The transducing operation principle is magneto-mechanical and has a linear response. A great improvement of the sensitivity of the microcavities was achieved by the use of a planar coil. Interrogation of the transducer has been carried out using a Fabry-Perot interferometer with an all-fiber detection system to avoid the influence of electromagnetic noise. One of the major practical problems facing the manufacturer of a current sensor rated in the 100 kA range is the cost and complexity of testing the sensors. A number of laboratories around the world have test capabilities at these levels, but the time and expense of testing each sensor to these levels is prohibitive. Fiber-optic current sensors, because they are inherently linear devices, can be effectively calibrated at these high current levels by setting the scaling with much lower currents (say 4 kA) and then using the linearity of the sensor to give an accurate result at high peak currents.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. Calibration of the sensor has shown excellent agreement with conventional semiconductor UV sensors. There are several industrial applications for this type of microwave plasma driven light source especially in the drinking water industry where it is necessary to kill potentially life-threatening bacteria. The results of this investigation have demonstrated the suitability of fibre sensors for monitoring and performance optimisation. of the MPUVL. The technique is especially suited for light source temperature control as the phosphor decay times are less than a second (typically 3 ins). This is particularly important where the wavelength needs to be determined for operation in the germicidal region (254 nm) or the ozone-generating region (185 nm). The results have demonstrated a maximum departure from linearity of 2% in when measuring the light output intensity from the MPUVL in the power operating region (50 to 200 W). For this purpose, an optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor is one of the most promising candidates due to its simple operational principle and the capability to duplicate by WDM technology. For practical use, the temperature characteristics of the center wavelength of an FBG should be eliminated. Various studies based on optical approaches have been conducted for this purpose. However, the resulting systems are complicated and expensive because special FBGs are needed or the number of FBGs is doubled. This report proposes a load cell, which is a force sensor, using a ready-made FBG that can replace a conventional load cell. This device consists of an ordinary FBG for communication and an octagonal frame that has an athermal mechanism. The idea is based on mechanical behavior of the structure on which the FBG is installed, instead of the optical properties of the FBG.
