One of the requirements for the material to be considered a precursor in the AC production is its high levels of carbon. Therefore, a promising alternative for the use of forest biomass and its residues would be the application of these materials as precursors in the AC production. Owing to the productive capacity of activated carbon in Brazil and the considerable availability of forest biomass, the objective of the study was to approach the production and market of activated carbon in Brazil. This study is a bibliographic review focused on the use of forest resources for the AC production. AC production occurs by three methods: physical, chemical and physico-chemical activation. At the national level, the main production method is the physical one, since it has the least cost. However, the Sector still requires the researches and technologies aimed at the standardisation and improvements in the whole production chain.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"240 - 248"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-08-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46732348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The drive was to explore the possibility of using hemlock as a replacement for expensive hardwoods for flooring applications. Kiln-dried boards at about 12% moisture content were subjected to densification in a hot press. As a special treatment, half of the samples were surface-sprayed with water before densification and three pressing times (5, 10, and 15 min), as well as temperature levels (120°C, 160°C, and 200°C) were used. Sample density, hardness, colour change, and abrasion resistance were evaluated after densification. Data analysis revealed that the temperature level, densification time, and type of pre-treatment were statistically significant factors. Compared to controls, densification significantly improved density, hardness, and abrasion resistance by 197%, 386%, and 437%, respectively. As a possible desired aesthetic feature, this process darkened hemlock by about 200%.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"231 - 239"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20426445.2021.1957616","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46074436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The unique combined properties of biofibres have introduced this new class of biocomposites as a versatile alternative to the present petrochemical composite materials. Considerable efforts are now underway to effectively take advantage of the synergistic effects of combining natural reinforcements and plant-derived polymers for high-performance green composites and nanocomposites. This paper reports the most recent advances in characterization and multifunctional properties of different agro-waste fibres and polymers. The structural properties and functions of the resulting green composites along with their applications are also discussed in details in each section. The current research trends for modification of natural fibres, processing techniques of the given composites as well as their future prospects and challenges are addressed.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"178 - 193"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20426445.2021.1945180","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47098554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was to investigate the effects of heat treatment at 180°C, 200°C, and 220°C on the characteristics of the short rotation teak. The results show that the short rotation teak degraded hemicellulose and increased α-cellulose and lignin after the heat treatment. Anti-swelling efficiency value after heat treatment was improved ranging between 12.9% and 46.7%, indicating an improvement in dimensional stability. The MOE and MOR values decreased after heat treatment. The heat treated sample at 180°C after graveyard test was the lowest in weight loss, which presented good durability against termite (rating 9) and decay (rating 10). The surface roughness and SFE values decreased as the heating temperature increased. The heat treated at 220°C provided the lowest K-values (0.04 for acrylic and 5.04 for alkyd paint) which indicate the poorest wettability.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"218 - 227"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20426445.2021.1953723","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42687954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Bangladesh, China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia plantations of Acacia were established for pulpwood production with people’s participation. This paper reviews the current knowledge of the physical, chemical and morphological characteristics of A. auriculiformis and its pulping potential. The wood density, chemical and morphological properties of A. auriculiformis impacted positively for pulpwood selection in many countries. A. auriculiformis planted in a social forestry programme in Bangladesh and other countries showed almost similar characteristics to A. auriculiformis grown in different parts of the world. It is a promising species for pulping in Bangladesh and other Southeast Asian countries, at the same time poor people can improve their livelihood through participation in social forestry programme by planting this species.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"194 - 205"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20426445.2021.1949107","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59995870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is difficulty in measuring the rotational deformations of timber beams. A stereo camera system and photogrammetric approach are therefore proposed in this study. This study evaluates the applicability of the proposed photogrammetric approach to the torsion testing method on solid timber beams. Tests were performed comparing rotational values of specific points determined by the photogrammetric approach with those measured by traditional devices. Remarkable findings were obtained which may help to develop an outline for future research in the field of evaluating material properties of timber beams. The results also showed that the optical system not only allowed the assessment of performance and reliability of traditional sensors, but also allowed monitoring the deformation of samples at various locations by providing more information which would be unobtainable using traditional techniques.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"206 - 217"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20426445.2021.1952047","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41386439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The samples were subjected to the fungus at 25°C and 75% relative humidity either for 2 or 4 months. Mass, bending strength, elastic modulus, hardness, and equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of both products reduced, while water absorption and thickness swelling increased due to biodegradation. The rates of mass, bending strength, elastic modulus, hardness, and EMC reductions, and water absorption and thickness swelling increases in MDFs were far higher than those of the composites, indicating the lesser susceptibility of the latter samples. Elastic modulus of the composites and hardness of MDFs were more adversely affected under fungal attack, whereas hardness underwent higher rates of reduction in the composites, as compared to the other properties. Scanning electron microscopy was conducted to characterise the alterations in mechanical properties.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"152 - 163"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20426445.2021.1910169","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47685071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wood samples were collected in extractivist communities in Pará state, Brazil. Colour data were obtained randomly on the three anatomical sections, along with reflectance spectra in the range of 360–740 nm. All analyses were carried out with RStudio. In general, reflectance spectra were similar for all species. However, for the Principal Component Analysis results, P. suaveolens stood out. The colorimetric parameters L*, b* and C*, in radial sections, are more important on colour results of the majority of wood samples. Colorimetry spectroscopy showed potential for characterizing some Fabaceae species. Therefore, the technique can serve as a support tool for better identification of this group, contributing to the reduction of ecological and socio-economic damage.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"164 - 171"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20426445.2021.1929763","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46466007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, questions remain regarding how companies can identify and develop innovations via cross-sector collaboration. This study addresses the potential of Oregon forest sector companies to collaborate with other sectors. Results show interest in collaboration among leaders of Oregon companies, given expectations of knowledge acquisition, increased capacity for innovation, and enhanced profitability. However, leaders describe a hesitancy within their companies as well as a host of changes that must take place before collaboration is likely. Suggestions include generational changes of leadership, more specialized employees, and building trust with potential partners. A traditional, conservative industry/company culture was the key barrier to collaboration. Despite opportunities promised by cross-sector collaboration, considerable development within companies is likely needed before cross-sector collaboration opportunities can be capitalized on.","PeriodicalId":14414,"journal":{"name":"International Wood Products Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"135 - 143"},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/20426445.2021.1889164","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48181744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
