MAUFI differs from the usual implementation of meta-assemblers in that its user interface is extremely simple to use. The user interface consists of a number of visual forms whose formats vary according to user inputs. A new assembler could be produced simply by a user filling in fields provided in the forms according to the assembly language manual, the tediousness of learning the formalism of a meta-assembly language is avoided.","PeriodicalId":147067,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Small Systems","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125428368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, such machines are useful only if they are interconnected and offer, among other possibilities for interaction, ways of sharing information in a structured way, i.e. if some kind of common database service is available. Such environments, characterized by a loosely coupled user community and by complete physical control of users over their workstation, raise novel problems for the data replication and allocation.\u0000It is important that a database service for interconnected workstations be attractive for its users, because in most cases they decide themselves whether to use it or not. Particular emphasis must therefore be put onto local autonomy and user control over private data.\u0000It is shown in this paper that the concepts well known from symmetrical distributed database Systems have to be revised for this situation. A constructive data replication and allocation method is presented and its consequences for the integrity of data are illustrated.","PeriodicalId":147067,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Small Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131332869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The translator is based on an LL(1) parser generator which has been augmented with error detection and recovery capabilities. These aspects are outlined in the paper. Attributed translation grammars are briefly introduced prior to a discussion of an attributed translation system, ATS, which has been implemented and used on several different computers. Finally, the VATS system, an extended visible translation system, is described. VATS exhibits the detailed internal operation of the attributed translation system. The special capabilities of and future extensions to VATS are also presented.","PeriodicalId":147067,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Small Systems","volume":"4 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127086964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is being implemented with attention to keeping the language simple while at the same time providing a set of programming constructs rich enough for most expert system applications. The Small-X programming environment consists of a language interpreter and an editor that does syntax checking of programs as they are being entered. This paper describes some initial work on the development of an application generation system oriented towards producing customized software for microcomputer-based business applications. To narrow the scope of the task, a model of such application software is proposed and discussed. Such a model focuses the requirements of the application generation system and its function. These requirements, as well as initial work on a prototype, are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":147067,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Small Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125223682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The activity of “porting” software from one environment to another differs from both maintenance and implementation activities and raises a different set of considerations. This paper discusses the porting of the UNIX symbolic debugger (SDB) from the VAX 11/780 to the M68000 based EXORmacs® development system. This was done as part of the first complete AT&T-sanctioned UNIX System V port which was performed by Motorola Microsystems. We first present a brief discussion of the objectives and methods of the UNIX port in which we participated, followed by a short description of the functionality and operation of SDB. We then describe some of the most significant problems as well as our most useful techniques for porting this highly machine-dependent utility. It is argued that there are really two distinct types of software portability problems, namely host dependencies and target dependencies and that the difference between this two is often obscured. We conclude with several recommendations for building more portability into a program such as a symbolic debugger.","PeriodicalId":147067,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Small Systems","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124395321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The structure, along with the operations defined on it, is meant to serve as an internal model of a database system utilizing a semantic conceptual data model. The advantages of the List-based storage structure stem from its ability to: cluster the related data items arbitrarily; represent the entire database, i.e., storage structures, access structures, and schemata, in a uniform way using the same structure; reorganize the storage structures using well-defined operations on the structures; and incorporate basic integrity constraints at the storage structure level. The structure is particularly suitable for environments where the amount of structural information is large relative to the size of the database - a characterization that fits a personal information environment. The definition of the List-based structure, the operations defined for it, and an implementation technique are discussed.","PeriodicalId":147067,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Small Systems","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126879770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tools tend to become more and more sophisticated, but are usually isolated utilities that have to be applied one by one. An alternative to the tool-box approach is an integrated programming environment utilizing powerful interaction facilities.\u0000The design and a prototype implementation of an integrated programming environment is described and the qualities of such a system are discussed. One important design goal was to obtain an environment which has an execution efficiency comparable to that of a system based on a conventional compiler, and a reasonable interaction speed. For this reason the system is based on incremental translation to native code. Another goal was to obtain incremental execution, i.e. the possibility to modify an executing program. The properties of this mechanism and its consequences are investigated.","PeriodicalId":147067,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Small Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130274055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
