This approach, however, is limited by the possibility of social desirability bias. That is, respondents who are more sophisticated may be more likely to detect the purpose of the measure and adjust their answers, giving socially desirable responses that fail to reveal their antisemitism. To address this measurement issue, we developed a new way to measure antisemitism based on identifying instances in which a double standard has been applied and measuring its magnitude. We then use the new approach to examine antisemitic attitudes in a nationally representative survey of over 1,800 American adults. Our study found evidence contrary to the conventional wisdom that antisemitism is less prevalent among highly educated individuals. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of our new measurement approach and our results, which indicate higher levels of antisemitic attitudes among individuals with more education.","PeriodicalId":148002,"journal":{"name":"Antisemitism Studies","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114345513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Re-Examining French Jewish Responses to the Dreyfus Affair","authors":"Zvi Jonathan Kaplan, Lauren Gottlieb Lockshin","doi":"10.2979/antistud.6.1.02","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2979/antistud.6.1.02","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:Historians of the Dreyfus Affair have long argued over the response of French Jews to the wrongful arrest of their coreligionist, French army captain Alfred Dreyfus, on charges of treason in 1894. While early historiographies focused on Jewish silence and passivity, more recent works have claimed to reveal a Jewish outspokenness. This article attempts to resolve this dissonance by showing that the Jewish response to the Dreyfus Affair is best understood in two phases: an early phase from 1894–1897 and a late phase from 1898–1906. During the early phase, silence prevailed among French Jews who feared confronting a powerful antisemitism driven largely by the Catholic Church. Bernard Lazare, one of the only French Jewish intellectuals to rise in Dreyfus's defense, revealed the role of antisemitism in the Affair during this period by pointing to its religious underpinnings. During the late phase of the Affair beginning in 1898, as more Frenchmen joined the Dreyfusard cause, French Jews were more comfortable being outspoken in defense of Dreyfus and in opposition to antisemitism. This is clearly documented in articles published in the two largest Jewish periodicals in France, the religiously liberal Les Archives Israélites de France and the religiously conservative L'Univers Israélite. Even though anti-clericalism was not the fundamental rationale for Jewish support for Dreyfus, Jews engaged with the clerical/anti-clerical debate at this time, pushing the community in a more anti-clerical direction and strengthening its faith in republican ideals.","PeriodicalId":148002,"journal":{"name":"Antisemitism Studies","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129716915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Public rhetorical attacks against the Jewish people as a whole were less frequent in the West after World War II, but Israel and Zionism became the target of fierce propaganda beginning in the 1970s. In 1975, British MP Christopher Mayhew and former Guardian reporter Michael Adams co-authored a book criticizing Western media coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict titled Publish It Not: The Middle East Cover-Up. A review of the book, published in the Israeli newspaper Maariv the following year, called them out as antisemites. Mayhew and Adams sued the paper and its book reviewer for libel. In the trial, held in Jerusalem, both sides argued over whether their fierce anti-Zionism and harsh criticism of Israel was politically legitimate or antisemitic. In August 1979, District Court Judge Jacob Bazak's verdict absolved Maariv of the charge of libel, characterizing the book review as \"justified and accurate,\" and drew a fine line between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitism. This dispute between opposing high-profile scholars, former generals, and politicians contributed to a wider discussion of antisemitism and has relevance for these same debates today.","PeriodicalId":148002,"journal":{"name":"Antisemitism Studies","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130507613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
