PALABRAS CLAVE: COVID-19, ferritina, hiperferritinemia, diagnóstico, gravedad.(DeCS) SUMMARY Ferritin is increased by a strong inflammatory reaction caused by SARS-COV 2; Therefore, a narrative review was carried out that aims to determine the association between serum ferritin and severity in patients with COVID-19. A bibliographic search was carried out in the databases Google Scholar, MEDLINE, PubMed, World Wide Science, Kidney International, ScienceDirect and Scielo. It was found that the mean serum ferritin increased from mild to critical cases of COVID-19, being higher in non-survivors. It is concluded that there is a positive relationship between severity due to COVID-19 and elevated levels of serum ferritin, therefore, its determination can select patients who potentially have a greater risk of developing unfavorably and in this way be able to offer a faster treatment and effective","PeriodicalId":150228,"journal":{"name":"Revista Médica de Trujillo","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115038196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pathophysiological mechanisms by which these comorbidities contribute with a worse prognosis in patients with COVID-19 are not yet completely elucidated. Chronic inflammation contributes to immune system dysfunction and a prothrombotic state; furthermore, elevated levels of ECA2, the entry point for SARS-CoV-2, in the metabolic syndrome would be implicated. This review describes the theories that would explain the relationship between metabolic syndrome and COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":150228,"journal":{"name":"Revista Médica de Trujillo","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124689106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Likewise, obese patients are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection due to the gradual loss of functional ASC that impairs ciliogenesis, thus reducing their elimination; also, the altered adipose tissue favors the overexpression of protease receptors that will facilitate their entry. The worsening of the clinical picture of COVID-19 will be triggered as a consequence of the processes of endothelial dysfunction and decreased angiogenesis since, together, they will produce hypoxia, fibrosis and pulmonary functional insufficiency. It is concluded that the dysregulated immune response in obese patients is closely related to morbidity and mortality at the cardio-metabolic level, which leads to a severe clinical picture and in some cases, the death of the infected patient.","PeriodicalId":150228,"journal":{"name":"Revista Médica de Trujillo","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131268222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
