in the maintenance program are part of the overall total quality improvement initiatives that are underway throughout the TVA. Quality action teams are continuing to search for ways to improve maintenance processes.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":150946,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record for 1992 Fifth Conference on Human Factors and Power Plants","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126488899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Expected changes include the shift toward more supervisory tasks, development of intervention strategies, and reallocation of function between human and machine. Results are reported in terms of the scope of new technology, human performance issues, the experience of the crew with digital control systems in a variety of industries including petrochemical and aerospace. Plans to conduct a limited probabilistic risk assessment/human reliability assessment (PRA/HRA) comparison between a conventional NUREG-1150 series plant and that same plant retrofit with distributed control and advanced instrumentation and display are presented. Changes needed to supplement existing HRA modeling methods and quantification techniques are discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":150946,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record for 1992 Fifth Conference on Human Factors and Power Plants","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131180505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Likewise, the skills to conduct such analyses should not remain with only a few highly specialized human factors practitioners. Rather, the methodologies, concepts, and information incorporated in HRAs, must be made available to operations and engineering personnel working in highly diverse industrial settings. Two challenges face the HRA practitioners: how to incorporate HRA concepts and methodologies into decision support systems that can proactively advise and forewarn operations personnel of error-prone situations, and how to incorporate HRA findings and methodologies into the initial design of a system.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":150946,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record for 1992 Fifth Conference on Human Factors and Power Plants","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131641132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The work is one of several projects attempting to identify and develop useful indicators in response to the NRC's maintenance rule and safety efforts. Daily power level has previously been identified as a potential maintenance performance indicator based on its representation, in a broad sense, of the availability and reliability of both balance-of-plant and safety equipment. The specific research described consists of the identification, rational, basis, development, refinement, verification and validation of the indicator developed, and demonstrates how the indicator could be used as a way of monitoring maintenance effectiveness easily and non-intrusively.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":150946,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record for 1992 Fifth Conference on Human Factors and Power Plants","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115359711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors suggest that in addition to training, simulators can be used for design and installation of control systems purposes, for testing operator aids, collecting data for engineering and licensing usage and for various research topics. These applications enhance the usefulness of simulators. However, the economic use of the simulators for these purposes depends on having an automatic data collection and analysis system. The use of the simulator for these purposes can help unite the various departments of a utility such as operations, training, engineering, probabilistic safety assessments (PSA) group, and research in an appreciation of each department's expertise and needs.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":150946,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record for 1992 Fifth Conference on Human Factors and Power Plants","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129824169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
