VATS —the visible attributed translation system

Abstract

This paper describes a system for generating attributed translators. The translator is based on an LL(1) parser generator which has been augmented with error detection and recovery capabilities. These aspects are outlined in the paper. Attributed translation grammars are briefly introduced prior to a discussion of an attributed translation system, ATS, which has been implemented and used on several different computers. Finally, the VATS system, an extended visible translation system, is described. VATS exhibits the detailed internal operation of the attributed translation system. The special capabilities of and future extensions to VATS are also presented.
