(2001) that explores how individuals respond to the need to share bad news about an IT project. The replication results reinforce the crux of the original findings, which identify that when individuals think that negative information should be reported, they feel a greater responsibility to do so, but only to internal sources. In contrast with the original study, this replication study finds that a greater responsibility to report leads to more (rather than less) reluctance to report to an individual within the chain of command. Further, this study finds that an increased risk perception of a project does not necessarily result in a person being more likely to claim that the project’s status ought to be reported, and perceived wrongdoing does not have a significant impact on responsibility to report. The results imply that whistle-blowing theories may vary greatly with internal versus external sources for reporting, and individuals may be sensitized by several notable company scandals and subsequent legislation to curtail wrongdoing. Further, researchers are encouraged to continue examining other factors impacting one’s need and responsibility to report bad news.","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans. In an effort to address this controversy, Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014) conducted three different experiments to determine whether typing notes on a laptop or handwriting notes in a notebook impacted academic performance. This research replicated the first of these experiments in a classroom environment as opposed to a lab environment. The original study found that students who did not use laptops for note-taking in class performed better on conceptual application questions, while our study found that students who do not use laptops for note-taking in class performed better on factual recall questions instead. Our updated findings suggest there is more work to do to understand the longhand versus laptop debate.","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans. The original work describes a construct labeled 'cognitive absorption' (CA) having a theoretical base derived from three inter-related areas of research: the personality trait dimension of absorption, the state of flow, and the notion of cognitive engagement. Regarding the methodological replication process, we adapted the original instrument to the context of social media and collected data from 326 students. Following the same procedures used by Agarwal & Karahanna (2000), we used Partial Least Squares (PLS) to analyze the data and found results that supported the ideas advanced in their study, although we also identified some differences concerning perceived usefulness, self-efficacy, and personal innovativeness. The differences we found seem to be entirely associated with the context of social media. The level of experience in using technology is likely explained by the fact that the exposure to technology is much more significant today than 16 years ago, technology has become part of the daily routine of individuals, where social media is one of the most widely used.","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans. We test the generalizability of the model by replicating the study a decade later using a different online setting—personal cloud computing. Our results that are based on 240 observations, confirm the original study’s research model except perceived ease of use lost its direct predictive power to trust, perceived risk and perceived usefulness. Trust continues to be an important factor in perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness and should be an area of focus in online marketing strategies. Perceived usefulness continued to have a significant relationship for consumer’s intentions to use, but perceived ease of use did not affect consumer’s intention to use. Thus, more online businesses should focus on the usefulness of their service(s). Future studies are encouraged to methodologically replicate this study in different contexts and after another period in time to examine whether results hold.","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans. We adapt the wording of the original survey items to the context of mobile banking and follow the same procedures to assess the scale. The replication results reinforce the stability and applicability of the scale over the years and in different scenarios. In contrast with the original study, however, we detect a high correlation between the Control and Awareness dimensions, suggesting the design of an additional second-order dimension that we label “exposure management” (individuals’ consciousness about existing controls that mitigate the risks of personal data loss).","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans. The results of the measurement model are valid and reliable, which are consistent and comparable with that of the original study, enhancing the external validity of the constructs proposed in the original model. However, only one of the four hypotheses tested in the structural model was confirmed in the current study although all four were supported in the original study. While the original model was tested on manufacturing firms in the US, the replicated study was carried out in several industries in Ghana, a SSA nation. Thus the differences in the structural model results do not invalidate the original model but suggest the need for capturing contextual or environmental variables such as culture, industry, ethical behavior, and data culture in order to enhance the external validity and theoretical contribution of the original model in the SSA context.","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans. (2014) by utilizing multiple comparison groups of IT leading firms. Empirical testing for the positive association between information technology (IT) capability and firm performance has been a celebrated debate in IS research due to mixed findings; Bharadwaj (2000) and Santhanam and Hartono (2003) confirmed the positive impact of IT capability on firm performance, but Chae et al. (2014) suggested no relationship between the IT capability and performance. Understanding what produces contradictory results is a timely and critical issue because a large body of the business value of IS research has employed IT capability as a key construct. Whereas Chae et al. (2014) investigated the link between IT capability and firm performance by comparing the performance of an IT leader and that of a single matched group from 2001-2004, this study examined the relationship by building multiple comparison groups, which include all firms in the same industry. As a result, contrary to findings by Chae et al. (2014), this research indicated that IT capability has a significant impact on a firm’s financial performance.","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans. For this, the original instrument was adapted, data from 186 social networking website users were collected, and the model was analyzed by means of Partial Least Squares (PLS). The results supported the ideas advanced in the original study and show that addiction distorts user perceptions of usefulness and enjoyment attributed to the system, which in turn, influence behavioral usage intentions. In contrast to study 2 in the original paper, and in line with study 1 in the original paper, no relationship between addiction and perceived ease of use was observed. Comparing central tendencies across studies, it seems that users of social networking websites are more likely to exhibit technology addiction symptoms than users of online auction websites. The results ultimately imply that context matters in technology addiction research since it can alter some aspects of the measurement model, nomological network, and construct means.","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans. (2015) published in Information System Research. In the original study, the authors integrate the privacy and teasing literatures under a social exchange framework to understand online involuntary exposures. The original study was conducted on students from Southeast Asia. Our study uses a significantly larger sample of college students in the United States. Our replication results show that whereas most of the hypotheses supported by the original results on behavioral responses replicate with high consistency (8 out of 12 hypotheses), the results that deal with the effects of network commonality on perceived privacy invasion and perceived relationship bonding did not replicate (4 out of 12 hypotheses). These results could stem from a failed manipulation of network commonality. We look into the possible rationales for this and show what would be an effective manipulation in our context. Further, we expand the original study by testing an additional embarrassing scenario catered to our subject pool. The results suggest that perceived privacy invasion and perceived relationship bonding affect individual’s behavioral responses to embarrassing exposures.","PeriodicalId":146711,"journal":{"name":"AIS Trans.
